REAR INDICATOR FOR VEHICLES.
Application flled November 24, 1913.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE A. LAUBER- sr-IeIMnR, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Rear Indicators for Vehicles, of which the following is a specification.
The main object of my invention is to pro 1 vidc an automobile. or other vehicle with mechanism that can be quickly set to indicate to a vehicle following the direction that the leading vehicle will take at a street or other crossing.
In the drawings forming a part of this application v Figure 1 is a face view or view shown to a following vehicle of the indicating portion of the mechanism with parts of the operat- 29 ing mechanism shown in full and in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a diagrammatic view.

In the drawings 5 is a box or case in which is pivotally mounted, in bearings 6, a semaphore arm or bar 7 which projects through a slot 8 in the top of the case.
Mounted on the top of bar 7 is an incandescent electric lamp 12 which is connected by wiring 13 with the lighting system of the machine.
Mounted within box 5 preferably at each end thereof are magnets 14 and 15 which are preferably solenoidmagnets having ,a common plunger 16 which passes through bearin s 17 and 18 secured to the box.
Coiled around plunger 16 between bar 7 and bearing 17 is a spring 20 and' a second springs 21 is coiled around the plunger between bar 7 and bearing 18. These springs normally hold bar 7 in a vertical position.
Secured to the top of box 5 is a vertical plate 22 which is provided with a central aperture 23 in which'is mounted a transparent colored plate 24 which is in line with 65 lamp 12 when the machine is traveling along the street not near a crossing. Plate 24' is Specification of Letters Patent.

With the parts herein described suitably mounted in and on the automobile should the driver desire to turn tothe right at a corner he closes switch 28 just before he gets to the turning point thereby energizing mag net 14 which draws the top of bar 7 to the right thus indicating that the vehicle will turn to the right at the next corner. After turning the corner he opensthe switch and spring 20 returns bar 7 to its normal position. If he desires to turn to the left he closes switch 29 which draws the top of bar 7 to the left thus indicating that the vehicle will turn to the left at the next corner. After turning the corner he opens. the switch and spring 21 returns bar 7 to its normal position. By using lamp 12 as a tail light as well as a signal light for turning, the attention of the driver of the following vehicle is instantly attracted to the leading vehicle when the driver indicates his intention to turn, because first the red tail light disappears and at one or the other side of the accustomed place for the ta'fi-light appears a clear light. which indicates that the leading machine will turn tothe right or left at the next corner. If desired plate 22 could be omitted but in such case the device with the semaphore arm, said aperture being on a horizontal line with the lamp; a transparent colored closure for said aperture; two magnets operatively connected to the semaphore arm whereby the top thereof 13 moved {so the right or left of fishe vertieel' llne Whenever one or ihe other ef salt]. megnets 1s energlzedg and-means to energize one or'the other of said. magnets when desired.
