To all whom 'it may concern Be it known that l, JOHN R. Fissi-Inn, a citizen of the United States of America, residing in the city of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Closures for Vessels, of which the following is a specifica* tion.
This invention relates to vessels which are adapted to ship commodities of various descriptions; and has for its primary object to provide an improved construction, combination and arrangement of parts whereby devices of this character can be simply, economically and durably constructed.
One of the objects of the present invention is to provide an improved closure which will automatically lock itself in position.
A further object is to provide an improved closure which will obviate the use of the usual fastening means.
Other and further objects will appear in the specification and be specifically pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying sheet of drawings exemplifying the invention, and in which,

Referring more particularly to the drawings, and first to the embodiment shown in Figs. 1 to 3, inclusive, the vessel is exemplilied as a bucket or tub for shipping candies and the like, said vessel being provided with upwardly and outwardly tapered side walls 1. In the present embodiment, this vessel is circular in cross section.
As shown best in Figs. 2 and 3, the inner face of the wall 1 is provided with an annular recess 2 extending around the upper edge of the vessel. The inner wall of this recess is tapered outwardly to receive the top cover or closure.
The closure will now be described.
In the embodiment shown in Figs, 1, 2 and 3, said closure comprises a flat disk 3 of wood, which is undercut at 4 to provide a flat seat, whereby it is adapted to rest flatly upon the top edge of the side walls l.

As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the disk 3 is, by
the undercut 4, provided with an inverted frusto-conical body 5, which is of less diameter than the outer walls of the recess 2` and therefore provides an annular space between it and the walls of the recess 2. Secured to the under face of the disk 3, in any suitable manner such as by the nails 6, is a flat metallic sheet 7 which extends beyond the periphery of the bottom wall of the disk 3 and has its peripheral edge deflected upwardly to form a flared liange 8; said fiange being buckled or corrugated as shown in Fig. 3 to form a corrugated knife edge above.
As shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, the flange 8 is of larger diameter than the inner wall of the recess 2, so that when the closure is forced down into the nosition shown in Fig. 1, the flange 8 will be compressed inwardly with the result that the knife edges formed on its upper edge will be pressed into the lateral walls of the recess 2 to form a positive automatic interlock.
.In the embodiment shown in Fig. 4, the wooden disk 9 is provided with a perfect frusto-conical shape, being adapted, with its sheet metal disk 10 with its upwardly flared fiange 11, to be forced down into the recessed top opening of the vessel 12 into the position shown in Fig. 4.
'ln the embodiment shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, the cover 3 is provided with a peripheral flange by undercutting it at 4, this flange fitting down over the upper edge of the side walls 1 and so perfecting the joint.
In both embodiments, it is to be noted that the sheet metal disks 7 and 10, respectively.l abut around their circular corners 13 directly against an annular shoulder 14 at the bottom edge of the recess 2 in such manner that there is an air-tight joint formed between the closure and the inner walls of the vessel for any commodity which may require such an air-tight closure.
lVhat l claim is:
l. In a vessel constructed of penetralole material and open at the top, an annular recess formed in said opening adjacent the top thereof, a closure for said opening adapted to seat in said recess, a metallic facing carried by the under side of said closure adjacent the edge thereof, said facing having its peripheral edge bent against the side edge of said Closure, said peripheral edge being jagged and adapted to engage the side Walls of said recess.
9.. The combination With a vessel constructed of penetrable material and open at the top and provided With an annular recess opening through the top edge thereof, of a closure comprising a disk extending over the top edge of said vessel, said disk being undercut to form a portion depending into said recess, and a metallic disk secured to the bottom face of said depending portion and having its lateral edge deflected upwardly between said depending portion and the lateral Walls of said recess, said lateral edge being adapted to penetrate the lateral Walls of said recess.
3. The combination with a vessel provided with an opening and With a recess around the edges of said opening and an annular shoulder at the bottom of said recess, of a closure for said opening comprising a disk adapted to be seated Within said recess, and a metal sheet secured to the bottom face of said disk and provided with peripheral edges defiected upwardly to form a ilange interposed between said disk and the Walls of said recess said annular shoulder forming a rigid support for said flange.
In a vessel constructed of penetrable material and open at the top, an annular recess formed in said opening adjacent the top thereof, a closure for said opening adapted toseat in said recess, a metallic disk carried by the under side of said closure having its peripheral edge bent against the side edges of said closure, said peripheral edge being jagged and adapted to engage the side Walls of said recess.
