Description
`JAMES M. SEYMOUR, or NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
d Letters PatentNo. 112,502, dated March 7,1871.
iMPRovEMENT InyDovrai-Anita@-MACEIsuis.` f
` I, JAMES M. SEYMOUR, of the city of N ewark, in
the county of Essex` and. State of New Jersey, have invented `certain YImprovements in. Dovetailing-Maehnes, of whichlthe following ,is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying'drawing and letters of reference thereon, in whichv y Figure-1 is a'perspectiveview of the i'nachine,
and l Figure 2is a section of'` tableand cutters.` My improvement relates- ,i First, lto a wayof-,inclining and varying of inclinings with Inechanicalprecision and4 facility those parts of tables on which are placed and heldthe piece to be dovetailed; N l y Second, to completingadovetail without havingto `changefthe position off the `piece `on the table 'g and iThird, to constructing, arranging, and adapting ,saws or cutters for `the l production ot dovetails upon y l `piecesiglaidon tippingtables.
`Iii the accompanying drawing` A is the main framelof the machine.
B islaslidingfiaine `or table.
. RIO is anintegral` part of B, and is a tipping or re-v p, versihle inclining table'with its center of mot-ion at D.
l, UponGfisgthe `adjustablefstop or fence E;
` F is a set-screw attachedtotlie `sliding frame B.
Gr is also' a variable incline, with its center of ino-4 Ii are the guidesfor the slide B. l
i' Jisaform for varying the incline of G. Kis a form for varyiugthe incline of ,0.
j L isa` detachable form for reversing the incline of `Q as may be needed 1. l
1 `M1 M? are cutters or saws having perpendicular' shaftsin'adjustable boxes; and
Nlmisth'e driving-pulley. The piece to be operated `upon `is laid upon the rcy versible or"tipping `table Cpand is held, by the hand ofthe operator, close to the stop or fence E, and, to gether with the slide, is` pushed from the operator past the horizontalcutter M1. l
` It will beseen, uponjret'erence tothe drawing, where' anopening is made through the traine to show it, that thereis :a guide or bearing attached tothe under side l of the front edge ot' the tipping table C restingnpon the form K, which lifts up `the edge oi' the table when it cornes tothe incline on the. detachable forni L, or depresses it by the opposite. inclinev K when the detach-able forni L is removed, the guide or bearing be-vv V ing kept down on `the forms bytheforward force from the hand ofthe operator holdingthe piece' to the stop orfence, pushing` the `table from hiin'v` on the sliding Atthe. bach "edge of 'thertipplng table C is a set- The seheauie referred to-in these Letters patent and making paru of mesme,
screw, to determine the degree of reversed incline when the bearing ou thefront edge oi' G is deseendir'g the table C does itin-one direction, and the movable forni L, when in place, does it inthe other. 'The'horizontalcutters on upright adjustable shafts are formed by a series oi'crcnlar plates with cuttingedges, more or less of which are used, as more or less wood has to be out away. Any needed length ot' shaft, with cutters at distances required for dovetails in the end of a board, can' be used in the machine. It being desirable to out both inclines of a dovetail during one motion forward from the operator of the piece upon the table without changing the position ot' the piece lying against the stop or fence, there are two cutters, one for each incline. The top of the one and the bottom of the other are placed atthe needed distance for the size of the dovetail, and the forms used change the incline with -the stud` to be dovetailed, while theslide is-carrying the piece from ope saw or cutter to the other and while the stul is between the said cutters. g L
. The varying incline G is intended to d o forthe resame shafts.
In fig. 2, at P, the end ofa rail is shown with a pin cut thereon, the line of its under side having been out by the saw or cutter M? while the table had the incline, as shown, the upper line having been cut by the saw or cutter Ml with the table tipped theothe r way.
To have uniform` dovetails it is all important that iu changes of incline-.the middle of the thickness ot' the railv should, in both ineliuings, be exactly at thesanie height from and' parallel with the faee'ot the slidingl tableaB. It matters not the distance cna line of radiation from the center, the rail may he placed, so long as the rail rests eqnidistant from aline that is perpendicular to 'the-center and att-he same parallel on either side, in being tipped. 1t is,.theretbre, indispensable that the fence or stop should place and keep the rail with onehaltl its thickness upon each side of a line at right angles with and ,perpendicular to the center of radiation when the faces of 1S and C are parallel. l
To iiicilitate placing the rail in this indispensable positioin an indicator line is made upon the table at 'o and-o' ot theline t'ronrthe center of motion, and a scale, R-,made upon or attached'to the table. The
adjusted thereby accordingly, by the screw e, which works in the slot c' of the movable felice E.
Other means than that described, for changing the v inclining of the tipping table with the stui to be opfor the same purpose and have the same eiect as the devices heretofore and above described; but by the use oi' the several modes, the forms or ways, as heretofore and above described, I ind to be the preferable one.
What I claim as my improvements, and desire to secure, is-
l. The tipping table C, having the adjustable stop or fence E, in combination with the saws or cutters M and M2 and form K, in the manner and foi` the pur pose described. v
2. lhe oscillating table G, in combination with the saws or cutters M1 and M2 and Aform J, in the manner and for the purpose described.
naar.:
with the graduated scale R arranged upon table C, in l the manner and for the purpose described.
The tipping reciprocating table C, having'the adjustable stop vor fence E, indicator linep o', in combination with the temper or setiscrew F, in the manner and for the purpose described. v
