nncourmno ATTACHMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan, 5, i915,
Original application filed April 29, 1911, Serial No. 624,176. Divided and this application filed August 26,
I 1914. Serial No.858,689.
To all whom it may concern: 1
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM J. KNOX,
a citizenof the United States, residing at Dubois, in the county of :Clearfield and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Uncoupling Attachments, ing is a specification.
he invention relates to uncoupling attachments for use with the automatic cou plers employed on railway cars.
The primary objects of the invention are; to produce an uncoupling device which Will allow for all bufling and draft move ments, lateral movements and vertical movements of the draw head; to produce an uncoupling mechanism which is capable of operation as closely as possible to the body of the car and in which all parts are at tached to the car; the provision of an improved positive form of flexible connection wherein the use of chains, looselinks and similar devices are avoided; the provision of an uncoupling rigging capable of use with the brackets now employed with old and. unsatisfactory forms of rigging; the provision of a release rigging which may be formed of common bar. iron or 'steel so simply manufactured and assembled that highly skilled labor is not required; and t e provision of apparatus in which the rigging may be detached from the coupler without detaching the brackets'carrying the rigging.
A further object of my invention is to provide a release rigging so constructed and mounted, that incase of disconnection between any of the parts, each part will remain attached to the sists of the parts or combination of parts as will be hereinafter pointed out.
In the drawing Figure view of a release rigging embodying my invention, shown attached to a car, the car being in section. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same.
The reference numeral-1 designates a portion of a car, 2 the draw head and 3 coupler pin operating in the draw head and provided with an eye through which the lift lever may freely pass as will hereinafter be fully polnted out.
of which the follow- 7 car; and with these and other objects in view my invention conto the hand operating 1 is a top plan The attaching brackets 4 and 5 are securely fixed directly to the car in any suitable manner and are each provided with an eye or opening in which the hand operated lever 6 is revolubly mounted, said lever being provided with a depending crank arm at its outer end and with a lifting arm 8 extending laterally therefrom which arm is bent downward as at 9 and thence outward" to receive upon said outwardly extending portion the laterally extending armof the lifting link or lever where it is retained. The lifting link or lever comprising a rela tively long portion 10 and a relatively short portion 12 at right angles to each other is connected directly to the car by means of a bracket 11 permanently secured to the car which prevents the loss of the lifting lever, said bracket having an eye through whichthe relativel short depending portion 12 12 of the lifting link or lever extends, and is secured therein by any suitable means, such for instance as a cotter pin 13; the relative diameter of the opening in the bracket 11 and the diameter of the short depending portion 12 being such that the arm 12 has universal lay thereby. The bracket 11 permits the li ting lever to swing to and from the car with the draw head in bufiin and draft during which movement-the lifting lever travels upon the lifting arm 8.
he inner end of the lifting link. 10 is passed through the eye of the pin 3 and the pin may slide thereon to accommodate the lateral movements of the draw head,
. the extreme inner end being bent to one sidev and chains.
cation filed 1 This is a division of my appli April 29, 1911, Serial No. 624,176.
What I claim is:
1. In an uncoupling device for car couver and provided with a lifting arm extending outwardly beneath the relatively longer portion of the pin lever, the lifting arm 00- operating with the pin lever for the purpose described.
2. In an uncouplin mechanism for car couplers, the combination with a pin lifting lever having .a relatively long portion and a relatively short portion at right angles to each other, a device for loosely pivotally connecting the free end of the short portion to the car, of a rotatable operating lever attached to the end of a car and provided at its inner end with a lifting arm extending outwardly and beneath the long portion of the pin lever, and cooperating with the pin lever for the purpose set forth.
3. In an uncoupling device for car .couplers, the combination with a pin lifting lever having a relatively long portion and a relatively short portion at right angles to each other, said short portion having a depending portion having a direct flexible connection with a car, of a rotatable operating lever attached to the end of a car with its inner end extending beyond the point of attachment of the pin lifting lever and provided with a lifting arm extending outwardly beneath the relatively longer portion of the pin lever, and cooperating with the pin lever for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of twowitnesses.
WILLIAM J. KNOX.
