To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SAMUEL J. SrLL, a citizen of the United States, and a res1dent i of Buffalo, county of Erie, and State ofNew York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Disconnecting the Sections of Hose-Forming Mandrels, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention seeks to provide a simple and effective construction by which the sections of hose-forming mandrels may. be
readily disconnected, and consistsin the fea, tures of improvement hereinafter set forth,
illustrated in its preferred form intheaccompanyingv drawings, and more particularly pointed out in. the appended claims.
In the drawings,-Figure 1 is aplan view of the improved machine; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section; and Fig. 3 is a face view of one of the chuck heads.
. The improved. machine comprises a bed plate 1 mounted at its ends upon suitable supporting legs 2. In the construction shown, the machine is driven from an electric motor 3, which is mounted on one end of the bed plate, and the shafts of which is provided with a drive pinion 5. Thepinion 5 meshes with a gear 6 upon oneend of a short shaft 7 and which shaft is journaled in the outer end portion of the U-shaped bracket 8 which is secured to the bed plate. journaled inthe; other portion of the bracket 8 and is ar-- A second short shaft 9 is ranged in line with the shaft 7. The shafts 7 and 9 are adapted to be connected and disconnected by a clutch 10 of any suitable construction. In the construction shown the clutch shoes are operated by a sliding cone 11 on the shaft 9, which acts upon a pair of arms 11'. The cone is shifted by a hand lever 12, which is pivoted to a stud 13 on the bracket 8 and is provided with a yokeshapcd portion extending about the clutch bed plate. The shaft 18 is longitudinally movable through the bearing 17, but is held against rotation therein, preferably by means of a key 19. This shaft is shifted by a lever 20, which is connected by a pivot bolt 21 to a part 22 extending outwardly from the bearing 17. The lever is provided with a yokeshaped portion which extends over the outer end of the shaft 18 and over a grooved collar or sleeve 23 mounted on the shaft. Pins 24 on the yoke portion of the lever engage the grooved collar, so that the shaft may be shifted longitudinally by the lever. v
. The inner ends of the shafts 9 and 18 are provided with chuck heads 25 and 26, and these heads are provided with axial recesses 27 on their inner faces. The recesses 27 are provided with flattened side walls which are arranged to engage the correspondingly shaped end portions of the sections of a hose-forming mandrel. This mandrel com-1 prisesamain body 28 having a slightly en- 7 larged portion 29 at one end, witha terminal collar 30 surrounding the enlarged portion. At its opposite end, the mandrel is provided with a screw-threaded stem 31 of reduced diameter. A sleeve 32 .is threaded on the stem into engagement with the end ofthe main portion of the mandrel. This sleeve corresponds in size to the enlarged portion 29 of the mandrel and has a terminal collar 33 corresponding to the collar 30. nTh'eicollars 30 and 33 are provided with flattened faces at their end portions and are adapted to fit within the recesses 27 of the chuck heads 25 and 26. v
This mandrelis employed for forming and vulcanizing hose sections having enlarged ends, and such as are used in railway air-brake systems. As indicated in the drawings, the enlarged ends of the hose section 34 extend over the portion 29 of the mandrel and the sleeve 32, and abut against the terminal collars 30 and 33. After the hoseis completed, the mandrel, with the hose thereon, is placed in position between the chuck heads 25 and 26, with the flattened end fportions thereof extending within the correspondingly shaped recesses 27 of the chuck heads. The mandrel is securely held.

that the mandrel is securely held between 31, and as it is unscrewed, the chuck head 26 is moved outwardly against the pressure of the spring The sections of the mandrel are thus readily, easlly and rapldly disconnected to permit the removal of the hose section without injury thereto.
While the primary object of the invention is the disconnecting of the mandrel sections to permit the removal. of the finished hose, the machine is adapted for other purposes, such as wrapping the mandrel with the hose thereon in cloths preparatory to the vulcaniizing operation. The machine may be readily adapted to this operation by permitting the rotation of the longitudinally movable shaft 18. v

I claim as my invention: I
1. In a machine of the class described, the combination with a bed plate having stand- 1 ards thereon, of a revoluble shaft journaled on one of said standards, clutch-controlled drive mechanism for said shaft, a longitudinally movable shaft mounted in the other Copies of this patent may be obtained for of said standards, a spring for pressing said latter shaft inwardly, a. collar on the outer end of said second shaft, and a hand lever engaging said collar for shifting said shaft against the tension of said spring, said shafts having chuck heads on their inner ends provided with recesses for engaging the squared ends of a mandrel, substantially as described.
2. In a machine of the class described, the combination with a bed plate having standards thereon, of a revoluble shaft journaled on one of said standards, clutch-controlled drive mechanism for said shaft, a longitudinally movable shaft mounted in the other of said standards and held against rotation therein, a collar on said second shaft, a hand lever engaging said collar for shifting said longitudinally movable shaft, and chuck heads on the inner ends of said shafts having axial recesses for engaging the squared ends of a mandrel, substantially as described.
In a machine of the class described, the combination with a bed plate having standards thereon, of a revoluble shaft ournaled on one of said standards, clutch-controlled drive mechanism for said shaft, a longitudinally movable shaft mounted in the other of said standards and keyed thereto, a spring for pressing said latter shaft inwardly, and a hand lever for shifting said longitudinally movable shaft against the tension of said spring, said shafts having chuck heads on their inner ends provided with axial recesses for engaging the squared ends of a mandrel, substantially as described.
