Z 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANCIS MORTON CLARK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Garden City, in the county of Nassau and State of New York, have in vented a certain new and useful Improvement in Grates for Mechanical Stoker's, of whichthe following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to improvements in grates for mechanical stokers of the endless traveling grate type, in which the grate is mounted on endless conveyer chains carried on sprocket wheels mounted in the fore and rear parts of the furnace.
The objects of my invention are to provide a grate composed of sections which shall be. easily and conveniently attachable to and detachable from the conveyer chains and which sections, being exactly alike, shall be reversible and interchangeable; to provide a grate which may be extended to any desired breadth by the addition of further chains and sections or by substituting sections of different length, and which shall be economical to construct and operate; and to obtain such other advantages and results as may be brought out in the following description and claims.
I attain these objects by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side view of a portion of a grate bar showing one grate bar section and a portion of another, and the manner of joining the sections together and the bar to the chains; Fig. 2 is a plan view showing a portion of two grate bars at the junction between the grate bar sections; Fig. 3 is a perspective of the end of the grate bar section shown in Fig. 1, but with the chain and connecting pin omitted; Fig. i is a plan of the ends of the grate bar sections shown in Fig. 2; Fig. 5 is an end elevation, on an enlarged scale, of a grate bar section, showing a few links of the conveyer chain and the manner of attaching the sections thereto;
Fig. 6 is an enlarged end view in perspective of a pin used in attaching the grate bars to the chains; and Fig. 7 is an enlarged perspective of a pin employed to give stiffness to the grate bars.

Each is formed with a web 7 and, in the form chosen for purposes of illustration, with staggered, intermeshing teeth 8, so as to be self-cleaning. Each grate bar section is provided adjacent each end with a full lug 10 and at each end with a half-lug 9; two of which half-lugs when placed -in juxtaposition, as shown in Fig. 1, fit closely together and form a member of the same size and shape as lug 10. The halitlugs 9 and lugs 10 project below the web 7 a suihcient distance to pass through a horizontal link Y of the chain KY, and to extend below said link a sutlicient distance to receive a locking pin 11, which fits in openings 12 in said lugs and is held in position by any suitable means, as for instance, cotter pins 13. v
The half-lugs 9 and lugs 10 are provided with shoulders let extending over the vertical links X and curved in conformity therewith. in a grate bar with intermeshing teeth, such as I have chosen for illustration, the lugs 9 and 10 should be out off at 15, as clearly shown in the drawings, in order to give clearance for and air space around the teeth on adjacent grate bars; but in bars of the abutting teeth type, the lugs 9 and 10' may be formed as continuations ofthe teeth if desired.
In the drawings I have indicated the right hand bar section and a portion of one of the intermediate sections, of which it will be readily understood as many as desired to give the proper width of grate, may be employed. If, as shown in Figs. 1, i and 5 the chain KY is an outside one and the section therefore an end one, the grate 1211' section is placed with the lug 10 entering the hori zontal link Y, upon which link the web 7 of the grate bar section rests and is supported. The vertical links X fit under the shoulder 1t and by contact therewith prevent the grate bar from rocking. One of the pins 11, the heads 16 of which are flattened at 17, is passed through the opening 12 of the lug 10 and holds the link Y snugly against the web 7. Cotter pin 13 is employed to hold the pin 11 in place.
If, as shown at the left hand side of Fig. 1 the chain XY is an intermediate one, it is joined to two grate bar sections at the r juncture. The link Y receives two halfdugs 9, one on each abutting section, and the pin 11 passes through both half-lugs 9, thus joining the grate bar to the chain and the two grate bar sections to one another. Each end of each grate bar section has a recess 18 found in its end and, when sections are joined end to end, pins 19 are inserted in said recesses to give stiffness to the joint.
In the specification and claims I have referred to the element 9 as a half-lug and to the element 10 as a full lug. These expressions have been employed because no more descriptive ones could be found. By the term half-lug I intend to specify a projection, extending from the grate bar body, which is shaped, located, and adapted to cooperate with another similar projection on an adjacent grate bar section-the two together forming a body of substantially the size and shape of the full lug -10 and adapted to enter a link of the chain KY and be attached thereto in the same manner as a lug 10. When the section is to be used as an end one the half-lug 9 is not used and, in fact, it is not of a size and shape to adapt it to use alone but it must be supplemented by what may be termed its auxiliary on another section before it can perform its proper function. The term full lug is employed to designate a projection, extending from the grate bar body, which is adapt- 7 ed when used alone to perform its functions, as opposed to the half-lugs which must have their coiiperating counterparts employed therewith. The claims should be construed in view of the limitations given the terms half-lug and full lug in this paragraph.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is V 1. A grate bar section having a clownwardly projecting half-lug at each end of said section and a downwardly projecting full lug adjacent each end of said section, the arrangement of said lugs being such that each end of said section is adapted for connection to a carrier member alone, or for interchangeable connection to a carrier member and another section of the same description.
2. A grate bar section having a half-lug at each end of said section and a full lug adjacent each end of said section, each of said lugs having a bolt hole therein in a direction longitudinal of the grate bar section, the arrangement of said lugs being such that each end of said section is adapted for connection to a carrier member alone, or for interchangeable connection to a carrier member and another section of the same description. i
3. In an endless traveling grate, a plurality of conveyer chains having grate bars mounted transversely thereon, each grate bar being composed of a plurality of grate bar sections joined end to end, each grate bar section having at each end a half-lug provided with shoulders shaped to conform to the vertical links of the chains, the halflugs at the ends of abutting sections being adapted to cooperate and, by entering the same link on a chain, to form a means of attaching the abutting sections together and of joining the grate bar to a chain.

In an endless traveling grate, a plurality of conveyer chains having grate bars mounted transversely thereon, each grate bar being composed of a plurality of grate bar sections joined end to end, each grate bar section having at each end a half-lug and adjacent each end a full lug, and a shoulder on each of said lugs shaped to conform to the vertical links of the chains, the full lugs on the outer ends of the outer sections beingadapted to enter links on the outer chains and the half-lugs at the ends of abutting sections being adapted to enter the same link on an intermediate chain, whereby each grate bar section is adapted to be used either as an end or an intermediate section.
5. In an endless traveling grate, a plurality of conveyer chains with grate bars mounted transversely thereon, each grate bar being composed of a plurality of grate bar sections joined end to end, each grate bar section having at each end a half-lug and adjacent each end a full lug, whereby each grate bar section is adapted to be used either as an end or an intermediate section, the chains and bar sections being so relatively located that the side chains receive the full lugs adjacent the ends of the grate bars and that the intermediate chains receive into the same horizontal link the two half-lugs at the juncture between two grate bar sections, and pins passing through the lugs below the chains for attaching the grate bars to the chains and the grate bar sections to one another.
6. In a grate for mechanical stokers, a plurality of conveyer chains, a plurality of grate bars mounted transversely thereon, each grate bar being composed of a plurality of grate bar sections joined end to end and provided where the sections abut with coiiperating duplicate lugs having shoulders thereon, one of said lugs being on each abutting section, the pairs of duplicate lugs being adapted to enter the same horizontal link on a conveyer chain and the shoulders on each pair of lugs coiiperating with the vertical links of the chains to maintain the grate bars in position.
7.
