Description

W. F. OTTO.
GLASS GAGE FOR BOILERS.
WTNESSES 35 MQK ZI APPLICATION FILED MAR.9. 1914.
Patented Dec. 22, 1914.
- ATTORNEY THE NORRIS PETERS CO FHoToLITHo.. wAsHNbTON. D. c.
"- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM F; OTTO, or WILKES-BARRE, PENNSYLVANIA.
7 GLASS GAGE roza BOILERS. p
v To all whom it may concemi v Be it known that I VVILLIAMTF. O'r'ro, a citizen of the United States, and a resident hoflVilkes-Barre, countyflof Luzerne, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful' Tmprovements in Glass Gages :fer Boilers, of which the following. is a specification. V
My invention relates to an improvement in glassgages for boilers.
. It relates more particularly to gages of the character in which a detachable glass I ent therefrom.
plate constitutesone sideof passage-way for holding water and it has for its object to provide an improved Construction of means for detachably but securely holding` the glass plate in proper position.
A further object is to provide a means of such character that the 'glass plate is` not liable to be fractured. i
'Other 'objects and advantages' of my in-'. vention will be referred to in the` detail ed description-whichfollows or will be appar- In order that my invention may be more readily understood reference should be had to the 'accompanying drawings illustrating v a convenient embodiment theref( It will be understood, however, that changes in the details of Construction may be `made within the scope of the claims without departing 'from my invention. I i i 'In the drawingsz Figure 1 isa longitudinal section of a gage Construction embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same, .the pipe connections therewith 'being omitted; Fig. 3 is' a top planview of the same, one of the vpipe connections 'being shown in section; and Fig. %is a transverse sectionon the line 4-4 of lg. 2. i a e Referring to the drawings, l designates a plate member, preferably of metal, provided at its rear side with aswell orenlargement 2 extended longitudinally and oentrally of the plate. The opposite edges of the plate l are provided with forwardly eXtending fianges 3the outer sides of which fianges are slightly convergent. 'The inner sides, however, are parallel with respect to each other.`
The front edges of the flanges 3 are pro- V vided' with inwardly extending portions 4 constituting shoulders' or ribs upon the inner sides of the outer front edges of said flanges.
' slpeeifioation of Letters Pateit. :Patented Dec. 22, 1914 Application filed March 951914. V seria No. 323 57.
` The opposite ends of theswelled or enlarged portion 2 :are somewhat enlarged as indicated at and' also the upper and i lower ends of thepassage-way formed by such swelled or enlarged portion are closed i by' material 7' and 8 which material is prolong flat wedge 16 the central portion of y 'whichis cutaway as shown at 17. The opposite edges of this wedge engage the shoulders 'or beads 4- upon the inner sides of the jfront edges of the flanges 3. It should be noted that these shoulders or beads incline slightly from their bottom upwardly so that the width of the space between the inner surfaces of the said shoulders and the confronting surface of 'the plate 1 is somewhat greater at; the bottom of said plate than at the-top. I
In order that theiglass platetl may effectually close' and seal the front side of the passage-way formed by the swelled or enlargedportion 2, I provide a Washer or packng 18 of suitable material which is substantially of'the same shape as that of the glass plate and its central portion iscut away in order that `the'view through the glass to the water in the said passage-way r shall not bedisturbed Also in order to prevent the wedge 16 from Contacting directly with the glass, I have provided an outer Washer 20 which is of substantially the same shape and Construction as that of the :a
Washer 18. The Washer 20 is, as will be u seen upon an examination of the drawings,
situatedbetween the outer side portions and theu'pper end portions of the wedge 16 and' the confronting portions of the front side of the glass 1'5.
In order to draw the wedge into position and clamp it firmly against the glass plate 15, I haveprovided the upper edge of the wedge with a screw-threadedstem 21 which extendsthrough a Washer 22 which is 'seatll tending fianges at its opposite edgeswhich larged or sweiled portion 2 of the pia-teh 'ed upon the uppefedges c t-'the fi tnges 3.
The height of ,the Water in the boiier may be `uscertained by observation through the'glass plate in the nsual and-known manner.
By the employ'ment "of e Construction' em bodying' my invention as &boi e described and ilhistrated ;in the drtwings,- have found that the glass plate is -securely .and
efiiciently held in place insnch ntnne' as to ,pi-event letkageof Water from thepssage- Way closed the-eby and alsothit the'said plete isso {protected from the Wedge 16 and that .the pressiire exerted by said `Wedge upon the gless is so eveniy distributedupon the gless that the letter is `mt'subjectd to iinev'en strains so that is not likely to becoine-frectured ,or broken.
` I ,claimi I g '1.' A gege for boilers coinpr'sing a member-'having av g'oove foi'med upon one side tl er eof, ,fienge'siipon-the opposite edges of said-ineinbegthe outer edges of seid fienges bengprovided With inwardly 'ext-ending' 'ortions 'fOl`n1iI1 ,shoiilders the inner surho plate between' thesaid fianges iand elos-` 'faces of said shoulders being inclined from oneendtoward the other, 'e -transparent plate seeted against the said member and closingthe gro'ove thereinyand ewedge n-' ,terposed 'between'the said'plite and the said shoulders for holding the said pl'ete in positien. r
2. A gege for boilers comprising a metal- 'lic plate having@ groove formed and eX- tendng' longtudnally 'thereofl the seid 'plate being provided With foi'wardly exfi nges are provided With nwardly extendshculdei-s at their enter edges, the 'in-v ner siirface of said shoulders'being indined from one 'endtoward the other, a glass plate seated ege nstthe surface of the' said metal 'ing one side of the groove formed instid pltte, e Washer interposed between. one side of the gl'ass plate and the inetallic plate, and a'wedge interposed between the other y copies of this patent may be obtained for side of-the giess plateandthesaid shoulders and holding .the said gla ss platein position,
3. A gege for boilers comprising a metallic -plate having groove formed therein and extending longitudinally thereof. and alsohaving fianges at its opposite edges,`
,the :front edges of said flenges being pro-. j
