JOHANNES SURMANN, OF IEOLZHAFEN, BREMEN, GERMANY.
COLLAPSIBLE PACKING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 22, 1914.
Original application filed September 27, 1912, Serial No. 722,604. Divided and this application filed. January To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHANNES SURMANN, a subject of the German Emperor, residing at llolzhafen, Bremen, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collapsible Packings, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to collapsible packing wherein strips of suitable material, for instance corrugated cardboard, are arranged crosswise and are bent up to form the box.
The invention of the present application, which is a division of my application Serial No. 722604, has for object to provide an improved packing wherein no fastening means such as rivets, slits, flaps or adhesive are necessary, the packing being held together when erected solely by friction.
The packing is especially suitable for inclosing a spherical or ovoid article.
According to this invention the improved box is composed of two strips each being adapted to be bent transversely to form five full size panels, so that when folded together and built up to form the box the end panels overlap and are clamped between the contents of the box and the wall of same, thus securing the box from unintentional opening.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing which shows a perspective view of a partly erected box.
As shown, the strip (Z e 5 0 elf, is bent to form a cubical or rectangularly prismatic shell the end panels (Z 03 of which overlap. One end panel d of the second strip is then inserted in the interior Serial No. 743,436.
of the shell formed by the first strip against panel Z2 The rest of this second strip is folded around, and the other panel (Z inserted under the panel 6 Having now described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. A collapsible packing composed of two live paneled strips arranged crosswise to each other, each strip having end panels of full size, and overlapping each other when the strips are bent up to form a rectangular shell, the overlapping panels of one strip being in each case covered by the middle panel of the other strip, and the packing being held together solely by friction of the overlapping end panels held between the inclosed article and the outer middle panel.
2. A. collapsible packing suitable for spherical articles composed of two identical five paneled strips, each panel being of equal size and square, the end panels of each strip overlapping each other when the strips are bent up to form rectangular shells, the overlapping panels of one strip being in each case covered by the middle panel of the other strip, and the packing being held together solely by friction of the overlapping end panels held between the inclosed article and the outer middle panel.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
