Specification of Letters Patent.
I Patented Jan. 5, ioia.
Application filed July 30, 1913. Serial No. 781,976.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, ANDREW M./STEWART, a citizen of the United States, residing at Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Tmprovements in Combination Sucker-Rod Sockets, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to slip-sockets for sucker-rods and its object is to provide slipsockets with slips constructed to catch a sucker-rod pm when a joint has become unscrewed, and also to catch the rod below the pin when the rod breaks, that is, its object is to provide slips which will catch rods or other articles of difl'erent diameters without requiring the slips to be exchanged for others of a different size. Referring to the accompanying drawing, Figure l is a longitudinal section showing a pin gripped by the lower'portion of the slips, and Fig. 2 is a similar section showing a rod of smaller diameter gripped by the upper portion of the slips.
On the drawings, 1 represents the bowl with the sub or pin member 2, and at its lower end with the set of internal slips 3, tapered downwardly to correspond with the taper or downward convergence of the inner wall of the bowl. The slipsare pressed downwardly by the spring 4 confined be tween the member 2 and the flanged washer 5 on the upper ends of the slips. I
The slips have their upper ends curved internally on arcs of one radius, and their lower portions curved internally on arcs of a larger radius, the two portions having their internal walls parallel and being connected by the upwardly and inwardly inclined guide or shoulder 6. Each portion is provided with transverse teeth, preferably pointing slightly upward.
It is seen that the lower portion of the slips are constructed to receive and grab the rod'or pin 7 of a'certain diameter while the upper portion can grab the rod 8 having a.
smaller diameter, the washer 5 permitting the rod to extend up into the spring 4. By my improved slip-socket the same set of slips will catch a sucker-rod pin when it unscrews, or will catch a smaller rod when it breaks Of course, the lower portion of the slips may catch rods havingthe proper diameters. By screwing out the sub 2, the spring, the washer, and the slips may be removed so that slips of a dillerent size or character may be inserted in the bowl.
I claim In a slip-socket, a setof slips having one M. N. TABER, C. S. WRIGHT.
