Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented nenas, 1914.
Application led September 10, 1913. Serial No. 789,169.
' tion thereof.
My invention relates more particularly to the lavatories usually located in the smokfor its object to increase the seating capacity of these compartments and at the same time give the maximum lavatory facilities. y
The invention may be said briefly to consist of a combination seat and Wash basin with Water supply and waste connections.
The seat proper is tiltable from normal horizontal position to vertical position and the back is tiltable from normal vertical positicn to horizontal position and has mounted therein one or more Wash-basins with Water supply and Waste connections the latter connecting with a drainage pan adapted not only to catch the discharged Waste but any Water remaining in the basins when the lavatory is converted into a seat.
For full comprehension, however, of my invention reference must be had to the ac companying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar reference characters indicate the saine parts, and
wherein: n
Figure l is a plan View of one end of the smoking compartment arranged for sitting roo-m; Fig. Q is a transverse sectional vieW illustrating' the convertible seat in elevation; Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional vien7 taken on line A A Fig. 2 with the seat converted into a lavatory; and Fig. 4 is alongitudinal vertical sectional view taken just inside the side of the car and illustrating the convertible seat in elevation and arranged as a seat.
The seat proper in indicated at b and the back at c. A pair of fulcrum plates cl provided with trunnions e are secured to the ends of the seat and fulcrum plates f having trunnions g secured to the ends of the back. These plates arev so disposed that the seat and back may be tilted from the positions showr in Fig. 4 to the positions shown in Fig. 3. The trunnions are seated in sockets mounted on the interior of the car side L and a small partition or seat arm z' sepaof sheet metal.
rating ythis seat from a flxedbasin j. The trunnions g of the back are so placed that the` center of gravity is thrown between themfand the end partition of'thecompartment. This end is double and presents a Goff Wall section le lthe lower edge of which acts as a stop for the back c when turned down as 1n Fig. 3, and a A pair of basins 2 and 8 are countersunk in the back c and each has a Water supply pipe with upturned open end 5 arranged to inclose a fixed Water pipe 6 when the back is turned downl and move from it when the seat is restablished.. The pipe A is controlledv by the usualpush faucet 7. Each basin has also a Waste-pipe 8 controlled by part m'having a .lining '12,' i
a push valvev9, and these Waste pipes have pieces of hose `1Q connected thereto,y While a drip-pan l2 ofjsubstantially the saine length as the back of the seat is located beneath the same. The bottom of the pan is n vinclined from one to the other and its loiver end has a n Waste -vpipe 13 discharging through the floor offtheoar. y l
The space between the ivallslc and m is sufficient for the'pipe ttings into Which access may be had through an opening l5 in partition m.
In order to afford standing room in front of the basins the seat b is made to tilt beneath the same as before mentioned, and for convenience a basket 16 vfor soiled towels is `attached to the underside thereof and arranged to present its mouth upwardly, as
shown lin Fig. 3, when the seat is tilted.
Stability is imparted tothe seat by placing the center of gravity between its fulcrum and front edge which rests on supports 20 and 21 secured to the arm z' and carside respectively. 4
Tumbler holders 25 are so placed that they are accommodated by the basins When the back is in normal position.
This construction and particular arrangement of parts increases the seating capacity of the smoking compartment Without reducing the usual lavatory facilities and the change from one to the other may be readily v made by the porter or` any other person ovving to the simplicity of operation. Another f f advantage being that thelavatory is not exposed until required for use, thus protecting itfrom dust and othersoiling influences.
AlthoughI have described my invention i as an equipment of the smoking compartment of a passenger coach l am not conlined to this use as it may be applied with advantage to other passenger compartments and other carriers than railway coaches.
W hat I claim is as follows z- In a passenger compartment, the combination With a displaceable seat member and a displaceable back member, of a lavatory equipment exposed when the back-member is displaced.
2. :ln a passenger compartment, the combination with a displaceable seat member, ot' a lavatory equipn'ient carried by the seat member and movable therewith andeziposed when the seat member is displaced.
3. rlhe combination with a tiltable seat and a tiltable back of a basin mounted within the back, and havingwater vsupply andavaste connections.
il. The combination with a seat tiltable to vertical position, a back tiltalole to horizontal position. over the tilted seat, a basin mounted within the back and having Water -supply and Waste pipes.
5. The combination with a seat tiltable to vertical position, a back tiltableto horizontal position over the tilted seat, a basin mounted within the back and having' Water supply and Waste pipes, and an elongated drip pan beneath the back and with which the waste'` pipe communicates and arranged `to receive the drips-'from the basin-*When the back is in normal position.
vertical .position,-a Vback tiltable to vbasin mounted Within the back and having Water supply and Waste pipes, the back engaginga part .and being partially supported byk a part of the partition.
7. ln a passenger compartment, the comlb'ination-Within drisplaceablerseat-back, et a fbasin vcarriedbyi the' y:back and hidden there bynvfhenf'the fseatfiisl in use and movable therewith and exposed vvhenthe back is displaced, the saidlbasin having means where- 'l by it yisdrainf-zd when lthe seatfbacl; is returned tof' position.
8. The combination With a seat tiltable to y hori- Zontal position over the tilted seat, `a b asin f mounted Withinfthe bacltand having Water supplyandivaste pipes,- the 'fulcrums of the seat and` back'being offset from their centers of gravity/thereof,land? means for coacting Withfthe iulcrums 1n the support of the said sea-t.
