To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMns H. TANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hoisting- Jacks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in hoisting jacks, and has for its principal object to provide a jack which is? particularly adapted for use on automobiles and'similar vehicles where it is necessary at times to jack up the vehicle to enable the user to replace a wheel or perform a similar operation.
- Another object of this invention is to provide a simple and effective jack from which the handle may be easily and quickly detached, thus permitting the same to be placed in a small space and occupy a minimum amount of room in the tool chest which is usually carried by motor vehicles.
A further object of this invention is to provide a jack of the above type which may be easily and quickly placed in position and assembled for use. i
A still further object of the invention is to provide a novel means for holding the jack in the proper alinement and also providing a roller bearing which will render the operation of the trek considerably easier. 1
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts which will be fully set forth in the following specifi cation and accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of a jack constructed in accordance with this inventiomshowing the roller bearing and guide in place, Fig. 2 is a face view of a jack constructed in accordance with this invention showing the teeth and operating bar, Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view of a jack constructed in accordance with this invention taken on line 7% 3 of Fig. 1, Fig. 4 is a side view in elevation showing the jack in position to be lowered, and Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the pawl which is carried by the operating-bar.
' Referring now to the drawings by characters of reference, the numeral 1 designates the base of the jack having formed integral therewith the channel member 2 which comprises the rear wall ii and the side walls 1 and 5 respectively. The rear wall of the channel member is provided with the ofi-set portion 6 to provide the enlarged chamber 7 at the upper extremity of the channel member. A. suitable roller 8 is rotatably mounted in the channel member as at 9 and the said roller is arranged to occupy a portion of the chamber 7 when in place. A. pair of forward extensions 10 and 11 are formed on the channel member and project in an opposite direction to the off-set portion (5 of the wall 3. The forward edges of these extensions 10 and 11 extend angular-1y as illustrated in Fig. 1 and these extensions a re provided with the connecting plate 12 which is formed integral therewith and is adapted to act as a stop for the locking pawl when the device is in use. Formed integral with the walls t and 5 of the channel member 2 are provided the lugs 13 and 14 respectively which are cylindrical in form and are arranged to form pivot points for the operating lever, which n ill be more fully described hereinafter. These lugs13 and 14 are arranged substantially, centrally of the longitudinal. extremities of the channel inel'nbcr as clearly shown in Fig. 2. A second set of lugs 15 and 10 are formed integral with the walls 4: and 5 res 'iectively near the free edges of said walls and are arranged to form the pivot points for the opera ting lever when the jack is to be lowered. A similar pair of lugs 17 and 18 are formed on the walls 4 and 5 in direct alincment with 'the lugs 13 and 14, but are spaced upwardly from the lugs 15 and. 16 to form stops for the operating lever and prevent the same from. becomingdisplaced when the same is in position on the lugs 15 and 16.
Having described the main body portion of the jack, the next in order is the lifting element which is designated generally by the numeral 1.9, and comprises the body portion 20 having formed at one end the curved angular extension 21 which forms a scat for the object which to be lifted. Extending longitudinally of the body portion ,520 and formed integral therewith are provided the tongues 22 and 23 which are slidable in the longitudinal groove 24.. formed in the walls 4 and of th'e' 'channel member 2. The body portion 20 of the lifting element 19 is arranged so that the rear wall thereof is spaced from the wall 3 of the channel member 2 and it will be apparent that the front wall of the body portion 20 will project slightly beyond the lateral extremities of the walls 4 and 5 of the channel member as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 4.
