Be it known that I, O'rro Pii'rnnMANN, a citizen of the .Republic of Switzerland, and a resident of. Groton, county of Tompkins, and `State of New York, have invented eertain new and useful Improvements in TypelVriting Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The primary object ot' the invention is to provide simple and eilicient means adapted to operate the ribbon vibratory mechanism to adapt the ribbon to have a plurality of fields or Zones of different colors thereon and the said .means adjusted in such a way that the ribbon mechanism may be made to remain inactive in order that the machine may be used for the purpose of mahing stencils.
Other objects of the invention are topi-ovide simple and efficient means whereby a ribbon may be moved across the platen to cover and uncover the printing' pointand the ribbon held normally below said printing` point; and to provide simple and efficient means whereby the Aribbon vibratory mechanism maybe operated to vary the eXA tent of throw of the ribbon to present either of two fields of different colors or different parts oi? the ribbon 'having the same color for Vprinting purposes.

The arms 24 and bar 26 form what may be termed an escapement or other rocking frame as the said bar usually serves as a means to operate a part of the escapement mechanism, which latter is not shown as it forms no part of the present invention. t

this rod may be connected to an arm 27 forming a part of a platen shi'tmechanism. The slides are each connected to one of the bars o r members of a two-part Jfoldable support 28, the members of which may be pivoted at 29, and mounted on one part of said support is a carriage bed 30. A carriage 31 is adapted to travel along'said bed, and on said carriage is mounted a platen 32. This vibrator may bein the form of a bell-crank lever, .one arm of which, as the arm 38, eX- tends normally in substantially a horizontal plane lengthwise of the platen andlin front thereof, and is provided with an end or loop portion 39 through which the ribbon is adapted to pass or be threaded in the usual way. The loop portion 39 is substantially C-shaped lhaving an open part 40 for the insertion or removal of the ribbon at will, and saidloop portion when the ribbon vibrator is operated, as will be presently described, imparts a vertical movement to the ribbon so as to cover and uncover the printing point, the normal position of said loop or end of the vibrator being such as to hold the ribbon/below the printing point. The end 39 of the vibrator is adapted, to move at the rear of an aliner 41 which is adapted to' position the typeheads,..the said aliner being of any suitable construction. The arm 42 of the ribbon vibrator or bell-crank lever extends downward substantially vertically and has an opening 43 which is adapted to be engaged-by the end of an arm 44 of a le-` ver 45. This lever 45 is pivoted at 46 under the carriage bed 30 and has an arm 47 angularly arranged with respect to the arm 44. The lever 45 is adapted to move horizontally and has its arm, 47 connected to one end ot a spring 48, the other end ofsaid spring` bcing held to a pin 49 located under the carriage bed. The spring 48 tends normally to force the lever 45 to move .the end 39 of the' ribbon vibrator downward, as shown in Fig.
1, and 'in case the'ribbon vibrator should be' actuated, as will be presently described, onr
the depression of a key, the spring 48 as soon as the key is releasedwill return the ribbon vibrator to its normal position.
To permit stencils to be made and to actut ateL the'lever 45 and through it the ribbon vibrator owing to the connection between the arm 44 of the lever 45 vnd the arm 42 of the ribbon vibrator or bell-crank lever 36,
various means may be employed. As shown,
the lever 45 is providedwith a projecting portion 50 having a lug or part 51,^and this part is located within the path of movement of a device 52. The device 52 is pivoted by a screw 53 or otherwise lto the rocking bar 26 and said device is in the form of a lever having a handle portion or finger part 54 by which said device may be moved on its pivot. The device 52 has a projection or'e-ngaging part 55 and a part 56,' and arranged between said. parts is a space or opening 57. The parts 55 and 56 are 'adapted to be brought into 'position to engage the lugor projecting portion 51 of the vlever 45, vand owing to the relatively different distances of the parts 55 and 56 from the pivot screw 53, will impart different throws to the lever'45 and c nsequently tothe ribbon vibrator 36.
The arms 24 and the bar 26 connecting the same will have the same extent of mo'vement as each key-lever is depressed, and by properly proportioning the relative lengths of the parts '55 and 56 of the device 52, different fields of the ribbon may be presented A to the printing point. lf the lever or device 52 is moved toward the right to cause the projection 56 to engage the lug 51, a greater throw will be 'ven the ribbon vibrator and consequently t e ribbon operated thereby. If the lever 52 by means of the linger-part l 54 is moved ,to the extreme left' position sothat the part 55 will engage tile part 51 "of the lever, 45, a less throw will be given the ribbon vibrator through the lever 45 because `the said part 55 will not engage and operate the Jlever 45 `as soon after one. of the keys is depressed as is Vthe case with the projectlon 56. On the other hand, if the lever or device 52 is in a central or neutral position to place the opening or space 57 in alinement with the lug or projection 51, the plate or bar 2G may be moved by depressing the keys as usual without operating the lever i5 and ribbon vibrator as the said device at this time will not engage the part, 5l, thus the lever 45 and ribbon vibrator will 4remain inactive to adapt the keys to be operated in the usual way to permit stencils to be made or the invention to be otherwise used, though the partsA may be so constructed and ar- .ranged that a movement may be imparted to the ribbon but not enough to cover the printing point. recesses form raised parts between the same so that by forcingthe lever to either side, it will ride over the raised parts causing the bracket or member to vieldt and the latter will immediately spring back into' position again and thereby hold the device or leveriQ in either of its three positions. The invention will be readily understood from the foregoing' description when taken in connection with the accompanying draw- The ribbon may bethreaded in 'the end 39 of `the ribben vibrator inthe lusual fav and when one oit' the kei/levers 13 is depressed, the universal bar, 16 will operate the bellcrank levers 2O and through them the arms and bar 2b'. This will reciprocate the device 52 back and forth and in the i'iositio-nshown in the drawings, the said device will not actuate the lever 45, and, therefore, the ribbon vibratory mechanism will remain inactive and the-'ribbon remain in its normal position below the printing point. If the handle or part 54 of the dcvice 52 is moved to the right` the .part 56, on depression oli the lievelever, will engage the lug or projecting part 5l of the lever lo and move the saine against the action ot' the spring' `i8. It the device 52, by the handle portion 5l, is moved to place the part in alinenient with the projectingpart 5l., the said part 55 will engage the part 51, as already explained, butwill move the lever 45 'to a less extent and consequently will move the ribbon vibrator and ribbon to a less extent, in which case it will present another lield to the printing point, which, as' shown, will be a black field, though the colors' and chrurarter of the :fields may vary.

If the lever 71 is moved to the left until the slide 66 is' stopped by the screw 68, the projection 76 will engage the larm 77 of the lever 78 and operate the same lin a manner already described, except to a different extent. In this position, the throw' of the'lever will be greater owing 'to the point of engagement being closer to the pivot. 79, thus a diiferent field of the ribbon will be presented for printing purposes. If the lever 71 is moved to an`intermediate positiom'the projection 76 may be caused to enter a slot or recess 85 in the arm 77 of the lever 7 8,' thus permitting the bar 26 to rockwithout actuating the lever 78, and, therefore, the' ribbon mechanism will in this case remain inactive. By .shifting the lever.71 to any position intermediate of these points, dierent elds of the ribbon may be presented so that if the ribbon is of a 'single color, substantially the entire surface of the ribbon may be utilized.
Fig. 5 differs from the construction shown in .Figs 1 to 3 in that the two engaging parts are adjacent to each other and no space is' required in this case to permit the ribbon to remain inactive. In this construction, the/inactive position is oner ofth'e extreme throws of the device. As shown, the part 51 oi the lever 5 is adapted to be engaged by either ofthe parts 86 or 87 of the hand-operated lever-` or device 88. This lever 88 is pivot'ed-at 89 to the transversely extending bar 26, and in the position shown, the part 86 will engage the part 5l of the lever 45 imparting thereby a movement to the ribbon when the key is depressed as hereinbefore described. If the lever or device 88 is moved to the right to cause the engaging part v8T to be in. alinement with 'the part 51, and one of' the keys is depressed, the bar 26 will cause the device 81 to rock' therewith and on engagement of theapart 87 with the part 51, will give a greater throw to the ribbon vibrator and ribbon. By moving the device tothe left so that neither of. the parts 86 or 87 will engage the part 51 of the lever i5 when the bar 26 is rocked, the said lever l5 will remain inactive and consequently the ribbon will' be held below the printing point. In
this construction, the position of the lever i 88 for4 stenciling purposes is at one of the extreme lnovements of said lever while in the construction. shown in the other iigures, the position for stenciling is intermediate the eXtreme movements.
From the foregoing, it will be seen that simple and efficient. means is provided whereby-different fields or rones of a rib bon maybe 'presented for printingf purposes, or the ribbon made to remain inactive in order that stencils may be made; that simple mechanism is provided for operating the ribbon to cover or uncover the printing pivotally held to said bracket, a rocking bar,
and means mounted on said bar adapted to impart different throws to said vibrator or `to permit the vibrator to remain inactive.

4, In a typewriter in which the platen and carriage are adapted to be brought into compact relation to the keyboard, the combination of a support, a bracket mounted' onsa'id support, a ribbon vibrator held to said bracket and adapted to impart vertical movements tothe ribbon, a rocking element, a pivotally held finger lever mounted on said rocking element and adapted to be placed in ditlierent positions to move the vibrator diii'erent distances or to permit the same to remain inactive, and means whereby the lever may beheld in any one of its adjusted positions.
5. In a typewriter in which the platen and carriage are adapted to be folded over the keyboard, the combination oa support,
a ribbon vibrator held to said support and adapted to impart vertical movements to 'the ribbon, a rocking bar, al pivotally held linger lever mounted on said rocking bar and adapted to be placed in different positions to move the vibrator different distances or to permit the same to remain in active, and means whereby the lever may be bold. in an \v one of s alfljusted positions.

In' a typewriter in which the platen and carriage are adapted to brought in close relation to the keyboard when notin use, the combination of -a support for the carriage, a lribbon vibrator, a rocking ele-- ment, a pivotally held finger lever mounted on said rocking element and adapted to be placed in 'different positions to mover the vibrator to different positions or to permit the same to remain inactive, and means wholly mounted on said roc ing element 'for holding said lever in any one of its adjusted positions.

a member held to said rocking member and provided with corrugated portions, a. pivotally held finger lever mounted on, said rocking member and having a part thereof engaging said corrugated portions to hold the same in various adjustments, said lever serving as the actuating means for the vibrator. and means -whereby the position of the lever maybe indicated to determine the extent of movement to be given to the ribbon vibrator or whether or not the said ribbon vibrator is to remain inactive.

In a typewriting machine, the combination of a ribbon vibrator, a rocking member, a member held to said rocking member and provided with corrugated portions, a pivot all;7 held finger 'lever tor operating the vihrator mounted on said rocking member and having a part thereof engaging said corrugated portions to hold-the same in various adjustments, and means to indicate the position of the lever and thereby the movement of theA ribbon vibrator.

In a -tyniwriting machine, the combination of a ribbon vibrator, a rocking member, a member held to said rocking member and provided with corrugated portions, and a pivotally held vibratoioper'ating finger ,lever mounted on said bracket and having a "part thereof engaging said corrugated portions to hold the same in various adjustments.
