vLetters Patent No. 112,257, dated February'28, 1871.
i IMPRovEMENTiIN HEAD-BLOCKS FOR sAw-MILLs.
` The Schedule referred to in thune klettern Patent and making parl: of the same.
Be itkuown that I, `WILLIAM A. L. Kinn, of Hamilton, in the county of Butler and State of Ohio, have invented certain Improvements in` Head-Blocks for Saw-Mills', and I do hereby declare that`the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the annexed drawing making part of this specification, 'iii which- Figure 1 is a' perspective view of a head-block -einbodying my improvement-s,
'.lligure 2 is a bottoniy view of the sliding adjustable vknee, detached from the slide.
I iigure 3 is a transverse section of the slide to which the adjustable knee is secured.
Figure 4 is a transverse section of the horizontal part of the knee.
Figure 5 is a perspective view ofthe l.fuiciliary dog, detached.
l Figure 6 is a transverse vertical section of the headblck shown 4iu fig.`1;
Figure? is a perspective view of the head-block,
4seen from the sidefopposite to-tha't shown in iig 1, to
bring into view the'pushing-bar and devices acting in connection therewith. The same letters are used` in all the figures in the designationof identical parts.
mhe invention consists in the employment of a f b ar of metal, which is placed `upon the upper surface o'f the horizontal position of the knee of the head- 'block, such surfaces being serrated or notched to rc-v ceive'a projection upon the bar,.tlie forward-endet' which `passes through-a groove or slot in the knee, so
that when a log is placed upon the head-block the bai' maybe pushed through such slot until it reaches' the surface of thelower portion of the lng', and thus, as the knee ismoved forward, prevent the tendency to roll such dog, the bai' being heldiin its advanced position by a cani `or eccentric.
The last part'of this invention consistsiu arraugf 4 ling the knee adjustably upon the slde -of vthe head`V block, in suclna manner that it may be slid Yback upon `the slide when the lattcrhas been moved away'figoi'n the saw through its entire range, thus increasing the distance between thc saw and the.' kneeof the headblock and the capacity of .they latter for feeding up logs oi' large diameter.
'.lhe frame or carriage A of" the head-block is constructed in the ordinary' manner, with a longitudinal slot in its. upper face, the edges of `which forni ways foi" the slide B.
The latter is, in practice, constructed with a rack upon its under side, so that it may be movcd'by a pinion -in the ordinary nizuiiier. 'This rack is not 'showin 4'lhis slide usually terminates at its forward end in the knee, which" bears against the log.
, The knee O in this head-block does not form a constituent part of the' slide B, but is arranged upon the latter adjustably.
'Forthis purpose the upperside'of the slide vhas a longitudinal slot, l), beginning v'at the rear end butl 'terminating some distance from the 'forward end, and `having the form of'an inverted as showiniii which -slot a rib, c, of the horizoutalgpart Grof the knee is ,fitted to maintain the knee in-liu'e 'with the slide, to which-it may he secured at any required pointV by a bolt, C2.. Q
The head of the latter, passing hito the larger part of theslot b, will draw theki'iee-iirmly to the slide on tightening the nut c upon its ,upper screw-threzuicd end and bearing upon a boss on the knee. `Drefcrs to a sliding bai, which passes through the slot 1 in the vertical portion-of the knee, its-enter cnd-v heing provided with a projection adapted to. engage the teeth formed upon one side ofthe horizontal part C* of the knee, as shown in Iig. 7, and with afhzuidle by which to move it in and out.
.D' refersV to an eccentric or cam, which is vpvoted to the knee, and is Iso arranged with 'reference to the sliding bar that when the handle d, by which it is o perated, is borne down, the full pai-tof the''eccentric will b e made to press upon vthe bai and cause the projectioniupon its rear end to enter one of the notches in the knee, and thus it will be heldin any position in which it may bev desirable to place it.
The office of said sliding bar is to press against the lower portion of thelog'after it has been placed upon the head-block, so that, as it is pushed' forward to- -wai'd the saw, all tendency to turn orroll the log may be avoided, in order that when a vertical section has been formed upon such log by the sawvthe saine- Aoied to the short arm of lever E, and 4so arranged as Y to pass through a slot formed in the knee O at an angle of one hundred and twenty degrees, inoie or less, tothe vertical face thereof;V This dog is straight in its general-outline, except where it enters the lever lf) :uid upon its outer or lower end, whichis sharpened so as to .enable it to enter'the t'niber with facility, its oiiice being to enter and hold any thin pieces ot'- lumber, which it is diflicult, if not impossible, to hohl wit-li the usual'fastenings.
Having thus described iny invent-ion,
posed of the parts B and C, arranged in the manner and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof Iv have signed my name to this specification iu the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
