Description
mit@ tiit THOMAS J. BARRON, OF BROOKLYN, E. D., NEW YORK.
Letters Patent No. 112,206, dated February 28,1871.
' IMPROVEMENT IN BURNING HYDROCARBON LIQUIDS FORLIGHT.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the lame.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS J. BARRON, of the city of Brooklyn, E. D., county of Kings and State of N ew York, have invented a certain new and improved Candle, which I call the .Hydrocarbon-Candle, constructed for the purpose of giving the cheapest, safest,
land most convenient hand-light yet produced; and I My invention has relation to the construction of vmeans for utilizing hydrocarbon fluids for illuminating purposes, and consists in a novel construction andarrangement of devices intended to serve as an illuminating candle for family or other use.
The letter A of the drawings represents a cylinder or wrapper of paper, prepared by immersion in silicate of soda, and which may be colored to suit the taste of the manufacturer.
The letter B represents a lling of sponge, cotton, or other suitable porous material adapted to absorb liquid hydrocarbon.
The letter c represents a spiral or perforated tube of paper, prepared in the same manner as the outer wrapper A, and arranged in a vertical open space in the interior of the lling B.
The letter d representsthe wick-tube, also formed of prepared paper, and which has\ no perforations except at its top and bottom.
The upper end of this wick-tube is constructed of metal, and is marked n on the drawings.
The letter y represents the wick of my candle, and extends from the metal top of its tube to an open space or chamber below the filling, where it is coiled, as shown.
The letter o represents the solid bottom of my candle, havingan opening at its center through which or in which the interior cylinders are arranged at their bottoms.
The letter r is a plug inserted inside the lower end of the wrapper A, and made secure in such position as to leave a small chamber between `it and the bot tom o, in which the candle-wick is coiled. .This chamber is marked z on the drawings. Y
I usually ill the porous material B with hydrocarbon by immersing th'e entire candle in such fluid.'V
I claim as my invention- The hydrocarbon candle herein described, having tubes A, c, and d, of prepared paper, metal tip n, fill ing B, wick i/,chamber z, bottom o, and plug rr, when constructed and arranged substantially as specied.
THOMAS J. BARRON.
