To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARTIN J. KELLY, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Britain, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Water-- Closet-Controlling Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in water closet controlling devices and the obi jectof my improvement is to provide in combination with a. water closet seat and water supply tank therefore means for shutting oii the water and for permitt ng the tank to discharge the water therein, and effecting the usual fiushingwhile being so discharged, immediately upon release of the seat after use and for closing the discharge 7 outlet of the tankand turningon thewater so as to permit the tank to iill, suo ect to the control of the usual controlling devices provided in the tank when the seat is again broughtinto use. 1 1 is the water tank of usual. form, connected with the bowl 10 by means of the discharge connection 15, and connected to the water supply system by means of the water supply pipe 16.
The tank 1 1 is provided with the usual controlling mechanism, including a ball cock, and which are operated by tripping mechanism and the tripping of which is effected by a downward pull on one arm of a lever 17. The operations eiiected by such pull on the lever 17 comprise opening the discharge from the tank to the bowl so as to effect the usual flushing thereof as desired; opening the water supply inlet to permit water to flow into the tank; closing the disthe upper end of charge from the tank to the bowl, per1nitting the tank to fill; and finally closing the water supply to the tank when the latter is filled to the desired depth,'and subject to the control of the ball cock. I provide an additional valve or cock'18 in the water supply pipe 16 and provide means for simultaneously operating the said cock 18 and the lever17. One method of doing this is shown in the drawing and the mechanism therefore comprises a controlling lever 19 which is connected to the cock l8 and also to the lever 17 and which is connected atits front end to a vertically reciprocating member 20,
which member 20 is maintained in contact with the lower side of the seat 11 by means oia spring 21. As shown i the cock 18 has a "l" handle-and the controlling lever 19 is connected to the arms of the same at its rear end by means of pins 22.
The connection between the controlling lever 19 and the tripping lever 17 consists of a cable or cord 23 which has one end connected to the lever 17 and the other end connected to the controllinglever 19 at some point as shown at 2 1 suiliciently re mote from the water cook 18 to give the necessary movement, and intermediate to the said ends may pass over a guide pulley 25that is preferably positioned to efi'ect a substantially vertical pull on the tripping lever 17. The 'front end of the controlling lever 19 is pivotally connected to the reci} rocating member 20 by means of a pin 26. The seat 11 overhangs the bowl 10 a little and the upper end of the reciprocating member 20 engages with the overhanging portion ofthe seat 1.1. The said upper end may be capped with a contact member 27. The reciprocating member 20 is part of a standard that is set up on the floor adjacent the bowl 10 suitably to engage with the seat 29 and the lower end of the reciprocating member 20. As shown the reciprocating member is also tubular, and a washer 31 is interposed between the lower end thereof and the spring 21.
I prefer to use a self closing spring cock for the cock 18. The action of this spring is cooperative with that of the spring 21, and it is obvious that two springs are not necessary and that one spring of suiiicient strength can be used in lieu of two, and either of the two springs can be dispensed with. In the "normal position, as shown in' Fig. 1, the
" springs cooperate to hold the controlling lever 19 in the elevated position, which cortrolling lever 19 is brought to its lowermost position, as shown in Fig. 2. In this position of the mechanism the water supply cock 18 is in the open position and the cable 28 is slack, wherefore the tripping lever 17 is'free-to be raised to its uppermost position by the controlling mechanism in the tank and which latter permits the tankto befilled. Such filling will be properly eifected, andsubstantially in an ordinary mannerprovided the seat 11 is maintained in the position for use for a suflieient length of time.
My mechanism as described dispenses with the necessity of. the push button 32 thatis ordinarily used for operating thetripping lever 17, and which is positioned on the front of the tank and connected to the said trippinglever 17 by means of a rod 33, and the same may be retained or not as desired.
It is understood that certain changes in details may be made to meet special conditions without avoiding the spirit and scope of my invention. For instance, in case of having afloor of concrete, it may be preferred to support the standard by a bracket Copies of this patentiiiay be obtained for from the wall, and other changes of a minor character may be made as mentioned.
It will be noted, as described, that where my invention is-in use the water supply to the water tank is turned on only when the seat is in use; that the bowl is automatically flushed immediately upon release of the seat; and that when the seat is not in use the water tank is empty. The result of this combination is a saving of water by avoiding the waste that follows from leakage from the water tank to the bowl, which is a more or less common occurrence; by insur ing a sanitary condition of the bowl; furthermore because the water tank is normally empty, the danger of having the water therein freeze during cold weather is entirely obviated.
The means that I have devised to attain the particular results mentioned are particularly adapted to use with modern openwork plumbing, in which the supply pipe 16 is in a vertical position, immediately at the rear of the bowl. This arrangement permits the water supply cook 18 to be positioned in the said pipe 16 suitably to receive and support the rear end of the controlling lever 19. The said rear end of the controlling lever 19 is thus pivotally supported by the moving or rotating member of the cook 18, being connected thereto by means of the pins 22.
I claim as my invention In combination, a water closet bowl having a hinged'seat, a tank having a tripping lever, a supply pipe connected to the said tank, a cock controlling the supply pipe, and a spring operated controlling lever having the body portion connected to the said tripping lever, and having one end connected to the said seat, the said cock being 0peratively connected to the other end of the said controlling lever and serving as a fulcrum support therefor, and the said supply pipe being in a vertical position adjacent the said bowl, and serving as a support for the said cock and for the said other end of the lever connected thereto.
