R. E. JACKSON 85 P. E. BELL SPARK ARBESTER. APPLICATION IIL ED JAN. 19, 1914 Patented Jan. 5., 1915.
Serial Number 7 61,7 96;
: STATES P TENT oFFIoE.
' Beware-Jackson, OF VICTORIA, annrrtenkn BELL, OF-NORFOLK, VIRGINIA.
Toallwhom-zt'mayconcern:
Be it known that WB,ROBER'D Jackson and F RANKE. BELL, citizens of the United States, residing at Victoria, in thecounty of Virginia, have invented new and useful Im provements in Spark-Arresters', of whichthe" follow-ingis'a specification. V
Our, presentin'vention pertains to spark arresters, and consistskin the-peculiar and advantageous spark arr-ester; herein, de-
scribed and claimed, designed more partied larly as an improvement upon the spark arrester constituting the subject of our contemporary application, filed April 17, 1913,
In the drawings, accompanying and form I -ing part ofthis specification: Figure l-is a 2'5 corresponding arts in bothviews ofthe view showing the smoke box and fire box of a locomotive boiler. with our improvement properly applied. Fig. 2 is a transverse's'ection taken in the plane indicatedby the line 2c-2ofFig. 1. Y
fJSiniilar numerals of reference designate drawings.
The locomotive'boiler 1 is provided with flues 1", a smoke box 2 from which rises an uptake3, and a fire-box 4. Theseparts'may' be and preferably are of the ordinary well known construction. We' also employ, by preference, the ordinary exhaust pipe 5,
alined with the uptake 3, and arranged conventionally or otherwise in communication 'with the exhaust. cavitiesinfthe saddles of the piston cylinders of the locomotive,
Arranged in the lower portion of the pipe 5 is the bell-shaped or flaring mouth 6 of an auxiliary conduit 7 for exhaust "steam,
which conduit extends through the wall of and forwardly from the pipe 5, as shown.
The smoke box 2 is 'divided into compartments, one of which is in full and free communication with the flues 1", and the other in full and free communication with the uptake 3. through the medium of a diaphragm that comprises a rear. imperforate portion 8 through which the pipe 5 extends, and a forward foraminous portion 9; said forami-.
nous portion being inclined downwardly and rearwardly as illustrated. The lower and forward portion of the imperforate The said division is effected plate 8 is preferably extended below the lower and rear end of the 'foraminous porti0n 9 as shown. 7 v
- Extending rearwardlyand downwardly from the forward wall of the smoke box 2 is a chute 10'-'i. 6., a Wall adapted to receive cinders that drop from the screen 9,'and
shed said cinders in the lower forward portion of the smoke box; Below the lower and rear edge of the chute or wall l0is the flaredmouth 11 of a'conduit 12, which flared Patented Jan. 5, 1915; nrr i ation'mmuaiuarwe,1914. Serial no. 813,023. I
Above'the chute or wall 10,.the conduit 12 I a is connected with two conduits 13, and these dr wnv or forced therethrough. The valves 14: in the pipes 13 do not interfere in any measure with the passage of products of combustion toward the fire-box, but they preclude passagev of ases, etc., in the opposite directionunder conditions.
As will be readily observed, the valves of I the air-induction conduits 15 may be opened when it is desired to supply atmospheric air to the conduits 13 with a view to supporting combustion in the fire-box.
Q The conduits 13 may be led into the fire- I I box in any approved manner, and at any desired points without involving departure. from the scope of our invention. We pro-- fer, however, to connect each conduit 13 with the fire-box in the manner shown in Fig. 1that is by czirrying the conduit through a sleeve 16 in the water leg of the boiler, and connecting it to a refractory conduit section 17 which, in turn, communicates with a flared mouth 18 in the front wall '19 of the fire-box 4; said mouth 18 being adapted to -spread the hot gases and other products of combustion above thefire in the firebox. 1
An auxiliary valved blower 20 leads from a suitable point in-the boiler to the "flared mouth 11 of the conduit 12, where it has a discharge as shown. By opening the valve 21 in the conduit 20 the engineer in his cab is enabled to send a jet of steam into the mouth 11, and inthat way create suction in said mouth and clear the smoke box of collected smoke when the engine is drifting and there 'is n discharge of exhaust steam through the pipe 5 and the conduit 7 In the practical operation of our improvement, and when the valve 21 in the conduit-20 is closed, the exhaust steam passing through the pipe 5 will create :rfpartial large measure to the partial-vacuum created a in the conduit 12 by' the discharge therein of exhaust steam from the conduit 7, since thereby a portion of the smoke and heated air and gases, together with sparks and cinders, Will be forced through the conduits 12 and'13 and back to the fire-box.
It will vbe noted here that in entering the fire-box through the conduit-section 17, the returned products of combustion are heated, and hence adapted to promote combustion in the fire-box.
Having described our invention, What We claim and desire to secure by LettersQPatent, is;
1. The combination in a locomotive, of a boiler having a Water leg, a fire-box and a smoke-box, said fire-box having a rearwardly-direc'ted discharge conduit in the upper portion of its frontfwall, a conduit section of refractory material extending between the Water leg and the front wall of the fire-box and communicatingv with said discharge conduit, and a conduit for prod-' ucts of combustion extending from the smoke-box tosaid conduit section.
2. The combination in a-locomotive, of a fire-box, a smoke box, a foraminous'diaphragm arranged in the upper forward portion of the smoke box, a rearwardly and downwardly inclined chute disposed in the smoke box below said diaphragm and extending from the front wall of the'smoke box, aconduit for products of combustion extending betweenthe. fire-box and the smoke box and having arearWardly-directed flared mouth disposed in thelatter and under the said chute, and means for discharging steam forwardly into said month.
In testimony whereof We have hereunto witnesses.
I ROBERT E. JACKSON.
