LOUIS OHAMBON, OF PARIS, FRANCE.
MACHINE FOR- MAKING- AND FILLING CIGARETTE-CASES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 15, 1914.
Application filed January 3,1913. Serial No. 739,954.
To all whom it may concern:
H Be it known that I, Louis CHAMBON, citi- I zen of France, residing at Paris, France, 7 have invented a new and useful Machine for A device for first drawing from a-bobbin the paper previously printed and perforated which i's-to serve for making the case,,then
measuring the said paper to the correct size,
then gumming it at suitable 1 parts, and finally stretching it, while at the same time tracing or marking on it the folds along the necessary lines a device succeeding that just described for cutting and folding the paper for the purpose of constructing the case without immediately closing the latter, so as to leave it ready to re'ceivethe articles,
vclgarettes for example, with which'it. is to be filled. -The said machine is generally combined with another apparatus not described in details in thepresent specification becausejit forms the subject matter of my divisional application, Serial Number 828,581, filed'March 31, 1914,. -Theesaidapparatus includes several devices'having for their purposes to receivethe cases made by the aforesaid machine,to distribute the articles, cigarettes for example, into the cases,
to gum and close the finished and filled cases, and finally toreoeive and distribute the filled cases.
A. machine constructed-in accordance with the invention is shown by way of example in the accompanying drawings.
I Figure 1 is a side elevation of the whole of the machine. Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the'longitudinal axis of the machineof the device for cutting and folding the paper from which the cases are made. Fig. 3 is a View in horizontal plane, of the said device. Fig. 4 a view in elevation in a vertical plane at right angles to vthe longitudinal axes, of the machine of the said device.
The same reference numerals indicate the same parts in the several figures.
The whole machine is-represented diathe machine comprises 'paratus D is the device E for which precedev it,
I moved up and down by the grammatically in Fig. 1, wherein A is the bobbin of paper previously printed and provided with suitable guide perforations on its edges, the said perforations being placed in accordance with the disposition of the impressions vwherewith the paper is furnished; B, the apparatus for drawing the paper band from'the aforesaid bobbin, and
for delivering the said'paper band in successive blanks, exactly in conformity with the impressions which are traced on the paper, and which aredestined to illustrate, at determined places, the faces or the sides of the finished cases; C, the apparatus for gumimng the said paper band at suitable places and D the apparatus for stretching the paper and marki'ng the folds. These ,apparatus'are themselves known andv are not referred to herein otherwise than as constituent parts of the machine.
Following the stretching and marking apcutting and folding the paper which is of an improved kind and will presently be described in detail with reference to Figs. 2, 3 and 4.
' When they have left the device E, the
cases are received by a wheel F, and the articles, cigarettes for example, are now distributed and'introduced into the cases made by the preceding apparatus, by means of a device G; are gummed and glued by a device H, and the closed cases are transferred into a distributing box I, at the discharge end of which theyhare received by the operative.
Relating to the improved apparatus E for cutting and folding the paper, of which the cases are made, and referring to Figs. 2, 3 and 4, the apparatus isdriven, like those from the longitudinal shaft of the machine through the intermediary of two worm gears 1, the shafts of such as which are coupled by direct gear, I The matrices 2, 3 and 4 provided for the cutting of the paper are firmly fixed on the metal table 5 which forms at the same time a tiebar for the cheeks of the frame of the machine. The stamping punches which are to oo-act with the aforesaid matrices are mounted on a plate 6, which is four eccentrics 7 finally the finished and filled cases keyed on the shafts 8 and 9, these shafts bea The lower spring'presser 23 is then raised by cam levers 24, connecting rods 24 and ing driven by the transmission gear 1, 1', 1 aforesaid. These eccentrics are coupled in pairs by tie bars 7 and move up and down four slides 10 guided in the cheeks 10 of the frame, and tied togetherat their up per parts by tie bars 11 and 12 to which is fixed the plate 6 carrying the punches. The plate 6 carries near the tie bar 12'two spring pistons 13 for the purpose of stopping the paper during the stamping and folding operations. The tie bar 11, carries a spring presser 14 and fixed, blades '15 which serve to fold the sides of the case 'as' will presently be explained.
The spring pistons 13 serve to hold the paper at the desired moment when the plate 6 descends, the paper, being at that time stretched by the drawing'rollers or wheels 16,17 and applied to a forming block 18by means of the upper spring presser 14. Atthis moment the blade 19, constituting the end folder and mounted on alever 20 adapted to oscillate on a shaft 20 under action of cam levers 21, connecting rod 21' and cams 22, folds the paper on the block 18 successively to give it corresponding forms.
cams 25 and holds on the lower, face of the block 18 the paper which has been folded in the manner described. A piece 26, which is raised at the same time as the spring presser 23under action of a pusher 27 actuated by the aforesaid connecting rods, continues further its ascending movement and then folds by means of blades 28, which it carries, the short lower sides of the case on the block 18; at the same time the tie bar 11 continues its descending movement'and completes the folding by means ofblades 15, which 'fold then the two short upper sides of the case. As soon as the short sides of the case have been folded in, the manner just described, two jaws 29 carried by cam levers 30, oscillating on shafts 30 under action of cams 31, press firmly against the faces of the block '18 the folded sides of the case so as to insure a satisfactory sticking of these sides together. At the end of the folding operations above detailed, the part of the paper which constitutes the case is separated from the rest of the paper band by means of a cutter 32 which cuts the paper along the gap 18 between the block 18 and the matrix 4 already specified; at the same time the cutters 33, 3%,carried by the plate 6, cut on the paper band the slots necessary for making the case. The cutting and folding operations so far described being finished, the lower spring presser descends I again, while the plate 6, carrying the cutters, ascends, thereby liberating the upper presser let. The end folder 19 also returns to its original position, disengaging the block 18 so as to allow the finished case to go forward as will presently be explained. v
On the other hand the lifting of plate 6 also disengages the spring piston/13 so that ing through the gears 16 16 the shaft v on which the roller 16 is keyed. The operations which have been described so far are periodically performed, in the order V named. The finished cases are then received in the device F, andfilled, gummed, glued and finally distributed through the devices Gr, H, I, above'specified.
Having thus described my invention and the best means I know of carrying the same into practical effect I claim:
