CAN-BODY BLANK.
menses. Original application filed October 31,
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and countyof San Francisco and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Can-Body Blanks, of which the following is a specifi-' in the end covers are double seamed onto a flanged end of the can body,-the present application being a division of the application filed by me in the United States Patent Office on the 31st day of October, l9l2- Serial No. 728928, for an improvement in can bodies The objects of the invention are to so construct a blank that when the same is formed into a can body it will provide against the extreme end joint connections of the longitudinal side seam union breaking, separating, or pulling apart when the soldered can body is subjected to the action of the flanging rollers or devices for outwardly flaring or flanging the ends of the can body for the interlocking therewith of the can coversyor' end; reduce the thickness of the metal at the said extreme end joint connections; provide for the formation of a better solder 5 connection at such portions of the can body; materially increase the strength of the said end or lap joint sections of the can body;
provide against leaks at the extreme end joint connections of the said body, and in general materially improve the end oint union or'connections of the lap portions at the ends of the side seam joint, and by so doing, increasing the eiiiciency. of the can, I body for the purposes desired.
Ordinarily, and more especially so where the union of the longitudinal edges of a can body blank when put-into cylindrical form is made by what is known .as a part lock and lap joint, seam union, the extreme end edges of the. lap section of the can body are substantially co-extensive with the ends of the underlying section, and the end Specification or Letters Patent.
M. YOUNG,
edges of the said sections fall in the same horizontal plane, with the result that when the closed and soldered lap portions of the can body are subjected to the action of the flanging mechanism for outwardly flaring the ends of the said can body, the lap sectrons of the side seam pull away from the underlying section at the corner edges of theside seam and break the solder union at such points and causes a bulging of the metal, and this breaking of the joint connection at the end corners of the joint union of the side seam and the bulging of the metal resulting therefrom not only seriously interferes with the proper double seaming of a can cover thereto, but ofttimes is the cause of 'a leak at such points of thecompleted can. I experience that if the extreme end corners of the end edges of the lap section of the can body'blank be cut away and removed for a d stance slightly below the horizontal edge of the blank, there will be provided a clearance space at the extreme end or edge corv ners of the side seam of the formed can body and the said corner edges of the lap section will terminate a short distance below the plane of the circumferential edge of the can body,forming end pockets which are filled with solder on the closed can body being subjected to the action of the soldering mechanism, which solder is forced under the lap sections of the lap seam union and gives additional strength at such points of the side seam to resist or prevent the seam from opening or breaking apart under the;
action of the mechanism for fianging the end of the can body and double seaming the covers thereto; also the extreme end corner edges of the ends of lap sections of the side seam being removed or lowered a slight distance below the plane of the circumferential edge of the can body there is removed the slight projection which is OIdlnarily formed by the outside lap at the, extreme ends of the side seam of the can body, and which is crushed or mashed by the action of the flanging mechanism to such an extent as to distort and at times break the joint-union at such points; again, by reason of the corner cut outs at the end corners of the lap or outside lap section of the can body blank there is on the blank being formed into a can body less material Patented Jan. as, 1915. i
1912, Serial N0. 728,9%8. Divided m this application filed May 9,
1914. Serial No. 837,425. 4
I have found from practical ,a co'verbeing applied thei'eto, and equally so less material, at such points tobe outwardly turned during the flaring of the ends ofthe can body, all of -which reduces the strainon the machinesfor fianging the ends of the can body'and double seaming the covers thereto. Another advantage for the notch or cut out formed at the extreme end corners of the lap or outside lap edge section of the can body blank is that, if the ends'of the can body blank are not brought into perfect registry when formed into a can body in the can making machinery so that one end stands slightly higher than'the other, still; when the body is locked and soldered the ends ofthe outer portion or lap section of the body will not be'above the ends of the inner portion. This is a material help in theflanging "of 'the'ends of a can body, inasmuch as a formed and soldered body with one end slightly higher than the other will make imperfect flanging,
causing the outer part of the body to buckle or turn upward, producing imperfect double seaming, usually resulting in a leaky can.
To comprehend the invention, reference should be had to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 1s a plan view' of the improved body blank. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a can body formed therefrom. Fig. 3 is a similar view of the can body after having one of its ends flanged.
In the drawings, referring to Figs. 1, 2
and 3 thereof, the numeral 1 designates the metallic blank, 2 and 3 the locking edge por-- tions of the blank, and 4 and 5 the end lap sections of the locking edge portions. The
'end lap oroutside lap sections. 4 are formed with a cut out 6 to place the extreme end corners thereof a slight distance below the plane of the horizontal edge 6 of the blank, so that when the blank is formed into a can body 7 there is produced a pocket 8 at the upper corner of each end of the side seam 9, the end or corner 10 of each lap end of the side seam 9 of the canbody being situated at a point a slight distance below the plane of the circumferential edge 10 of the ends of the can body. As thus placed, there is no edge corner at the ends of the side seam to be acted on by the fianging mechanism to be torn apart, separated or bulged outwardly by thestrain placed onto the metalduring the out-turning thereof, and the pockets 8 formed by the out out 6 provide a space for the reception of solder which is forced into the lap seam sections when'subjected to the action of the soldering mechanism in a much better manner than heretofore and which serves as added strength at such points of the side seam ofthecan body and prevents the lap sections of the side seam from opening up under the act of flanging the ends of the can body and double seaming the covers onto the same.
With the use of the improved blank for theformation of a can body there is no distortion; of the ends of the side seam nor is I the samebroken, separated or torn apart at the end; corners during the flanging operation, which is 'animportant feature in con nection with the doublesea med' sanitary cans, inasmuchyas it reduces imperfect and leaky cans to a minimum.
While the invention-has been illustrated and described for use in connection with what is known as a" combined locked and lap joint side seam, its use is not so limited or restricted, inasmuch as it is equally applicable to a lap or tea lockside seamed can body, and it is to be understood that bythe expressed lap joint reference is had to the end portions of the side seam and this'irre- .spective as to what form of joint union is made intermediate, such portions of the side seam. The essential feature of the invention and that desired to be covered broadlyresides in cutting away the extreme edge cor- ,ner of the. outside lap section of the blank to place the same, when the blank is formed into a .can body, below the plane of the cirsections, and a cut out formed in the upper corner edge of each of the outside lap sections of. the blank, whereby the lower edge of each -cut-out of said end corner of each lap section when the blank is formedinto a 'can body is placed a slight distance below the upper edge of the opposing lap sections. 7 I
In testimony whereof I have signed my name tothis specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. v
