ABRAHAM NQZELL, or LANoAs'rER, PENNSYLVANIA.
l l Letters Patent No. 112,521, dated March 7,1871.
L MPROVEMENT IN TOBACCO-PRESSES-A A i TheSchedul referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
I, ABRAHAM N. ZELThAof the city of Lancaster, in i the State of Pennsylvania-,have invented certain Improveniente on an ordinary Tobacco-Press, of whichV A thc following is aspeciiication. 4
p The object of my inventiouis to improve the common, cheap, and universally-used tobacco-press in this sectionand elsewhere, so as to prevent the wear on the ordinary sawetoothed rack and wedge-pointed lever when ymade as heretofore, whichboth speedily become wornsmooth and rounded, so that the least lateral motion, under heavy pressure, is so apt to spring the A end of the' lever, to one side, and with such force, as, in many instances,to.cause serions injur7 to the operatives. 1 .A i A The drawing'illustrates the old and my improvement, in which-- i A Figure V`1-is a` vertical section, showing the truck,
i box, levers, 8m.
Eigure 2a perspective view of my improved lever.
Figure 3, of the improved rack.- A
Figure 4 shows the Told" wedge-toothed lever end or shoe `and the saw-toothed rack, as incommon use.
The hold and fnlcrum-links are also shown sepa-v i rately, asfusedin both cases.
This 4simple improvement is readily comprehended, and a brief description will` enable any one skilled in .A the art to make and use the same.
A Friction-'rollerso,Abehind the racks Bf in` the mor- 1 tices `of the `cross-beam A, through which the racks pass, would also add greatly Ato the machine to lessen friction. j .l .i The vnovelty consists in the construction of the racknotches and end of the lever. These notches hare a circular recess and rounded hook-likefteeth, as shown in the racks R, gs. 1 and 3. Y
The side irons D ofthe. ylever E are brought closer together, lso as to receive the rack between them.
A stout iron pin, d, unites the side irons. This pin lls the'circular recess in the notch of the rack, and,
by the sides of .the lever thus embracing the sides `of the4 rack, and thepoint of contact adapted to each other, all' tendency to a lateral motion or chance of slipping is prevented, much valuable time thereby saved, and all danger obviated; combining all these serious considerations, besides the durability and ease in the operation.
The rack R .is hinged at H, secured to the 'bed B of a truck, onwhich thebox to be iilled is placed. The top cross-beam A, with the blocking O and links K L, are the'sarne as heretofore in use.
What I deem new, as an improvement on this kind A of tobacco-press, isthe application of the lever and rack, as shown and specified. Therefore,
What I claim is- In the press herein described the arrangementof the hinged rack-bar It, links K and L, lever E, with pin d, notch F, and platens A and B, when all con# structed and operating as shown and described, for the purpose set forth.
