formed bunches which are made and molded and then fed to the machine for the purpose of applying the wrappers.
The machine comprises a bunch carrier equipped with rollers between which the hunch is held, the rollers being rotated to wind the wrappers on the bunch. The carrier has a reciprocating motion, the wrapper being applied as the carrier advances. The rollers are mounted in a pivoted frame so that they turn at an angle to the line of reciprocation in order to accommodate the wrapper to the tapering shape of the bunch. The former also has a lateral motion, with respect to the line of reciprocation, in order to roll the wrapper from one end of the bunch to the other, in the usual spiral course. There is thus a triple movement imparted to the bunch as it rotates; first an'advancing motion; second, a turning motion; and third, a lateral motion. Associated with the mechanism to produce this motion is a wrapper holder or carrier and cutter, of the pneumatic type, comprising a suction plate on which the wrapper is laid and held. This plate reciprocates under the bunch carrier and it is provided with a cutting edge having the outline of the wrapper to be applied to the bunch, and as the respective carriers reciprocate the wrapper is cut by means of a pair of rollers which travel with the bunch carrier over said plate, and bear upon the cutting edge to out out the wrapper, which is then picked up by the bunch and rolled around the same. vice which acts to lift the starting end of the wrapper and apply it to the bunch, so that it will be caught by the rollers which rotate the bunch and then drawn off the plate as the winding progresses.- A cutter is also associated with the wra per carrier, for the purpose of cutting off the ends of the cheroot, the present machine being particularly adaptedfor the production of cheroots as distinguished from cigars which are headed or tipped and pasted.
The machine is illustrated in the acco1n= panying drawings in which- Figure. 1 is a top plan view in one position, designated as the starting position.- Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same; Fig. 3 is a top plan view with thee-arrier partly advanced. Fig. 4 is a side elevation the position shown in Fig. 3 Fig.- 5' is a detail of the wrapping rolls and the tucker. Fig.- 6 is an end view of the same. Fig.- 7 is a detail in section of the rolls between which the bunch is 1161a, Fig. 8 is a detail in elevation showing the means for releasing the bunch after it is wrapped. Fig. 9 is a plan or diagram illustrating the different positions of the bunch as it travels over the suction bed. Fig. 10 is a detail of the tucker operating device.
Referring specifically to the drawings, 10 indicates a frame of suitable construction to support the parts hereinafter referred to, this frame having arms 11 at one" end which support a slideway' 12 on which the air box or bed 13 re'ciprocates.
The power shaft is indicated at 14 and by spur gears 15-,- 16 and 18 drives a cam shaft 19 carrying cams 20 and 21. In suitable guides in top of the frame 10 slides a carrier plate 22, this plate being re'cip'r'd cated by a lever 23 having a roller 24 which travels in the groove of the cam plate 21 and is connected by a link 25 to the underside of the carrier plate 22. At its" forward end this plate has a pair of brackets 26 which support cross slideways 17, onwhich is mounted a cross head to which carries a pivoted yoke 27, the pivot 28 of which has at its upper end a crank 29 provided with a pin 30* which travels in a cam groove 31 in a transverse bar 32 fixed to the brackets 26. A lever 33 is. fulcrumed at 3 1 on the slide 22, and at one end has a slot 35 which receives a pin 36 depending from the yoke 27 at the pivotal v axis thereof. The other end of the lever carries a pin 37 which travels in a cam groove 38 in a top plate 39 mounted on pillars 11 on the main frame.
The yoke 27 carries the corrugated wrapping rolls which support the bunch during the wrapping operation. These rolls are three in number, a top roll 12, and two lower side rolls 4-3, which are mounted on suitable shafts extending across between the arms of the yoke. These rolls are driven as follows: The power shaft 1 1, through beveled gear &1, drives an upright shaft 15 at the upper end of which is a bevel gear 46 meshing with a bevel gear 47 which drives a splined shaft 18 which is slidable through the gear 47, the shaft 48 being carried in bearings 19 on the underside of the reciprocating plate 22. The front end of the shaft 48 is connected by a flexible shaft section 50 to a worm 51 mounted on one of the arms of the yoke 27 and the worm drives a gear 52 which drives a gear 53 on the shaft of the upper roller 12 which at its other end has a gear 51 which by intermediate gears 55 drives the gears 56 on the shafts of the lower rollers 41-3. The shafts of said lower rollers are hung by swinging links 57 and 58 from the branches of the yoke 27, and one of the links 58 has an extending arm 59, and the two links 58 have meshing segment gears 60, so that when the arm 59 is swung one way or the other the links are swung and the lower rollers are opened or closed accordingly, to release or hold the bunch. Stops 61 limit the swing of the links, and the arm 59 is operated by striking suitable tappets 62 on the main frame, the spring 63 acting on the arm 59 to throw the same to the full extent one way or the other after the tappets carry the arm beyond center.
The air box 13 has thereon a cutting edge or outline 6 1 with suitable suction holes 65 along the same and the wrapper leaf is laid thereon and is cut in the corresponding out line by means of rollers 66 and 67 which are carried by arms 68 projecting from a slide 69 which reciprocates 011 the guide 12, the rollers traveling in contact effected by springs 70 over the outline edge 6 1. The slide 69 is connected by a link 71 to the reciprocating plate 22, so that the rollers reciprocate with the plate. The suction to the air box is produced through a hose 72 and pipes 7 3 controlled by a valve 74 the stem 75 of-which is connected to a trip lever 7 6 which is operated by a tappet 77 to throw the exhaust on or off according to the position of the wrapper carrier, the suction be ing released during the wrapping operation in order that the bunch may pick up the wrapper as it travels over the same.
The air box is reciprocated by the cam 20, by means of a lever 78 having a roller 79 which travels in the groove of said cam and is connected to the slide 81 which carries the air box, the construction of the cams being such that the direction of movement of the bunch carrier and the wrapper carrier is opposite at each stroke. loosely mounted on the guide 12 and it has legs 82 with rollers 88 which travel on a rail 8% supported by brackets 85, said rail hav ing a slight dip 86 to drop the air box slightly as it comes under the bunch, which assists in permitting the bunch to strip or peel the wrapper from the air box as it travels thereover. The slide 81 also carries a pair of cutters 87 which at the end of the outward stroke cooperate with a pair of cutters 88 mounted on the guide 12 and act to shear or cut off both ends of the cheroot. The cutters 87 carry fingers 89, pivoted 90 and having depending ends with pins 91 which are struck by the pair of cutters 88 and swung to drop the cheroot after the ends are severed, as indicated in 2. Springs 92 act to return the fingers 89 to position, as shown in Fig. 4, and the tappet 62 is so located that it will open the rollers 43 and allow the cheroot to drop therefrom into the fingers 89 at the limit of the forward movement of the bunch carrier, after the wrapping has been effected.
The tucking device shown in detail in Figs. 5 and 6, comprises a spring finger 97 mounted on the inner end of a shaft 98 which has a conical friction block 99 adapted to engage in a conical recess 100 in the gear 52, said shaft 98 being carried by arm 101 fulcrumed at 102 on a bracket on the yoke 27, the upper end of said. arm being provided with a roller 200 which travels on a cam 104: carried by the plate 39. A spring 106 tends to depress the inner end of the lever and a stop 107 limits the movement, when the carrier 13 travels inwardly and its notch 108 comes in line with the tucking needle the plate 22 moves forwardl},
and the roller 200 begins to travel up the L incline of the cam 10% and swings the lever 101 to bring the block 99 into the friction recess 100, which gives the shaft 98 the retary movement of the gear 52, and the 97 picks up the end ofthe leaf and lifts the same to contact with the bunch held between the rollers 42 and 13, tucking the end of the leaf between the bunch and one of the rollers 4:3 and thereby starting the wrapping operation and the carrier 18 follows the movement of the carriage 22 until the wrapper is caught by the bunch when the carrier 13 stops and the bunch carrier advances thereover to complete the wrapping operation,
the roller 200 meanwhile running off the rise of the cam 10% and permitting the spring 106 to withdraw the tucking finger 97 from the wrapper. The air box or carrier 13 is recessed as indicated at 108, near one of its inner corners, so that the finger 97 may be The slide 81 is swung in and the finger 97 enter said recess under the wrapper to lift the same as described above.
The general operation will be briefly stated as follows: At the starting position shown in Fig. 1, the prepared bunch is inserted between the rollers 43, into the space between said rollers and the roller 42. At the same time the leaf from which the wrapper is to be cut is placed on the bed of the air box 13, where it is held by suction. The cam then acts to slide the air box 13 inwardly and when the front end of the air box reaches the bunch the finger 97 lifts the front end of the wrapper and tucks the same between the bunch and one of the rollers 4C3, which then begins to traverse the air box and pick up the wrapper and the rollers wind the same on the bunch which is held between the rollers and slightly above the air box. The slide 22 continues to travel outwardly, and during this movement the travel of the pin 37 in the cam groove 38 shifts the slide 40 laterally, thus carrying the bunch sidewise over the wrapper to give a spiral wind, and at the same time the travel of the pin 30 in the cam groove 31 turns the yoke 27 on its pivot to increase the inclination of the bunch with respect to the line of tr vel, to accord with the greater diameter of the bunch at the middle, and the shape of the cam groove 31 is such that as the bunch then approaches the limit of outward movement the yoke is swung back according to the smaller diameter of the cheroot near the other end thereof, the bunch during this movement peeling or picking up the wrapper from the air box. Finally the rollers 4-3 are opened and the cheroot drops between the cutters 87 and the fingers 89. The bunch carrier then travels inwardly to original position, and the air box slides outwardly to original position carrying with it the cheroot to contact with the cutters 88 which in conjunction with the cutters 87 cut off the ends, and the fingers 89 tilt, as shown in Fig. 2. and the finished cheroot is dropped. The machineisthen ready for the next operation. Obviously the shape of the cam grooves 38 and 31 must be changed according to the shape of the cheroot to be produced, and it may be remarked that different machines must be used for what are known as right hand and left hand wrappers, since each wrapper leaf is divisible into two parts, which must be wrapped differently.
It will be noticed that a pair of rollers 66 and 67 are used, to pass over the cutting edge of the air box, one of said rollers being located in advance of the other, and offset therefrom to cooperate with different parts of said edge. This is better than a single roller, which by its strain across one line has a tendency to tear the wrapper at some point, during the movement of the roller therefrom. The two offset rollers acting on different parts of the wrapper correct this defect.
