meager.
Application filed April 3, 1913.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ISAAC BAUER, a citizen of the nited States, residing at Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Teapots, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in tea pots and the object of my improvement is to provide a tea pot with a tea ball and supporting means therefor that are simple and reliable in use.
ln the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a central vertical section of my improved tea pot. Fig. 2 is a similar view on an enlarged scale of the upper part of the same, and with the tea ball in elevated position. Fig. 3 is a similar view of the same with the lever in an intermediate position. Fig. l is a fragmentary view corresponding to Fig. 2 of a modification of the cover. Fig. 5 is a similar view of the same, with the parts in the intermediate position shown in Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is a similar view of the top of the stem and the end piece engaged therewith.
My tea pot comprises a body 10 having a circular opening 11 at the top, and a cover 12. The cover 12 has a dome-shaped top portion 13, a cylindrical bottom portion 14- fltting the opening 11, and a flange 15 at the junction of the said top portion 13 and bottom portion 1/1 which overhangs the body portion 10. The dome-shaped top portion 13 is provided at the apex with an upwardly directed tubular stem 16 on which is mounted a knob 17, which latter may be of wood. rlhe stem 16 may be of appreciable thickness, in which case the upper end 21 is finished off conical so as to provide a sharp bearing edge 18 at the extreme upper end and which corresponds to the upper end of the axial bore 19. The upper wall 20 of the knob 17 is preferably finished off conical and approximately in continuation of the conical upper end of the stem 16.
The tea ball 31 is as usual made of two parts of foraminous material and the upper part is shaped to conform to and to lit within the interior of the dome shaped portion 13 of the cover. A chain 22 is connected by the lower end to the upper end of the tea ball 31 and is of suflicient length to extend through the stem 16 and have the upper end 23 project above the same. The
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan.. 5, 19115.. Serial No. 758,702.
said upper end 23 is connected to the inner end 26 of a leverl 25.
At the outer end 27 of the lever 25 there is connected one end of a chain 28 and to the other end of which is attached an end piece 29 that serves as a combined finger piece and oounterweight.
When the tea ball 31 is dropped within the body portion 10 the end piece 29 rests on the knob 17 and supports the same through the medium of the chain 23, lever 25, and chain 22.
l/Vhen it is desired to bring the tea ball 31 to the elevated position within the domeshaped portion 13 the end piece 29 is grasped and the tea ball is lifted to the position desired. Then a side-wise movement is given to the end piece 29 and the hold on the Same is released, so that the same is brought to the pendent position as shown in Fig. 2. In this position and in the intermediate position shown in Fig. 3 the portion of the lever adjacent the pivotally connected end 26 is brought into engagement with the conical bearing` edge 18 of the stem 16, which serves as a fulcrum therefor. rlhe end piece 29, which has appreciable weight, serves as the power to over-balance the load consisting of the tea ball 31 and to maintain the same in the elevated position.
In the modification shown in Fig. 4: the stem 16a consists of a thin tube, the upper end 18a of which projects slightly above the knob 17a.
The end piece 29 as stated is of appreciable weight and comprises a body portion 30 of metal and may be provided with a finger piece proper 31 of wood and which may be secured thereto in any convenient manner.
The exposed end 33 of the body portion 30 is provided with an axially extending lug 32 to which the chain 28 is attached. The lug 32 is a fit for the end of the stem 16 or 16a. I prefer to have the portion of the wall of the said exposed end 33 surrounding the lug 32 which is the bottom wall shown in Fig. 6, recessed as shown at 34 so that the outer edge 35 will engage with the upper end of the knob 17 or 17a and serve as a support for the end piece 29 and the parts connected thereto and will house in the recess 34: the upper bearing edge 18 or 18a of the stem 16 or 16a.
The body portion of the pot may be made of enameled ware or aluminum or other suitable material and the cover and the tea ball are preferably made of aluminum.
The fact that the bearing edge thatserves as a fulerum for the lever is close to the point of pivotal connection of the tea ballr permits of over-balancing the Weight of the tea ball With a relatively short lever and small Weight.
As shown, the lever 25 is made in the form of a flat bar. When the same is connected to the tea ball by means ofy the flexible connection, such as isrv provided by the chain 22, the said' lever may engage with the fnlerurn either edgewise, as lshown inz the drawing, or tlativise, according to the position it is in When released; and in either position will operate to support the tea ball, even with a small counter-Weight 29 as in both eases, ovvinggto the fact that thek fulorum is appreoiably elevated relatively to-the adjacent parts, an extremely short lever arm is provided on the side of the ltea balli,
h claim` as invention In combination in a tea pot, a tea ball, a pot body, a cover therefor, a knob on said ing edge that is positively positioned above the upper end of the said knob, a supporting, device for the said tea ball, connected thereto by one end, and passing through the said lining, a combined counterweight and linger piece connected to the other end of the said supporting device, and the said supporting device eomprising.,a length of chain at each of the said ends and a lever interposed between the said lengths of chain, whereby lifting the Said linger piece will serve to elevate the said lever and tea ball and swingingy the said linger piece to one Side relatively'to the said knob after being so lifted and releasing the same will permit the said lever toengage With the said bearing edge.
