To @ZZ whom t may concern Be it known that I, ARTHUR HORACE F RANCKs, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at rlottenham, Middlesex, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas-Lighting Apparatus, of which the following is a specilication.
This invention relates to that class of gas lighting apparatus in which the cock or valve controlling the burners is connected by mechanism with a diaphragm or bell which is actuated by an increase of pressure of gas in the main and which is assisted in its movement by the use of a tumbler weight or its equivalent the lighting being effected by a pilot light.
Now the object of my invention is to construct such appliances for actuating the cock or valve in an improved manner as hereafter described so that a more efficient action is obtained thereby rendering such appliances less liable to stick or inefliciently perform their operations.
My invention will be clearly understood from the following description aided by the annexed drawings in which Figure l is a sectional elevation of the apparatus with the bell in the down position and the mechanism corresponding. F ig. 2 is a similar view to Fig. 1 with the bell in the up position and the mechanism corresponding. Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation of the apparatus at right angles to that shown in Fig. 1. Fig. l is a plan of the apparatus with the bell and cover removed, the mechanism being in the position shown in Fig, 1. Fig. 5 is a sectional elevation of the box or casing showing the passages to the burner and by-pass.
For the purpose of the invention the apparatus is preferably constructed so that a bell 1 dipping into mercury, glycerin or suitable liquid in a circular trough 2 provided in a case 3 can be employed, such case forming the gas chamber.
Inside the case 3, is positioned a box or casing df containing the valve or cock 5 (preferably hollow and open at one end and preferably of the three way kind) the axle of which carries a ratchet wheel o also positioned within the case 3, the supply to the box or casing a being from inside the apparatus and from the valve or cock to the burner or burners. Inside the case 3 and across the center is positioned and secured a frame forming a bridge 7 having holes for receiving a stem or rod 8y carried by and projecting inside the gas bell 1, the bridge 7 acting as a guide for the proper up and down movement of the bell 1 and rod 8. On the rod 8, is positioned a block 9 which may have an arm l0 riding` in a slot in one wall of the bridge 7 to prevent rotary movement of the rod and on one side of this block is pivoted a swinging link 10n having a tooth 11 which normally has contact with the ratchet wheel 6 on the gas cock or valve 5 to rotate same.
At some part inside the case 3, preferably to a stud 12 on the bridge 7 is pivoted a bell crank 13 and to one arm 13LL (a short arm) is pivotally connected a link 14 which is also pivotally connected to the block 9 on the rod 8 of the bell l while the other or longer arm 13b of the bell crank 13 carries a weight 15 which may be capable of being varied in size or of being moved laterally along the arm 13b and when the bell 1 is down both arms of the bell crank 13 lie on the same side of the vertical rod 8 of the bell l, see Fig. l, but when the bell 1 is up the arms on the bell crank 13 lie on opposite sides7 see Fig. 2.
it the side of the valve box 4, is arranged a stuffing box 16 or its equivalent which carries a stem 17 having a projecting arm 18 positioned outside the case 3 and another projecting arm 19 inside the case, said inside arm 19 engaging a slotted link 20 pivoted to the case or the bridge 7 and carrying a lever 21, the free end of which has a tooth or projecting pin 22 which rides over the ratchet wheel 6 of the gas cock or valve 5, said pin or tooth 22 acting as a stop pawl for preventing the gas cock 5 beingoperated in the reverse direction from any cause and also as a means for operating the gas cock 5 from outside when desired.
rllhe bell 1 is, as will be understood, of a weight or weighted to suit the normal pressure of the district when in its lowest position and the gas under normal pressure will pass through pipe 23 into the case without affecting the bell 1, but when it is desired to operate the gas cock 5 to either turn on or turn oiin the gas at the burner, an increase of pressure in the main, generally established at the works, passing through the pipe 23 into the case will lift the bell 1 and in so doing the link 10f1L will engage a tooth of the ratchet wheel 6 and operate the gas cock 5 while the other link 14E will move the bell crank 13 lifting the weight 15 on same until its arm 13b reaches just beyond the vertical when the weight 15 will fall and assist the bell 1 to rise and in so doing complete the action of the link 1()a on the gas cock to insure a perfect complete movement.
On a release of the increased pressure in the main the weighted bell 1 will overcome the weighted bell crank 13 and move it over when the weight 15 on the bell crank 13 after passing the vertical line will act to further complete the movement, but in this return motion the link 10a operating the ratchet 6 has simply passed back to be ready for a fresh operation, the stop pawl 22 preventing any return movement of the gas cock 5 should there be any tendency for the link to operate such gas cock.
The gas in passing through the valve 5 to the burner passes down the passage 24: in the boxe into a passage Q5, and away by the pipe 26 to the burner or burners while the gas to the pilot is cut off, but when the gas to the burners is cut od the by-pass passage 27 is open and the gas to the pilot passes from inside the case 3 through the passages 30 and 27 and pipe 23.
29 is a cover which can readily be removed to enable the bell and mechanism to be inspected, but should it be desired that the pilot light be kept constant a screw 31 which passes into the passage 27 and normally closes a hole leading from the passage Copies of this patent may be obtained for ve cents each, by addressing the 27 into the c'ase 3, can be turned to open the hole in the appliance to allow gas to pass into the passage Q7 without interfering with the gas passing through the passage 30.
As will be understood, a diaphragm may be used instead of the bell, if desired.
What l do claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a gas-lighting apparatus, the combination, with a gas chamber and a movable pressure-operated element extending thereover; of a rod connected to said element for movement therewith; a block secured to said rod; a rotary valve within said chamber for controlling the discharge of gas therefrom; a weighted lever; and connections between said block and said lever and valve for operating the lever and the valve from said block.
2. In a gas-lighting apparatus, the combination, with a gas chamber and a movable pressure-operated element extending thereover; of a rod connected to said element for movement therewith; a block secured to said rod; a rotary valve within said chamber for controlling the discharge of gas therefrom; a ratchet secured to said valve; a weighted lever; a toothed link pivoted to said block and operatively engaged with said ratchet; and a separate link connection between said block and said lever.
