T0 (ZZZ whom it may concern Be it known that l, JAirns Lossnouorr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ellillitlt, in the county of Elkhart and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful improvements in l VheeL Mounts for Perambulators, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to means for mounting wheels on perambulators and has for its prin'iary object to provide an improved device of this nature for folding gocarts.
One of the objects of this invention is to 1 provide an improved construction, combinaticn and arrangement of parts in a device of this nature.
More specifically one of the objects is to provide an improved resilient mounting for the axles of folding go-carts.
Still another object is to provide improved means for reinforcing the axles.
Other and further objects will appear in the specification and be morespecifically pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, show ing an exemplifieation of the invention.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of a perambulator embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a section on the line 1IT1 Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section on the line T1THI, Fig. 2.
Referring more especially to the embodiment of the invention shown in the drawings, of which but on side of a folding gocart is illustrated, 1 represents a side bar, preferably made tubular, from which depends the tubular wheel supports. According to the present embodiment, said wheel supports are preferably swingingly mounted on the side member 1 by means of brackets 1, 5, through which is passed a longitudinal rod 6 parallel to the side member 1.
In order to provide a resilient mount for the axles of the vehicle, the wheel supports are of a tubular construction comprising complementary members 2, 13. These members may be of any desired length and of any desired configuration in cross section but in the present exemplification of the invention they are shown as being of a substantially diamond shape in cross section. tions will be deflected away from each other to form a tubular space into which an elastic or resilient member 9 is disposed and in the present form of the invention this resilient member is exemplified as a coil spring. In order to connect these complementary members for sliding movement, one with respect to the other, the longitudinal edges of one of the members are deflected or bent over the respective longitudinal edges of the other member as at 7 and these deflected ec ges 7 terminate short of each other so that the wheel axle 1 1 which is connected with the member 13 will slide freely in the space between the deflected edges of the member 2 when the member 13 moves with respect to the member 2.
A stop 8 preferably in the form of a lug or pin is provided adjacent the upper extremity of one of the members, preferably the member 2 so as to project inwardly into the space between the members 2 and 13 and is adapted to form an abutment or stop for the upper extremity of the resilient member 9. This member 9 preferably extends throughout the greater portion of the length of the support and its lower extremity abuts a stop 10 preferably in the form of a projection or lug carried by the inner face of the other member 13 adjacent the lower extremity thereof. This stop 10 may be secured in position in any desired or suitable manner, preferably by means of the inner reduced end 12 of the axle 14 which passes through the member 13 and the portion 11 of the stop 10 and the parts are preferably riveted together.
In order to limit the outward sliding movement of the member 13 with respect to the member 2 so that the parts will not become detached when the vehicle is raised from its support, a lug or projection 10 preferably in the form of a pin is provided on the member 2 and projects inwardly into the space between the members and within the path of the outward movement of the lug or stop 10, as shown more clearly in Fig. 2.
The wheels 15 are adapted to be rotatably mounted on each of the axles 14, said wheels being maintained in position thereon by means of a connection rod 16, which extends parallel to the side bar 1 and is provided with an aperture in each end adapting it Patented Jan. 5, 19 15.
to fit over the outer end of each axle 14:. This rod 16 is maintained in position preferably by being riveted in place, thus providing a lateral abutment for the outer ends of the hubs of the wheels 15.
Without being limited to the specific disclosure shown in the drawings what I claim 1. A vehicle provided with a tubular wheel support comprising complementary members of substantially uniform length slidably connected, the body portion of the members being deflected away from each other and the longitudinal edges of one member overlapping the longitudinal edges of the other member, resilient means interengaging between the members and a wheel axle connected with one of the members.
2. A vehicle provided with a tubular wheel support comprising complementary members constructed of sheet material, each being arched transversely, the open side of Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each,
