Original application riled December a, 1905, Serial No. 292,480. Divided. and this application filed December 5, 1913. Serial Nth-804,317.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that LEEARLES ORME' Ba s- TIAN, a subject of the Kinggof Great Britaim, and resident of-75. ;Brendesbury road, London, England, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvements ,in Vapor Electric Apparatus, of which the following is aspecification.
This invention relates to vapor electric is, according to present custom, calleda. burner, and this irrespectiveof whether. the apparatus beused for giving light or for;
turing electriclcircuits.
It has been proposed to start mercury vapor apparatus by means of a shunt electro-magnet,'andto leave the latter in circuit other purp0ses, -'such as rectifying or rupduring subsequentfloperation, ibiitlj. find it desirable to range-inane; pressure within the arc to automatically cut puftof "circuit the shunt electrosmagnet during such time as the lamp 'isinOperati n and toresto'r'e the connection-whenthe-current .is switched I oif and the pressure.. 'subsides through cooling, and I mayconvenientlyjefi'ect this by" causing the pressure to act on abody'of mercury behin'd the" positiveelectrode-a as aforesaid for -example by] separating the electro-magnetflcircuit connection from the positive electrode.
My invention panying drawing .which shows a burner adapted to'car ry-out the purposesof my invention. r.
In the drawing .an enlargement b is shown at -.th 'lectrode b and also an enlargementjfe' \e positive electrqelei'c while the bulb '01; receiving that :pant' of the llustrated the accom-l mercury which is displaced from the arcpathin the tube a) is located outside the path of the arc stream between the electrodes 0 and b; and furthermore, between said positive electrode 0 and said bulb d I may provide a subsidiary positive electrode y which is in circuit with the electro-magnet which is employed to start the lamp by tilting or said subsidiary positive electrode 7' may be connected in any other circuit (such as a resistance circuit) which it may be desired to cut out after the burner has trode a and will. ultimately be removed back ,clear'of the surface of the subsidiary electrode 3' whereby 'circuitth-rough the latter will automatically be broken. 4 'In the following claim the terms burner and mercury are (for thesake of brevity) respectively used to denote and include any suitable device and-any suitable electrode ma terial as hereinbefore defined or explained.
'z I claim as my invention':' y
In a burner for electriclapparatus, a mom tainer, main electrodes of mercury therein, a subsidiary contact therein located outside the'path between the main electrodes, but within the limits of the movement of the mercury in normal operation of the burner, whereby the said subsidiary contact is cut out of the circuit.
Signed at London in the county of London and England this 18th day of November C. ORME BASTIAN. Witnesses:
