Original application filed March 14, 1914, Serial No. 1914. Serial T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ARTHUR C. HARRING- ron, a citizen of the United States, residing at Monon, in the county of White and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vises, being a division of my copending application, filed March 1 1, 1914, Serial No. 821,738, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improve ments in vises and the object of the invention is to provide a device of this general character having novel and improved means whereby the working jaws are automatically maintained in separated relation and which are caused to move one toward the other to effect the requisite clamping action under the influence of manually operated means.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved vise whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will be carefully defined in the appended claims.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a vise constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention; Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the device as disclosed in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the device as herein disclosed, with certain of the parts being omitted; Fig. 41 is a sectional view sul stantially on the line 4l--l of Fig. 2; and Fig. 5 is a sectional view substantially on the line 55 of Fig. 2.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, 1. denotes a base of any preferred configuration and dimensions and having suitably anchored thereto the vertically disposed frame 11, the upper extremity whereof being angularly disposed to afford the work table 12. to the opposite extremities whereof are pivotally engaged, as at 15, the vertically disposed levers 16 having their upper extremities bent inwardly to afford the vise jaws 20 overlying the forward portion of the work table 12. Coacting with the cross arm 2 is a supplemental bracket 3 substantially U- shape in form and projecting forwardly from the frame 11 and in substantially a horizontal plane and through which the pivots 15 for the levers 16 are also directed, as is believed to be clearly indicated in the accompanying drawings.
The lower extremities of the levers 16 are inclined inwardly, as indicated at 17, and mounted for vertical movement between such inclined portions 17 is the rock arm 18 having laterally disposed oppositely directed spaced arms 19 having mounted therebetween the rollers 21 adapted to contact with the inner edges of the inclined portions 17 of the levers 16 whereby downward movement of the rock arm 18 will result in a relative inward movement of the jaws 20 with a minimum of friction.
As herein disclosed, the rock arm or lever 18 is directed through a vertically disposed elongated slot 22 formed in the frame 11 while the inner extremity of such rock arm or lever is connected, as indicated at 23, to the supplemental frame 4 disposed rearwardly of the frame 11 at the base or lower portion thereof and operatively connected therewith, as is believed to be clearly shown in the accompanying drawings, such frame being substantially U-shape in form, as is believed to be clearly shown in Fig. 1.
The outer or opposite extremity of the rock arm or lever 18 is provided with a treadle 24 adapted to be engaged by the foot of the operator whereby requisite movement of the arm 16 may be effected when desired. The vise jaws 20 are adapted to be normally separated and, as herein disclosed, this position is maintained through the medium of the retractable member 25 suitably secured at its opposite ends, as indicated at 26, to the arm 16 at suitable points below their pivotal connections 15 hereinbefore referred to.
In order that the vise jaws may maintain their normal position, it is necessary that the rock arm or lever 18 be normally maintained at the limit of its upward movement and, as herein set forth, this is accomplished through the medium of the expansible member 27 having one end secured, as at 28, to the rock arm or lever 18 in advance of its pivotal connection 23 while the" opposite extremity is secured, as at 29, to the supplemental frame 4: above such rock arm or lever, as is believed to be self-evident.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a vise constructed in accordance with my invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and by reason of the'effectiveness with which it performs its functions, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without material departure from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limitin myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several partsherein shown in carrying out my invention in practice. 1 a i Iclaim:

2. A device of the character described comprising an upwardly directed frame provided with a work table, a bracket carried by the frame projecting forwardly and upwardly therefrom, a cross arm carried by the upper extremity of the bracket and projecting beyond opposite sides thereof, a second bracket projecting forwardly of the frame and terminating in close proximity to the cross arm of the first named bracket, levers positioned intermediate of' the cross arm and the second bracket and pivotally supported thereby, the upper extremities of the levers being angularly disposed to overlie the work table, the lower extremities of said levers being disposed inwardly on predetermined inclines, a supplemental frame disposed rearwardly of the first mentioned frame'at the lower portion thereof and operatively con nected therewith, said first mentioned frame being provided in its lower end portion with a longitudinally disposed elongated'slot, a rock arm pivotallyengaged with the supplemental frame and disposed through the slot of the first mentioned frame and extended between the inclined portions of the levers, and a retractable member interposed between the rock arm and the supplemental frame for normally maintaining the rock arm in an elevated position, said rock arm being provided with means whereby the same may be depressed and being adapted to contact with the inclined extremities of the levers when depressed for imparting movement thereto in unison but in reverse directions.
