To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, ROBERT McIN'rosH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ashland, in the county of Ashland and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Jacks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in lifting jacks adapted for use preferably with automobiles and other vehicles, and has particular reference to apparatus of this character embodying a longitudinally movable bar or lift element which is elevated by a single stroke of an operating lever.
An important object of the invention is to provide a jack of the above mentioned character, which is simple in construction, strong, durable, and convenient in use.
A further object of the invention is to provide means whereby the bar or lift element will be given a longitudinal movement of the desired length upon a single down strrke of the operating lever.
A further object of the invention is to provide means whereby the lift element or bar may be quickly and easily adjusted to engage the load to be raised, prior to and independently of the mechanical elevation of the same.
A further objectof the invention is to provide means whereby the lift element or bar may be automatically dropped before or after the load has been removed therefrom, by a simple manipulation of the operating lever or handle.
A further object of the invention is to provide means to positively lock together the several parts of the jack when the operating handle assumes a certain position, whereby the apparatus as a whole may be conveniently handled without such parts separating.
A further object of the invention is to provide means for effecting the longitudinal movement of the lift element or bar, said means being adapted when in their inner or locked position to be substantially vertically arranged, whereby pressure of the load transmitted thereto will be advantageously distributed upon the same to be supported thereby, with the minimum danger of the said means breaking or becoming other wise inoperative.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part ofthis specification and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a jack embodying my invention, Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same showing the operating lever or handle in its lowermost position, Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the operating lever in the intermediate position, Fig. l is a similar view showing the operating lever in the uppermost position, Fig. 5 is an edge elevation of the jack, and, Fig. 6 is a horizontal sectional view taken on line 6-6 of Fig. 4.
1n the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration, is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 10 designates a standard, provided at its lower end with a foot 11, as shown. This standard is preferably tubular and is also preferably formed square in cross-section, as more clearly illustrated in Fig. 6.
Mounted to reciprocate within the tubular standard 10 is a lift bar or element 12, preferably provided upon its opposite sides with channels 13, as shown. This lift bar or element is provided along its forward longitudinal edge with spaced superposed ratchet teeth 14, extending forwardly beyond the forward edge of the tubular standard 10, through a longitudinal opening or slot 15, as shown.
Contiguous with its forward longitudinal edge the lift bar or element 12 is provided with a vertical element or bearing 16, the lower end of which is provided with an abrupt shoulder 17, arranged above the uppermost tooth 14: and serving as one of such teeth, as will be apparent hereinafter. The element or bearing 16 is preferably ta'pered and increases in diameter upwardly, as shown.
There are grooves 18, adjacent the opposite sides of the element or bearing 16, for receiving flanges 19 constituting the side walls of the longitudinal opening 15 of the tubular standard 10.
The numeral 20 designates a head or rest, which preferably has a concave upper surface to engage with the load. This head or rest is swiveled to the element or bearing 16, for free rotation in a horizontal plane. While this swiveled connection may be effected in any desired manner, I prefer to provide the element or bearing 18 with an upstanding trunnion 21, rotatably mounted within an opening .22 formed through a depending shank or boss 23, carried by the head 20.
A screw 24 serves to prevent the head from being removed from the trunnion, as is obvious.
The means whi :h effect the longitudinal movement of the lift bar or element embodies a toggle joint structure having detachable connection or engagement with the teeth ll of the lift bar or element 12. Such operating means comprises a lower link :25, arranged between and pivotally connected with spaced cars 26, preferably cast integral with the tubular standard 10 above and adjacent the lower end of the longitudinal opening or slot 15. This link has its upper end forked, as shown, for receiving the lower end of a pawl 27, such lower end being pivoted therein, as shown at 28. The pawl 27 has its upper end bent inwardly slightly, as shown at 2 forming an extension or tooth to engage with the teeth carried by the lift bar or element 12. At this point it is thought proper to state that the toggle joint structure including the link 25 and pawl are arranged wholly upon the forward edge of the tubular standard 10, outwardly of and adjacent the teeth carried by the lift bar or element This feature of the invention is important inasmuch as it provides means whereby when the link and pawl 27 occupy their inner or looking positions. for holding the lift bar or element 12 with the load thereon, said link and pawl will be substantially vertically arranged, with their inner walls preferably engaging the teeth carried by the lift bar or element, whereby the weight upon the lift bar or element will be directly transmitted to these elements in their vertical positions so that they will offer the greatest strength to support the weight.
The toggle joint structure is operated or expanded longitudinally by an operating lever 30, arranged upon the opposite or rear edge of the tubular standard 10. This operating lever has its pivot end in the form of a bell-crank lever 31, which is forked for providing spaced cranks or arms 32, as shown. Arranged between the inner ends of the cranks or arms a supporting arm or bracket 33, preferably formed integral with the upper end of the rear edge of the tubular standard 10, the arms or ranks being pivotally connected therewith by means of a pivot element or pin 34 or the like.
Pivotally connected with the outer ends of the cranks or arms by means of a transverse pin or pivot element 35 are links or straps 36, pivotally connected at their opposite ends, as shown at 37, with trunnions 38, preferably formed integral with the pawl 27 near and above the pivot 28, as shown.
When the operating lever is in the lowermost position, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, the pivot 35 will be swung downwardly past dead center, hereby the operating lever 30 is locked in the lowermost position. The jack may now lie handled or carried from place to place by the operator taking hold of the head or rest the lever ll) now serving to lock the pawl 27 and associated elements in the inner position,
which in turn hold or look the lift bar or element 12 against longitudinal movement within the tubular standard Ill). This is an important feature of the invention, as in f 15.8 of this general type, great inconvenience has been encountered by the factthat the operator not infrequently attempts to lift the jack by taking hold of the lift bar or element or head carried thereby, with the result that the lift bar is completely separated from the stand-art. It is obvious that the parts of the apparatus will have to be again assembled before the same can be used.
To lift the load, the operating lever is preferably swung to its uppermost position, as indicated in fig. l, the lift bar or element 12 being adjusted or elevated by the operatoltaking hold of the same and moving it upwardly until the head or rest 20 engages the load to be raised. The operating lever 30 is then swung downwardly, with the result that the links or straps 36 swing the pawl 27 and link 25 upwardly and inwardly. until they assume the vertical position. This operation is clearly illustrated in Figs. 3 and l'Vhen the lift bar or element 1! is in the elevated position and supporting the load, the operating lever 30 is locked in its lowermost position, as above stated, whereby the toggle joint structure is locked in the inner position.
The load may be lowered by swinging the operating lever 30 upwardly, with the result that the toggle joint structure is longitudinally contracted. The lift bar or element 12 may be instantly dropped, with or without the load, by swinging the operating element 30 to the uppermost position, the tooth or extension 25;) of the pawl 2'7 then disengaging the teeth carried by the lift bar or element. This operation is ynirticularly advantageous, prior to locking the lift bar 12 in its lower position, the two operations being effected by first swinging the operatlever 30 to the uppermost position, whereby the lift bar or element 12 is dropped and then swinging the operating lever to the lowermost position to lock the lift bar or element against movement.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herevaith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that various changes in the shape, size, and arrangement of parts may be re sorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. A ack of the character described, com prising a standard, a lift bar slidably engaging therewith and provided with teeth, a pawl to engage with the teeth, means connecting the lower end of the pawl with the standard, an operating lever pivotally connected with the standard, and connecting means between the operating lever and the pawl, whereby when the operating lever is swung downwardly the pawl is elevated in engagement with the teeth and when the 0perating lever is swung to its uppermost position the pawl is moved out of engagement with the teeth to drop the lift bar.
A jack of the character described, comprising a standard, a lift bar having slidable engagement therewith and provided upon one longitudinal edge with teeth, a vertically movable pawl adapted to engage with the teeth, and means to lock the pawl against movement and in engagement with the teeth when said pawl is in a substantially vertical position.
