Fenway, of Bai'- timore, in the county of Baitimore and State of Maryland, have invented a new andiniproved Eire-EscapeV Ladder; and I dol hereby` declare theV following to be a full, clear, and exact descriptionof the same, reference being had to the aiecernpanying-treatingl making a part of this specification', in which-.-

My invention relates to improvements in that class of fire-escapes wherein curved and jointed pieces are employed to form the sides vof the, ladder, `which .is attached to and .wound upon a` drum located on oneef the upper floors of a building.

My improvementpertains to the jointed ladder, in combinationwith the drum, which `is provided-with an offset, whereby certain advantages are attained,as

Referring to the drawingt `afisa'suitable frame intended to be ixed to the upper floor of.a=-bnilding, just inside one of the win-I dows of the same. t

' cl is Aa spur-gear mounted in the frame a, connecting with the cog'ged disk c, and provided with a crank, by means of which'- disk, gearan'd crank, the drum receives rotation.

A shoulder, f, lis formed transversely-of the perimeter of the drum b, next .to whichA shoulder one end of the latter is jointed to the exterior of the drum.

The ladder is composed of sections, each section 'consisting of a pair of curved side`pieces,g, which are connected by c1'ossties, h, the pieces g being jointed together .at their extremities so as to formtxo con;

tinuous chains.

The pecesg are' curved fortwo reasons, to wit:

lrst, that lthey may fit the perimeter of the drum when wound upon it, and that each coil may alsodit the one within it; and, second, that the crosspieces at the centralparts of the sections may stand out from the wall when the ladder is hung perpendicularly from a window,'-and thus affords room for the feet of ythose who have to go up or down the ladder'.

The ladder is easily wound upon` the drum, and when thus disposed of is held securely by side-danger. that `extend outward from the periphery of the drum.

When required for use, the ladder may be readily unwound and dropped from the window.

The extreme section is providedwith hooks, i, by which to fasten the ladder .to any point on the ground.
