Description

. To all whom't't mayeoneem:
` EDWARD s. ELLIS, QE '.rRENToN, NEW JERSEY.
IM PROVEM ENT IN E'NVELOPES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 112,568, dated March 14, 1871.
Be it known` that I, EDWARD S. ELLIs, of Trenton, inthe county of Mercer and State of New` Jersey, `have invented a new and usefnl Improvement in ALetter-Envelopes; and
I do hereby declare that the following is a Vfull, clear, `and exact description thereof,
which'will enable others skilled in the art to make anduse the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this l specification.
This invention relates to improvements in envelopes for inclosin g letters 5 and it consists in an arrangementcalculated to facilitate the opening of the saine, also to retain the letter after being opened and the inelosure replaced in it, all as -hereinafter described.
Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved eni velope when open, previous to inclosing the letter, and Fig."2 is a plan of the same when "the letter is inclosed and the envelope sealed.
Similar letters of reference indicate correl spondin g parts.
Insteadof making the `lapel A in the usual form, I cut out a notch, represented by the lines a. and b, and I make perforations c along the junction of it with the back of theenvelope to facilitate tearing open, and to -cover the part cut out I provide the long lapel B on the back, and as Wide as the notch in A, Which is to be folded under A and D in sealing, as indicated by the dotted lines. readily inserting the thumb or linger between A and B, which are not sealed together, at the angle betweenthelines a and d, when, by a jerk of the finger downward along the perforations c, the part A will be readily sepayrated from the back, and the inclosure may be drawn out, the lapel B being rst withdrawn from under A and D. Then, by replacing the letter in the envelope and folding lapel A back under A and D, it will be retained securely in the envelope.
Having thus described my invention, I
claim asnew and desire to secure by Letters- Patent- A The improved letter-envelope having the lapel Anotched and perforated, as shown, and provided Witlilthev lapel B, all substantially as specified. f
EDWARD S. ELLIS. Witnesses: Y
