To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, GUS JATKO, a citizen of the United States, residing at Seattle, in the county of King and State of "Washington, have invented new and useful Improvements in Paper-Hangers Pasting-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to paper hangers pasting machines, the object in view being to produce a practical machine of the class described by means of which the paper as it is drawn over a roll is pasted on one side thereof in readiness to hang upon a wall or ceiling, while at the same time the decorated face of the paper is kept clean and free frompaste thus adding materially to the appearance of the completed work.
further object of the invention is to produce a machine in which the paper handling rolls are bodily movable or adjustable relatively to the tank or reservoir in which the paste is placed, whereby the paper may be threaded through the machine while the mechanism is clear of the paste, and whereby also the pasting roller may be submerged or dipped to any desired depth in the paste according to the level of the latter in the tank or reservoir.
A further object of the invention is to provide a folding and detachable table for the convenience of the paper hanger; also means for measuring oil the paper so that sections of any desired length may be quickly and readily withdrawn from the main roll without requiring each piece or section of paper to be measured individually.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will hereinafter be more fully described, illustrated and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 is a vertical cross section partly in elevation of a pasting machine embodying the present invention showing the parts in their operative or pasting position. Fig. 2is a similar view showing the paper handling mechanism elevated with respect to the paste reservoir or tank. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section through the machine with parts in elevation, showing the means for raising and lowering the paper handling mechanism and clamping the same at any desired elevation. Fig. 4 is a detail cross section through one of the standards and runners. Fig. 5 is a detail vertical section showing the relation of the measuring mechanism to one of the guide rollers. Fig. 6 is a vertical section taken at right angles to Fig. 5 showing the measuring mechanism. lit 7 is a detail face view of the stationary c 1a The machine contemplated in this invention comprises a base 1 which is shown of open rectangular form comprising the longitudinal bars 2 and the cross bars 3 connecting the same, said frame being mounted upon suitable rollers or casters 4: so that it may be readily moved from place to place.
Secured rigidly to and extending upwardly from the cross bars 3 are two parallel standards 5 forming guides as will hereinafter appear. Each of said standards is provided with a T-shaped base 6 at the bottom thereof which is fastened to one of the cross bars 3 by means of screws or their equivalent as shown.
7 designates a substantially semi-cylindrical paste reservoir or tank formed of sheet metal and secured by means of supporting brackets 8 to the base frame 1, said tank being provided with a removable cover 9 which is substantially semi-cylindrical and formed of sheet metal the same as the tank 7.
Mounted to move up and down between the parallel standards 5 is a frame comprising the two head sections 10 each of which comprises an arched portion 11 and a reversely arched portion 12 formed integrally with each other and provided with bearing openings 13 and 14: for a pair of guide rolls 15 and 16 arranged in spaced relation to each other and at points about equidistant from and at opposite sides of the plane of the standards 5. Between the rolls 15 and 16 is a relatively large roll 17 which constitutes the pasting roll, said roll being journaled at 18 in the inverted arched portions 12 of the heads 10 abovereferred to. The rolls 15, 16 and 17 are of suitable length to receive the full width of a roll of paper indicated at 19, the said roll of paper being mounted on a shaft 20 having end pintles 21 which are contained in open slots 22 in a pair of supporting extensions or ears 23 on the heads 10. The paper indicated at 2 L passes from the roll 19 downward on the outside of the guide roll 15 under said roll and thence upward over the pasting roll 17 after which the paper passes downwardly under the roll 16 and thence upwardly parallel standards whlch act as guides where it may be grasped by the operator and withdrawn from the machine in a pasted condition, the rear side only of the paper coming in contact with the pasting roll 17 which is partly submerged in the paste, the
level of which is indicated by the line 25.
The head frames 10 are provided centrally thereof with upwardly extending runners 26 which are in the form of rectangular sleeves as shown in Fig.4 surrounding the along which the runners 26 travel in a vertical direction. Each of said runners is provided with outwardly extending parallel ears 27 between which is pivotally mounted at 28 a cam lever 29 provided with a handle 30. By means of thetwo handles located at opposite ends of the machine, the vertically movable frame carrying the rolls above referred to may beunclamped from the standards 5 and raised or lowered and after being brought tQ-the desired position, the frame may be again clamped by means of the cam levers 29.
In connection with the primary guide roll 15, I employ a scraper or squeegee 31 which is movable by means ,of a hand lever 32- into and out of contact with the surface of the pasting roll 17 forthe purpose of removing surplus paste therefrom before being brought into contact witlrthe paper as it travelsover in contact with said pasting roll. Two of such levers 32 are pivotally ,mounted at '33 on the oppositely located heads 10 of the vertically adjustable frame,
the scraper or squeegee 31 extending practically theentire length of the pasting roll. One or both of said levers 32 is provided with a thumb latchclever 34 ,the latch of which engages the teeth of a rack 35 for the purpose of holding the scraperior squeegee in its adjusted relationto the, pastingroll. A similar pair of levers 36 are. arranged at .the opposite side of the machine, and are pivotally connected at 37 to the head frames and connected by a brush head 38 provided with .paste spreading bristles 39 which work in contact with the pasted surface of the paper as the, latter passes under thesecondaryguide roll 16. The levers 36 are, like the;levers 32. held in-an adjusted position .by means of a thumb latch lever 40 .;the
astationary section 45 and a hinged section 46, the hinged section 46 being adapted to be folded over upon the stationary section 45 for storage or transportation.
47 designates inclined braces between the curved portions 42 and the horizontal portions 44 of the brackets. The projecting ends of the horizontal portions 44 of the brackets are supported by means of telescopic extension legs, each of said legs comprising an outer tubular section 48 and an inner tubular or solid section 49 provided with a supporting'foot or flange 50 at the bottom thereof adapted to rest on the floor.
51 designates a binding screw for relatively fastening the two sections of each telescopic leg to prevent accidental collapse thereof. The upper section 48 of each telescopic leg is fastened to its respective bracket in any convenient manner.
The operative positions of the parts is illustrated in Fig. 1. In order to thread a new roll of paper through the machine, the vertically adjustable frame is elevated as shown in Fig. 2 so as to move the pasting roll 17 upwardly out of the paste in the bottom of the tank 7. The paper is then carried under the roll 15 over the roll 17 and under the roll 16 after which the vertically adjustable frame is lowered until the pasting roll 17 is properly submerged in the paste. The operator then merely has to draw the paper through the machine which acts to apply a coat of paste to the back of the paper and then spread the paste evenly all over the surface of the paper before it emerges from the machine. The machine thus avoids the use of a large and unwieldy table and renders it unnecessary for the paper hanger to carry such a table to the place of operation.
The pasting machine hereinabove described may be made very compact and may easily be carried from place to place and readily moved according to the positions required in the room being papered and also easily trundled from one room to another. The paste is evenly applied to the paper without requiring the paper to be thumbed or handled by the operator thus keeping the paper in a clean condition at all times thereby adding materially to the appearance of the finished work.
To still further add to the value and elliciency of the machine as a whole, I provide means for automatically measuring the lengths, of paper as they are drawn through the machine. This mechanism is best illustrated in Figs. 5, 6 and 7 where it will be observed that the shaft 14- of the roll 16 is provided at oneend with a disk 52 having an outwardly extending crank pin 53 to which are connected the lower extremities of two pawls 54 and 55 held yieldingly by springs 56. and 57 in engagement with the teeth of a ratchet Wheel 58 journaled in a pair of oppositely located plates 59 forming the casing of the measuring mechanism. Fast on the same shaft 60 with the ratchet wheel 58 is an indicating hand 61 which travels around the graduated face of a dial 69.. Therefore, when the roll 16 is turned by frictional contact of the paper passing around the same, the pawls 54 and 55 actuate the ratehet wheel 58 and turn the indicating hand 61 around the dial. until it registers with the desired measurement indicated on the dial. The hand 61 is adapted to be turned backwardly by means of a thumb wheel 63 fast on the arbor or shaft 60 on which the ratchet wheel 58 is frictionally held. The wheel 58 will by reason of such frictional resistance cause the hand 61 to turn but the hand may be set back by overcoming said frictional resistance with the aid of the wheel 63,
What I claim is l. A paper hangers pasting machine comprising a supporting base, guiding standards extending upward therefrom, a paste reservoir supported by said base and open at the top, a vertically adjustable frame guided by said standards, means for raising and lowering said frame, a pasting roll journaled in said frame, paper guide rolls located at opposite sides of said pasting roll and adapted to direct the paper over the top of the pasting roll and in contact therewith, and a table detachably mounted on the upper ends of said standards.
2. A paper hangers pasting machine comprising a supporting base, guiding standards extending upward therefrom, a paste reservoir supported by said base and open at the top, a vertically adjustable frame guided by said standards, means for raising and lowering said frame, a pasting roll journaled in said frame, paper guide rolls located at opposite sides of said pasting roll and adapted to direct the paper over thetop of the pasting roll and in contact therewith, and a table mounted on the upper ends of said standards and embodying a stationary section and a hinged and folding section.
3. A paper hangers pasting machine comprising a supporting base, guiding standards extending upward therefrom, a
paste reservoir supported by said base and open at the top, a vertically adjustable frame guided by said standards, means for raising and lowering said frame, a pasting roll journaled in said frame, paper guide rolls located at opposite sides of said pasting roll and adapted to direct the paper over the top of the pasting roll and in contact therewith, a table mounted on the upper ends of said standards, and extension legs supporting said table.
