To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY D. GUE, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Methods of Separating Gases, of which the following is a specification.
My, invention relates to a certain new and improved method of separating gases of diflerent densities or specific gravities, such for instance as oxygen and nitrogen of the atmosphere. By my improved method I obtain a better separation of the gases than has heretofore been possible and at the same time operate cheaper and more rapidly.
My improved method consists in forming the mixed gases into. a vortex, revolving the vortex at a high velocity, supplying the mixed gases to the vortex at a high velocity and withdrawing the separated gases from the vortex.
In the accompanying drawing 1 have shown a central vertical section of one form of apparatus by means of which my method may be carried out.

Extending from one side of the curved portion 11 is a second outlet pipe 12.
13 designates a 14 mounted at its lower end in the bearing 15, and provided with a pulley 16 by means of which it may be driven at avery high speed to give the bowl a peripheral speed of approximately 1000 feet per second. The
bowl carried by a shaftbowl is shown as cone shaped but this is not essential and may be varied as desired.
The mixed gases are introduced into the bowl through the pipe 17, which is shownas extending through the chamber 7 and down close to the bottom of the bowl where it is provided with the outwardly extending branches 18 terminating in expansion nozzles 19, through which the mixed gases to be separated are delivered under such pressure in the pipe'17 as to give the gases as they are delivered from the nozzles, substantially the velocity of the peripheral speed of the bowl.
From the foregoing description of the constructionof the machine illustrated it will be seen that there will be a vortex of the gases formed within the bowl and that the mixed gases will be delivered to this vortex at a very high velocity and this velocity will be substantially maintained for the entire time the gases are in the vortex, due to the speed'of rotation of the bowl. The heavier gases will thus be separated from the lighter gases and the former taken away through the delivery pipe 12, while the latter pass through the pipe 8.
What ll claim as new and desire by Letters Patent is:
The method of separating gases of difierent densities which consists in forming the to secure mixed gases into a vortex, revolving said vortex at great velocity, supplying the mixture to the vortex at substantially the velocity of the vortex and removing the heavier gases from the peripheral portion of the vertex and the lighter gases from the central portion thereof.
