ROOFING IMPLEMENT.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JEREMIAH N. FARn- HAM, a citizen of the United States, and a resldent of Rockland, in the county of Knox and State of Maine, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Roofing Implements, of whichthe following is a specification.

My present invention relates to roofing implements, and, is, more particularly, an improvement upon the roofing implement described and claimed in my application #692,839 which was filed in the Patent Office April 24, 1912, the objects of my present improvement being to provide a more convenient and effective implement, whereby the free edge of a roofing sheet may be temporarily held above the surface of the roof and space at the same time provided for the introduction of the under-lapped edge of the next successive roofing sheet, the implement being then removable whereby it may be used any number of times, and being simple and inexpensive in its structure. In the accompanying drawing which illustrates my improved implement Figure 1 is a transverse sectional view through a roof illustrating the practical application of my present improvement; Fig. 2 is a sectional view through aroofing sheet held within the implement, the latter being shown in front elevation, and Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the implement removed.

Referring now to these figures my improved roofing implement is formed of a strip of sheet metal or other suitable material, having an upright portion or shank A, the lower portion of which is tapered to a point at a, the tapering side edges being preferably beveled, whereby the resulting point will be sharp to the extent that it may be thrust into roof boards without necessity for the use of other tools. The upper portion of the strip from which the implement is formed is bent angularly with respect to the body or shank A, forming a lateral extension A, the extremity of which is bent back thereon and overlies the same in order to form a clasping portion A this clasping portion and the lateral extension A being provided with substantially central alined apertures (1. Thus with this implement as described it is possible for one engaged in the laying of a roof to begin at Specification of Letters Patent.

the top of the slope, or at one side, if the roofing strips are to be run up and down. In the former case the first strip indicated at B in Fig. 1 is permanently fastened along its top edge and a line marked off on the roofing boards along its lower edge, this latter edge being still free is then lifted and my improved implements are then used at spaced intervals along such edge, the lower points a of the implements being pressed into the roof boards at a distance above the marked line, dependent upon the lap desired. The free edge of the roofing strip is received in the space between the lateral extension A and the clasping piece A the latter being capable of engagement with roofing strips which are sanded or coated, while with smooth roofing material a nail or like member indicated at C may be thrust through the alined openings a before mentioned in order to prevent displacement of the roofing sheet, the body or shank A of the implement upstanding for the purpose of holding the free edge of the roofing strip raised above the roof boards. The next strip indicated at B may then be placed in position with its adjacent edge against the several implements and when thus placed its edge is tacked at spaced points in order to keep it in place while being cemented. The several implements may then be readily removed and the lower free edge of the first strip B permanently fastened, the implements being retained for future use.

I claim 1. An implement for use in laying sheets of roofing material consisting of a member having its body pointed at one end to provide a relatively sharp apex whereby it may be pressed into a roof without the use of additional tools, said member being provided at its opposite end with a laterally projecting portion, the extremity of which is bent back thereon in spaced relation, said laterally projecting portion and its bent extremity being provided with alined apertures and being formed of a strip of sheet metal of substantial width whereby to constitute a broad bearing surface for a roofing sheet.
