a citizen of the United States, residing at Orange, county of Franklin, Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vises, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to Vises and particularly to such vises as have one of the jaws adjustable to hold its working face or gripping surface out of the parallel plane of the opposite jaw.
My present invention has to do with the provision of means whereby such movable jaws may be readily manufactured and assembled in vise constructions and by which they may be speedily clamped in proper working position.
As illustrative of my invention, I have shown as an embodiment a complete vise in its practical commercial form, in which my invention is included.
The construction and operation of my device will be more fully described in the specification which follows.
In the drawings which form a part of that specification I. have employed like reference numerals to indicate the parts which correspond with the parts similarly referred to by numeral in the specification.
In these drawings: Figure 1 is a plan view of a vise in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a side view partly broken away to expose the interior. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the mount for the swinging jaw, Fig. 4 is a central sectional view thereof, Fig. 5 is a side view with a'jaw removed, Fig. 6 is a detail view of the tapered lock pin for the mount and jaw indicating in full and dotted lines two positions of the operating handle therefor, and Fig. 7 is a detail view of my improved locking piece.
The vise thus illustrated is of the swivel base type in which the vise proper is mounted for rotation on a vertical axis.
I have indicated at 1 a base, formed with ears 2 having holes 3 whereby the base may be securely bolted to the bench. has a bore through which a screw pro ects tightened by a nut l. The head of the nut is bifurcated, and in the bifurcation a reversible lever 5 is centrally pivoted, so as to be capable of operation from either side. One side 6 of the vise proper carries a fixed jaw 6. The side 6 has a lateral opening therethrough within which is located a bearing to recelve the usual screw 7 on the end of which is the usual head 8 and the operating bar 9. The screw 7 is rotatably held at its opposite end in a side 10 of the mount 10 for the swinging jaw 11. The side 10 has a channeled-shaped extension passing through the lateral opening of the side 6 and straddling the threaded bearing for the screw.
The mount 10 for the swinging jaw 11 is formed as a casting having at its rear edge a shoulder 12 against which the swinging jaw abuts and finds bearing. The mount has a vertical bore 13 to receive the depending post 1% of the swinging vise jaw 11 which is keyed to the mount to swing therewith. i
I have indicated at 15 the keywhich locks the mount and jaw. This key is inserted in a keyway formed by counter-boring the bore 13, as indicated at 17. The key is curved to conform to the curved wall of the bore 13.
The key is held against lateral movement by two pins 16. The post 14: of the swinging vise jaw has a bayonet slot 18 which affords a clearance for the key when assembling.
The jaw 11 is held by means of a tapered lock pin 19 which is operated by a pivoted lever 20. The lock pin has its lower cylindrical end 19 threaded to engage the threads 21 of a vertical bore 21 in the mount 10 The bore 21 is parallel to the bore 13 and above the threads 21 is smooth and tapering. The pin is smooth and tapering between its threaded end 19 and its head 22 and has a driving fit in its socket. The lower portion of the taper seats in the unthreaded part of the bore 21 and the upper portion in a smooth tapered bore in the jaw 11. The head 22 clears the upper face of the jaw 11 and is bifurcated at 23 to receive the hand lever 20 which is pivoted centrally therein by a pin 24:. The lever 20 is therefore reversible so as to be capable of operation from either side or may be alined with the taper pin and spun between the thumb and fore finger as soon as the taper is eased.
In assembling the key is inserted in the bore 13 and seated in the keyway 17 The jaw 11 is next set up by inserting its post letin the bore 13. The cross end of the bayonet slot 18 affords a suflieient clearance for the post to pass the key. The key is then pinned in place against lateral movement by the pins 16. The lock pin 19 is next set up. The vise is now ready for operation.
The operation is as follows: With the parts in the clamped position shown in the drawing and it being desired to clamp a tapered article, it is necessary to loosen the swinging jaw. This may be done by swinging the handle 20 to one side. In. a vise such as illustrated, the effective lateral swing of the handle would be limited by reason of the handle striking against the jaw 11, thereby preventing the handle making a complete revolution. To obviate this condition, the handle is pivoted on the lock pin and in operating, is usually first turned horizontally as a lever to loosen the taper pin from its set position. After the taper is eased the handle may be swung up until it alines with the vertical aXis of the pin and then spun between the fingers until the pin is withdrawn. The advantage of this construction is that the handle may be used as a capstan bar in the initial loosening of this lock pin, and after the pin is loosened may be spun about a vertical axis to rapidly withdraw the pin.
Various modifications in the form and construction of my vise may obviously be resorted to within the limits of the appended claims.
Vvhat I therefore claim and desire to se cure by Letters Patent is 1. In a vise, a base, a fixed jaw thereon, a movable mount on said base, said mount having a bore therein, and said bore having a counterbore providing a keyway, a movable jaw having a post fitting said bore, a key seated in said keyway of the mount and connecting said mount and jaw for simultaneous movement, and said post having a keyway with a circumferentially cleared portion providing clearance for said key in assembling.

In a vise, a base, a fixed aw thereon, a movable mount on said base, said mount having a wholly smooth bore and a partially threaded and partially smooth bore and said wholly smooth bore being circumferentially counterbored to provide a keyway, a movable jaw having a post fitting said wholly smooth bore, a key seated in said keyway of the mount and connecting said mount and movable jaw for simultaneous movement, said post having a bayonet slot providing clearance for said key in assembling, means for holding said key against lateral movement in said keyway, a tapered lock pin having a threaded end fitting said threaded portion of the second named bore and a smooth tapered portion fitting said smooth portion of said bore and said tapered portion of the pin having a smooth bearing in said movable aw, and a handle for turning said lock pin.
