Application filed August 2B, 1910. Serial No. 579,554.
' to the accompanying drawings. f
The invention relates to car roofs of the type in which metallic roofing sheets are employed, said sheets being provided .with down-turned iianges at the eaves, and the invention consists in the construction as hereinafter set forth.
' In the draWings,-Figure. 1 is a cross section through a. portion of the car roof; Fig.'
rust and the latter to rot. The present invention is designed to overcome this defect by spacing the iiange from the outer surface of the fascia so as to provide an air chan.- nel fordrying any moisture.
As shown, A is the side plate of the car, B is the fascia and C is the roong plate having a depending 'flange D.
E isa bolt or other securing device for fastening the flange l) to the fascia.' The flange D is spaced from the fascia throughout vthe greater part of its extent and this is preferably accomplished by embossing portions to form inwardly projecting bear ings F that contact with the fascia. This also forms on the outer face of the sheet a recess Gr to receive the head H of the bolt.
The sheet constructed as described when secured in position '.vill provide a narrow channel or air space between the inner face of the metal and the outer face ofthe Wood in all portions excepting Vthe bearings F. These being limited in extent-and surrounded by the air space will have any 4collecting moisture eliminated.
What-I claim as my invention is:
1. 1n a car roof, the combination with the fascia, of a metallic roofing sheet havingV a depending ange overlapping said fascia, said flangebeing inwardly embossed to form a bearing against Athe fascia, said bearing spacing the body of the Harige from contact with the fascia and forming a. vertically` openair space. ,y
2. In a car roof, the combination with the fascia, of .a metallic rooiingplate haw ing a depending' flange overlapping said fascia, said flange being inwardly embossed to form a bearinglug separatin the body of the flange from the fascia to orm a Ver tically open air space, and a securing bolt passing through said inwardly embossed portion.
3. In a car roof thej combination with the car side, of ametallic rooting sheet having a depending flange adjacent to said side, said flange beingprovided with means for holding the'greater portion of said flange out of contact with said car side.
et. In a. car roof, the combination withw the car side, of a metallic reeling sheet hav ing a depending flange adjacent to said side, saidflangtA being provided with means for holding the greater portion` oi'said iiange out of contact With said car side to form a,
'vertically open air space, and securing means for said liange engaging said spacing' means. A
