Letters PatentfNo. 112,443, dated March 7,1871.
i `The eliedle referred to nIthese Letters Patent and making part of the same.
I p To allwima 'itmayconcern:A
Be it known that LEBENEZER AlIGooDEs, of the city and county` oflhilanelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented `new and usefnlDevices forl Printing Oil-Giotlis and Ido hereby declare the following to 'be` `a I clear and I exactedescription oi' the nature tlieieoi',IIsnlicientIto enable others skilled in thcartI towhichnmy invention appertains to fully I understaudanduse the same,`reference beinghad tothe accompanying drawing 4making part of this "spcciiicatiomjn which-pf l Figui-el is "a top or plan View of the `device illustrating `my invention. y

Figure I5 isa side vievvfof the'i'rnechanism for Inov- IMy invention `relates Ito aI device for printing oilcloths, and :consists in ya reciprocating block-carrier V`mounted onIan oscillating frame, in connection with `mechanism forIopeI-atingthem. p I I f` ;It also jconsists in"`fthecoinbination of a block-car- Lrier, carrier-trame, n an" intermittent feed mechanism,

jllt also consistsininechanism ibrieeding the cloths. p, bnsists in means` for `adjusting the degree of impression; M1 I I I d'n the drawing- .v 1 I I, 'p
`A A representsa` suitable.. frame for properly supporting cert-ainpartsof the operating mechanism.
" `ToIthe sides of this frame is pivoted `a frame, B,
whichI oscillateson itsfnlcrnrn b, and is provided with. slides or guides on-which"` plays or works a secondary frame,"(l,` .which carries the printing-blocks. I
" Eis anoscillating shaft, having its ybearingin the I frame et, andinas Vconnected to itan arm, D. ;IThe sliait`.1"eceivesan oscillating motion `in the present case'lthrough theV medium of an arm, E, and
" a rod, c,connected'toacrankpG, on the `maini shaft.
" jI isan` armlfsecnred to la shaft, J, which isinounted `K, which `isljointed' toffpthe rear foi? Ithejoscillating ing trame E receivesits reciprocating motion byI-the oli-eration of .the arm um carries the ,printing blocksback'ivard andfforward;`l
When the, slide is carried to its extreme forward I position the impression will be made.v
This is done at the moment that the crank G'passes its cent-er, and. the sliding frame becomes. stationary the `front portion of the frame B upon the cloth and thus gives the impression. I I The color-rollers are located beneath. the oscillating frame B, and when Gmalres its return motion theprintiug-blocks are 'prepared for the impression.
One or more rollers may be used for the purpose of' distributing thc color evenly over the surfac'eof the printing-blocks.
The degree of impression is readily regulated by the means of the set-screwr and cam-pieces H.
The devices for moving the cloth the proper distance and at the. proper time consists of a belt or band, L, which passes around rollers l l, placed at the ends of the printing-table, and inoves"ovcr the top `of .the table carrying thecloth to be printed.
The beit is held in. position hy an additional strip of one or more thicknesses lof the same material attached at one edge, and forming a ange projecting inwardly and tting intoagroove or grooves in the rollers'l Z.
The cloth to be printed is held in position by the 4byImeans of the ,cam H, which, .during one revolution of the main shaft, raises the arm I. This depresses upper Vroller M bearing on it, and one or more small toothed Wheels resting on its edge and pressing it l with sufficient firmness against the table as it moves I along, to preyentdisplacement. v
An intermittentmotion is given to the cloth by means of a ratchetwheel, N, .which is attached to the end of ashaft passing through' one of the rollers I,
`and operated by a toothed-bar, O, which is pivoted at its lower end to aslide, P, connected to an. adjustable crank, Q, onthe main shaft, by 'a rod, R.
By moving the end ofthe connecting-rod to or from the center of the main shaft, the length ot' the movement of the cloth can be accurately adj usted.
The toothed bar O is held inposition against the wheel N by a spring, S. p Y
By detaching the arm D'and rod K from the oscillating frame B, the machine may be operated by hand, the sliding frame G being moved back and forth by lmeans of a belt or other suitable device, Ithe ends of which are attached to the sliding frame after being passed aroundIthe roller T at one end of the oscillating-frame B,'and a pulley, t, at the Vother end, said roller being turned by a crank, U, on one end of .its shaft.
The cloth may be moved by a crank on the fbrivard end of' the roller l. The distance for moving the cloth may be indicated by a 'gauge-'plate on theendoi' roller.
of the blocks is between each set of blocks for the different colors. This is for Athe purpose of keeping .the colors separate and pure or clear.
The cloth is passed under the first block'(`whieh, say, isblack) and receives an impression. It is then moved forward by the mechanism the width of one block, when the part just printed will be under the blank space between the blocks, and will consequently receive no impression, but the cloth will receive a second impression adjoining. the first one-from the black block.
It is again moved forward the width of one block, as before, and this time the portion first printed cornes under the second block, (red,) and the machine now makes two impressions, one ot' led and an additional one of black, :md (if printing in two colors) will continue doing so to the end of the piece.
Having thus described my invention,
Vhat I claim as new, and desire tov secure by Letters Patent, isv l. The reciprocating carrier C and arm D, in connection with the oscillating frame 'B and rod K, and
screws h h, substantiallv as yand for the purpose described. I l
To the above I have signed my-name this 13th day of July, 1870.
