UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
- DAVID PERRY, OF ST. PAUL, MINNESOTA.
APPARATUS non cas'rnvsf Specification of Letters Yatent.
Patented Dec. 22, 1914.
Application filed December 26, 1911. Serial No. 667,641.
To all whom it may concern i Be it known that I, DAVID PERRY, a citizen of the .United States, residing, at St.
' Paul, in the county of Ramsey and State of view of a flask stand; Fig. 5 is anisometric view of the flask shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 6 is an isometric view of a crucible forming part of the invention; and Fig. 7 is a similar view of a portion of a centrifugal apparatus shown in Figs. 2 and 3 showing the arrangement of flask and crucible in connection therewith. I
Referring to the drawings A representsthe frame of a centrifugal casting apparatus adapted to be secured upon the edge of a table .or other support .as by means of a suitable clamp 2. Journaled in the upper end of the frame is the vertical pivot 3 supporting upon its upper end-the cross bar I. Carried by the'lower end of the pivot 3 is a bevel pinion 5 with which intermeshes a bevel gear 6 carrying an actuating handle 7. Carried by one end of the bar is the flask holder 8-counterbalanced by a weight a suitably supported by the other end of the In carrying out my invention I employ the flask shown in detail in Figs. 1 and 5, said flask as shown consisting of telescoping open ended members 10 and 11.
12 represents a base for removably supporting the flask in forming the mold. The base is formed with a central upwardly extending beveled head 13 surroimded by a groove 14 in which groove the flask is adapt ed to rest. In forming the mold, the flask is placed upon the base, one end of the flask resting'in thegroove 14. The pattern of the article to be cast of wax or other fusible material shown dotted lines in Fig. 1 is supported uponthe base inside the flask by means of downwardly extending pins '20 of fusible. material indicated also by dotted lines in Fig. 1, the pins of fusible material being supported in openings in the head of the base. The pattern is thus supported by means of the fusible pins centrally inside the flask. The material to form the mold, such as plaster of Paris, is then poured intolthe I flask to make a mold, filling the same and surrounding the matrix. The flask may then be removed from the base and subjected to heat to fuse the pattern and supporting pins. This will leave the flask filled by a mold in which there is centrally formed the matrix of the pattern, as indicated by dotted lines-in Fig. 1, and with a gate-way 16 which has been formed in the mold by the head of the base and the inlet openings formed by the fusing of the support pins of the matrix. The flask is then placed within the holder 8 with the arm 17 carried by one member of the flask resting upon one edge of the holder 8. The crucible or cup 18 filled with molten metal is then placed within the gate-way of the flask as indicated in Fig. 7. As shown the cup 18 has an upwardly inclined bottom to fit the-inclined bottom of' the gate-way of the flask and at its outer end is-formed with an upwardly inclined finger flange 19 to permit convenient handling 'of the cup. With the cup positioned as shown in Fig. 7 the molten metal will stand in the outer end of the cup until the rotation of the cross bar 4, through the medium of the handle 7 and operating mechanism, throws the molten metal outwardly into the matrix. After the matrix has been filled and cooled to form' the casting, the flask may be removed from the holder and the members of the flask separated to allow the mold being broken-away from the casting.
- I claim as my invention:
1. Means for casting comprising a cenitrifu l apparatus supporting a flask holder,
a separable flask supported by said holder, a mold within said flask formed at one end with an outwardly flared gate-way, and a metal holding cup having a tapered outlet end having its bottom wall upwardly inclined toward said outlet end, whereby to allow said cup to fit into said gate-way and rest upon the inclined bottom thereof.
2. Means for casting comprising a cen- -5 holder; a mold contained within said flask f trifugal apparatus supporting a rectangular said holder and projecting into the gate-Way flask holder 8, a separable rectangular flask of said mold. removably fitted within said holder and tervIn testimony whereof I alfix my signature 'minating short of the inner end of said in presence of two witnesses.
