Y., A COBPORATlON OF ILLLINIB.
TESTING APPARATUS.
Speccaton of Letters Patent.
iwal-.rented J Application filed December 12, 1913. Serial lilo. 80E-,2%.
To all whom t may concern:
Beit known that LICLARENC NOEL CAA- rrUsAc, a subject of the King of England, residing at 224 West Twenty-second street, in the city, county, have invented a certain new and usefullm provement in Testing Apparatus, of which the following 1s a full, clear, concise, and exact description.
This invention relates to fault locating sets for repairmen, and more particularly to an apparatus box for such sets:
The object of this invention is to provide a.' portable container` and mounting means for the various apparatus comprising the set, which is compact and in which all of the various pieces of apparatus desirable for making necessary tests of a cable or transmission line may be conveniently mounted in a manner to be readily accessible 'for making connections, replacements and re pairs and will be rendered harmless to the user and otherwise Well protected against accidents.
In accordance With this invention, there 'is provided a receptacle divided into a plu rality of compartments Within which are located various of the devices necessary for makinofall tests required of a repairman.
One of the features of this invention consists -in the provision of a mounting means for the apparatus,- whereby tapparatus. such as high tension inductive ,devices which might prove dangerous to sis' the user and circuit interrupters which might be of delicate adjustment, are vvell protected While in use or being transported.
Other features of the invention are the means for facilitating wiring, repairs and replacements, and consists in mounting all of the apparatus which is connected with permanent wiring upon a single support vhich is removable from the container and has a hinged portion attached thereto which carries a portion of the apparatus.
In the drawings- Figure 1 is a perspective vieiv of a test set embodying the fea tures of this invention; Fig..2 is a view of the apparatus anda support therefor; Fig. 3 is a vievv in side elevation of the parts of Fig. 9.; and Fig. 4 is a diagram of the apparatus and connection of a set embodying this invention., i
As shown in the drawings, '5 designates a container ogconvenient term having a and State of New York,l
parts of the hinged cover l and 'a shoulder strap 7 by means ot which it may be transported.
In order 'to facilitate the various tests to be made upon a cable, there Aare provided various pieces of apparatus Wired together vand having certainterminals of the Wiring connected with binding posts and switches 1n order that any of the various combinations of the apparatus for the dilerent tests may be readily obtained.
As a supporting means for this apparatus there is provided a l"shaped member hav lng a vertical portion or leg l0 and horizontal portions or arms 11 and 25.
Mounted upon the leg l0 are a plurality of eondensers 15, l5, a high tension electro magnetic vibrator i6 and a circuit interrupter 17 which is .preferably a magnetically operated device.
Mounted upon the upper face of the horizontal portion or arm 11, are a three-Way 'switch 1S, a plurality of binding posts 19, 20 and" 2l, a vibratingmeiiber- Q2 and ad; justing screws Q3 and 24 of the high tension electromagnetic vibrator 16. Mounted upon the arm or horizontal portion 25 is an electromagnetic buzzer 26 and a plurality of binding posts 27, 28, 29, 30, 31 and 32. The horizontal portion or arm 9.5 is preferably hinged to the edge of the horizontal -member ll for convenience in removing the apparatus and making connections.
All of the pieces of apparatushereinbetore enumerated, mounted upon the supporting members 10, 11 and 25, are connected to' gether through permanent Wiring in the form of cables 35 and 3G, a portion 37 of cable 35 being run through an opening in said leg l0 and connected with the parts carried upon the hinged portion Q5. This portion 37 of the cable 35 extends along the under portion of the member 25 and being liexible will not interfere with the swinging movement of said member 9.5.
The margins of the vertical supporting member l0 extend slightly beyond the ed ges of the members l1 and 25 and are adapted to slide in grooves 38, 38 in the opposite sides of the container 5 near one end thereof. W'hen in this position in the container, the member ll is flush with the top of the container 5 and covers the space between the grooves 38, 38 and the a cent end of the container. The hinged Vmember '25 when in vIl() Copies of this patent mnv be obtained for its horizontal position with the supporting means in the container 5 is also tlush with the upper portion of the said container and forms a cover for batteries 45, 45 which may be carried in the container. A partition 46 beyond the batteries 45, 45 provides a third compartment in the container in which may be carried telephone instruments and other devices such as cable exploring coils which may be required in making tests. Terminals 4T, 4T connected with conductors included in the cable 35 are adapted for connection with the batteries 45, 45.
Asshown in Fig. 4, the high tension Vibrator 16 is provided with an energizing or primary winding 40 and two secondary windings 41 and 42, the terminals of which are brought out at the binding posts 19, 20 and 21, connections to the binding posts 19 and 20 being for a low voltage, while connection to the binding - posts 19 and 21 will be for a high voltage. The primary or energizing winding 40 of the vibrator 16 is in circuit with a'source of energy 45 and the three-way switch 18. lVith the three-way switch in its first position circuit will be closed through the high tension vibrator 16 only. IVith the three-way switch in its second or intermediate position, a. circuit is completed through both the high ten sion vibrator 16 and the electromagnetic interrupter 17,4 whereby impulses from the vibrator 16 are sent out intermittently. vlien the three-way switch is in its third position, the high tension vibrator is cut out and the' buzzer 26 'is connected in circuit with the battery.- The terminals 27, 28, V29, 30, 31 and 32 are used for making outside connections with the buzzer 26, with the battery, with battery and a condenser, or for obtaining various othervcombinations ot' the apparatus as may be desired.
By providing a. removable support upon which the various pieces of apparatus are mounted, all of these pieces are readily accessible for connections, replacements and repairs and at the same time are. well protected from injuries. Moreover, with such an arrangement, all of the parts necessary may be connected with permanent wiring which is confined tothe removable support. thereby producing a complete unit with all ofthe parts conveniently located and readily accessible.

3.In a portable testing set, a container, an apparatus support removably mounted in said container, said support comprising a vertical member fitting within said container, a rigid horizontal member fitting into a portion of said container, a hinged portion fitting into a portion of said con tainer, and apparatus mounted upon 'said vertical portion, said horizontal portion and said hinged portion.
4. In a. portable testing set, a container having grooves in its side walls, a removable apparatus support-having a vertical member adapted to fit into said grooves, a horizontal member and a hinged member extending over a portion of said container and forming a closure therefor, and apparatus mounted upon said supporting members.
5. In a portable testing set, a container, a relnovable apparatus support comprising a vertical member, a horizontal member and hinged member, -apparatus mounted upon said supporting members, and connecting means for said apparatus carried by said support.
6. In a portable testing set, a container, a removable apparatus supportfin said `container comprising a vertical member, a horizontal member and a hinged member, apparatus mounted upon said supporting members, aud a flexible cable carrying conductors connecting the various pieces of apparatus carried by the supporting members.
