To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Cnamins l). loose, a citizen of the United States, residing at Altoona, in the county of Blair and State of Pennsylvania, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Blll*SllOGS, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to brake shoes having a cast body and a wrought back. The inventio'n has for its primary objects the provision of an improved type of Wrought metal back, and one which. can be produced from sheets of metal such as sheet steel, u'itl a minimum of scrap. One 8l11l')0(llll1(311ll of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figures 1 and 2 are plan and side elevation views respectively of the shoe, with the embedded portions of the back indicated in dotted lines, Figs. 3 and at are transverse sections on the lines ll1-lll and IV-IV respectively of Fig. 2 and Fig. Sis a plan view of a sheet of metal, showing the method of cutting out the backs without waste.
The Wrought metal back is preferably in the form of an H as indicated in Fig. 5, such H comprising the legs 1,7 1, 1, 1, the cross bar 2, and the extensions of such cross bar, 8, 3, such extensions projecting out past the side edges of the legs. The legs 1, l. l, 1,, embedded in the body portion l of the shoe by placing the wrought back in the mold and casting the body portion 4; in the usual Way;
. As indicated in Figs. 1 and 2, the lag is formed by the cross bar 2, the ends of the legs 1 adjacent such cross bar being bent up as indicated in Fig. 2. The extensions 3, 3, at the ends of the cross bar are bent down as indicated in Figs. 2 and 3, thus providing additional metal and greater stiffness in the lug.
The legs 1', 1, 1, 1, instead of being left flat are bent into curved cross section as indica ed in Fig. 4;, the central portion of each leg coinii'ig flush with the. top of the cast metal of the shoe, While toe edge are embedded securely in the bod of the shoe. This arrangement gives the legs additional stiffness, and embeds their: more securely in the cast metal.

It will be seen that this would not be the case if the length C of the extensions were greater or less than half the Width of one of the legs.

In combination in a brake shoe, a cast body portion, and a rought back of H form. having the legs thereof embedded in the body portion and the cross bar bent up to form a lug, the ends of the cross bar being extended past the'outside edges of the legs and bent down at right angles to the body portion of the cross bar.
2. in combination in a brake shoe, a cast body portion, and a Wrought back having its end portions embedded in the body portion and having its central portion bent up in ii form to provide a lug, the upper portion of the lug having its side edges extended out past the side edges of the back and bent noun partiallyclosing the opening through the lug.

A Wrought brake shoe back of sheet metal in the form of an H with the space between the legs substantially equal to the width of one of the legs and with the bar of the H extended out laterally past the side edges of the legs a distance equal substantially to one-half the Width of one of the legs.
