Be. it known that I, MARsHALL BURNS LLoYo, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Menominee, county of Menominee, and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collapsible (to-Carts, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to baby-carriages or go-carts of the foldable or collapsible type.

This present application is a division of my co-pending application filed February 12, 1910, Serial No. 543,611, entitled collapsible go-carts, and pertains to the foot hood disclosed therein. The said co-pending application relates to a go-cart which by a single movement may be collapsed into a compact parcel so that it may be easily carried about; and, which may also be opened by a single movement.

The invention claimed in this application is a novel foot-hood on the forward part of the main frame of a collapsible or foldable go-cart and adapted to cover the feet and legs of a child therein. This hood is collapsible and as hereinafter pointed out may be coupled to the main collapsible structure to fold therewith.

My invention also consists in the various details of construction and in the combinations of parts all as hereinafter described and pointed out in the appended claims.

My invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanving drawings forming a part of this specification and in which;

Figure 1 is a side elevation of a collapsible go-cart equipped with a foot hood, according to my invention; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the cart in folded or collapsed condition, certain parts being broken away to clearly show the collapsed foot hood; Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical section of the body of the go-cart showing further details of the foot hood; Fig. 4 is an enlarged plan view of the front part of the go-cart frame showing the positions of the hood bows when the hood is raised; and Fig. 5 is a still further enlarged sectional detail of the pivot arrangement of the foot hood bows.

The collapsible go-cart shown in these drawings is of a type which is characterized by a rectangular main frame 2 and folding wheel containers that are swung in and out beneath the frame 2 by the folding and unfolding action of the pivoted handle or pusher 2 H represent the arms of the collapsible go-cart. The rear ends of these arms are pivoted to the handle 2*. The front ends are supported by side bars 5, pivoted thereto and to an intermediate part of the main frame 2. The main frame is equipped with a seat 6 of which 7 is the adjustable back. The front end of the seat may extend slightly beyond the side bars 5, 5. The space between the front end of the seat and the front end 2 of the main frame is occupied by a foot well 8 and the foot hood about to be described. A cross bar 9 connects opposite sides of the main frame and this cross bar as shown in Figs. 3, 4. and 5 is provided with forward extending lugs 9.

My invention may be made in various forms but I prefer that the foot hood shall in all cases comprise at least two

10 and 11, and preferably 16. covered by suitable flexible fabric 12. I also prefer that the foot hood shall be operatively coupled to some moving part of the go-cart superstructure such as the side bars 5, to theend that the foot hood may be readily supported and maintained in distended condition when the go-cart is distended and in use; and to the further end that the foot hood shall be antomatically distensible and collapsible with the other parts of the go-cart. The bow 10 has its rear end attached to the cross bar 9, as by means of the lugs 9. Its front end is attached to and supported by the front end or cross bar 2 of the main frame; preferably by means of the studs 10 fastened in the how 10 and extending through holes 2 in the cross bar 2 of the main frame. It may here be noted that upon the detachment of the rear ends of the bows from the cross bar 9 the studs 10 may be withdrawn from the front end of the frame 2, and the hood removed. T he foot hood bows 10 11 and 16 are pivoted upon the main frame; that is, upon the lugs 9 which are attached to the main frame through the medium of the cross bar 9. The points of attachment are substantially co-incident with the points at which the side bars 5 are pivoted to the main frame, and the construction of the hood is such that when it is distended, the bow 11 occupies a substantially vertical position in front of the seat.

The bow 11 rises to practically the same height as the arms 4 of the go-cart and as the hood extends forward to the end of the foot well, it is obvious that the foot well will comfortably accommodate and protect the feet and legs of a child occupying the seat of the go-cart. In the structure shown I have combined the foot hood and the foot well. The fabric covering 12 forms not only the top but also the sides of the foot hood, and by attaching the sheet of fabric which forms the foot well to the how 10, I provide a complete combined foot well and foot hood which is free from openings through which cold drafts might enter the foot hood.

To provide a support for the feet of the child when reclining in the go-cart, I make the foot well adjustable, as by equipping the foot well proper with a folding board 8 which may be dropped into the bottom of the well or raised by straps 8" to the position shown by dotted lines 8 shown in Fig. 3. A piece of cloth 8" is attached to the front end of the seat 6 and to the upper edge of the folding board 8". When the board is elevated by drawing out the straps 8"" and fastening them as shown by dotted lines 8*, the fabric 8" will be stretched to the position shown by dotted lines 8 of Fig. 3, thereby forming an elevated or false floor for the foot well in the hood.

As a convenient means of opening and closing the foot hood, I provide the same with two toggle levers 13, one on each side of the hood. The ends of these levers are pivoted upon the

10 and 11 and from the middle pivots of the toggles coupling bars 14 extend to detachablefastenings 15 on the sidebars 5. The detachable fastenings comprise studs projecting from the bars 5 and hooks on the rear ends of the bars 14. It will be clear that when the side bars 5 are folded forward upon the main frame through the action. of the handle 2 the coupling bar will break or collapse the toggle levers 13 and thus lower or collapse the bows ll and 16 onto the main frame. Reverse movement of the handle and bars 5 autcmaticallyv raises or distends the hood. As indicated by the bow 16 my hood may contain one or more intermediate bows pivoted upon the common centers or lugs 9', and serving to elevate the intermediate portion or portions of the hood covering or fabric.

A s various modifications of my invention will readily suggest themselves to one who is skilled in the art, I do not limit my invention to the precise structure herein shown and described but instead directspecial attentionto the appendedclaim i iil which my invention is distinctlyset i I Haas; tliesfds aih l r lIlYQP lQ H I claim as new and desire to secure Letters Patent:

1. In a childs go-cart, a seat, a back, and arms, in combination with a foot well in front of said seat, and a collapsible bowed foot hood that is substantially co-extensive with said foot well and which rises substantially to the height of said arms and covers said foot well.

2. In a childs collapsible go-cart, a seat,

and collapsible arms, in combination with a foot well which is adjustable to sitting and reclining positions, a collapsible foot hood which extends substantially from said arms to the front end of said foot well, and means for holding the bows of said hood distended.

3. In a childs go-cart, a seat, a back, and arms, in combination with a foot well which is a continuation of said seat and is adjustable to sitting and reclining positions, a collapsible bowed foot hood substantially covering said foot well, the bows of said hood being pivoted at the front end of said seat and of substantially the same length and breadth as the foot well.

In a childs go-cart, a seat, a back, and arms, in combination with a foot well continuation of said seat, mainly composed of fabric and adjustable to sitting and reclining positions, and a bowed foot hood forming a top for said foot well and also mainly composed of fabric, the bows of said hood being pivoted at the front end of the seat and adapted to fold upon the foot well.

5. In a childs go-cart, a seat, a back, and arms, in combination with a foot well continuation of said seat, mainly composed of fabric and adjustable to sitting and reclining positions, a collapsible foot hood substantially co-extensive with said foot well and also mainly composed of fabric, said hood having supporting bows pivoted at the front end of said seat, and the fabric of the well and hood joining upon one of said bows.

6. In a childs collapsible go-cart, a seat and collapsible arms, in combination with a collapsible foot well mainly composed of fabric and adjustable to'sitting and reclining positions, a collapsible, bowed foot hood also mainly composed of fabric and forming a cover for said foot well, said hood having its bows pivoted at the front end of said seat, the bottom bow serving as the fastening for. said fabrics, and means for holding i the top bow upright before said arms.

7 In a childs go-cart, a, frame in combination with a seat and folding arms, a vertically adjustable foot well in front of said seat and hanging below said frame, a collapsible foot hood above said frame and having supporting bows, and said hood being substantially as high as said arms and as long. as said foot well. 13 a ce lersih e as ert, a. tramin combination with a seat, a folding seat superstructure and a folding handle, a foot well occupying a space between the seat and the end of said frame, means for adjusting said well to sitting and reclining positions, and a foot hood composed of fabric and pivotal bows secured above said foot Well and connected with said superstructure to fold therewith.

9. In a childs go-cait, a frame in combination with a seat superstructure foldable thereon, a collapsible, combined foot well and foot hood comprising pivotal bows and a covering of fabric, said bows having their rear ends attached to the frame at the front end of said superstructure, the bottom bow having its forward end detachably secured to said frame, and means for securing the top bow upright before said superstructure.

10. In a childs g0-cart, a frame in combination with a seat superstructure foldable on said frame, a collapsible foot hood comprising pivotal bows and a covering of fab ric, said bows having their rear ends attached to the frame at the front end of said superstructure, the bottom bow having its forward end attached to said frame, and links detachably securing the top bow upright before said superstructure.

11. In a childs go-cart, a frame in combination with a seat superstructure foldable on said frame, a collapsible foot hood comprising pivotal bows and a covering of fabric, said bows having their rear ends attached to the frame at the front end of said superstructure, the bottom bow having its forward end attached to said frame, and links detachably securing the top bow upright before said superstructure and causing said hood and superstructure to open and close together.
