Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EnwAnn R). PENROSE, a. citizen of the United States, and residing at Logansport, county of Cass, and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Hydraulic Jacks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the annexed drawings.
My invention relates to the class of hydraulic jacks; and has for its principal object the provision in a jack of novel screening means adapted to screen and protect openings and passages provided in jack parts for the free circulation of the fluid, against the intrusion of foreign matter, and in. such relation thereto as to prevent any possibility of such openings oncoming clogged, or free valve action hindered by lodgmcnt of xtraneous substances in the neighborhood of valve seats.
My invention further purposes to provide an improved jack construction wherein the number of joints and packings is materially reduced; together with a simple and eilec tire arrangement of parts designed to obrain certain and positive operation of the jack.
These, together with such other ob'ects as may hereinafter appear or are inci cut to my invention, I attain by means of a con struction illustrated in preferred form in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure l is a central vertical section through a jack embodying my invention.
Figure 2 is a sectional view of Figure 1 along the line II-II.
Figure 3 is a central vertical section of the integral ram base and valve cylinder.
Figur 4 is a sectional view of Figure 3 on the line IV--IV.
From a practical standpoint, one greatdisadvantage heretofore has existed which has operated against ohtaininr the maximum etliciency of a jack 0 this class, namely :----stoppage or clogging of vital passages by the intrusion and lodgment of foreign matter therein, resulting consequently in the jack. being placed more or less temporarily out of service for cleaning or regrinding of parts. This condition is well known particularly in railway and other shops, and is usually evidenced in the operation oi the ordinary hydraulic jacks as for example when in pumping with the handle the ram refuses to rise, or again as still another indication. of this condition the operating handle rises when the hand is removed.
The main object of my invention is to overi'rorne this condition, by the application of a novel screening means in such a jack, and suitably located and arranged therein to adequately protect and screen valved passages, or other openings, or co-acting surfaces, against interference by extraneous substances suspended in the liquid, or which may have in any Way worked int-o the jack, and which screening means by reason of its construction and location clears itself of any foreign matter it may have so intercepted.
NVhile I have illustrated'my preferred embodiment in the annexed drawings, 1' do not intend to restrict myself in this connection to the exact details oi construction, or to the specific arrangement of parts as shown, as it may he premised, however, that such may be departed from, or the screening means may be applied to other forms or makes of jacks, without in any Way depart ing from. the spirit and scope of my invention, as defined in the appended claims.
In disclosing my invention, the numeral 5 indicates the hollow jack cylinder and 6 its supporting Base which is preferably made integrally therewith. Having a Working fit in the here of the cylinder 5 is a hollow ram 7, provided with a ram head 8 inclosing an enlarged cavity 9 which opens into the smaller diai'netered bore 10 of the ram piston. Yihen the parts are in lowered position the ram head may rest upon the upper face of the cylinder as shown.
The numeral i1 represents the ram base which is exteriorly threaded to screw into the interiorly threaded base portion of the ram at 12, and integrally formed with the ram base 11 an upwardly extending pump cylinder 13 located centrally of the piston bore. liormi'ng the ram base and pump cylinder in one piece in this manner, overcomes leakage induced by packing working loose at joints between like members as ordinarily assembled.
Centrally located within the hollow ram 7 is th pump rod or plunger 14 which is adapted to receive a reciprocating move ment through the usual rocker arm 15, rocker shaft 16, and operating handle 17', which latter is provided with a projecting stop portion 18 co-acting with a stationary stop 19 on the ram head, with a view to limit downward movement of said handle.
The lower end of the pump rod 14: within the pump cylinder 13 has an enlarged plunger head formed by the packing 20, and is further provided with a valve chamber 21 leading upwardly through a restricted valve passage 22, controlled by the check or suction valve 23, to the branch ports 24: which open preferably at a point above the plun- "er head and into the pump cylinder chamber- 25. The valve head seats upwardly in the valve chamber 21; a screw plug 26 having channels 27 being screwed into the lower end of the plunger.
lVithin the pump well 25 and grooved in the lower portion of the walls of the pump cylinder 13 is an annular recess 28, and extending upwardly therefrom are communicating grooves 29 \ertically cut in the cylinder walls at intervals as shown, the purpose of which is more fully described hereinafter.
As previously stated, the ram base 11 is screwed at 12 into the ram, and to form a tight joint therebetwecn I provide a cup packing 30 secured in a circumferential recess in the base by a washer 31 and threaded nut 32. From. the description thus far stated, the simple construction and effective arrangement of the various parts of the jack will be readily apparent, and the comparatively total absence of packing is an advantageous feature in a jack of this class.
For the purpose of providing communication between the chamber beneath the ram base and the pump cylinder chamber, I provide a valve chamber 33 in the base leading to a restricted vertical passage 34 which are controlled by a valve 35 normally held upwardly against its seat by a spring tak ing against a channeled valve bonnet 36 threaded in the chambered base.
As previously stated, the main object of my invention, and that which I desire to claim, is the provision of a screening means in a structure of the class described, located and arranged substantially in the manner described with a view to effectually preventing intrusion of foreign matter in 0 enings, or the like, which tends to detract rom the effective operation of the jack.
To this end therefore, the several openings and passages referred to herein are protected by a lower perforate disk or screen A and an upper perforate cylindrical screen B.
To provide a large screening surface and also with a view to permit ready removal for cleaning purposes, I preferably solder, or otherwise secure, the edges of the erforate disk'A to the removable nut 32. or similar reasons the cylindrical screen B in like manner is circumferentially arranged about a cylindrical member C removably secured on the pump rod, and which has a portion of its length fitting about the pump cylinder 13. The member C has its upper end inclosed, and its walls slotted in any suitable manner, the slots 37 being entirely inclosed by the exteriorly arranged screen B, in the preferred manner as shown.

Concisely stated, it is as follows: The reservoir comprising the hollow head and hollow ram piston being filled with. any suitable liquid in the customary manner, upon the up stroke of the pump rod the liquid passes through the screen B and flows through the passages 24, 22 and 21 into the pump well 25, the suction valve being unseated On the down stroke the suction valve seats and closes, and the liquid under pressure forces the valve open and passes through the communicating passage in the ram base into the lower portion of the cylinder, thus raising the ram piston toward the load by the excess pressure induced.
In lowering the jack, the operating handle is reversed in its socket so that the lug projects upwardly, permitting the handle to be depressed to lowest position when the screw plug on the plunger trips and unseats the discharge valve, permitting the liquid to pass up the passages 33 and 34 in the ram base into the pump well 25, where free circulation up past the plunger head is established by means of the annular recess 28 and grooves 29' to the cylinder chamber above, and then through the screen to clear its perforations of any intercepted foreign matter. Any dirt which may have accumulated in the chamber below the ram base and taken up by the fluid prior to the lowering of the jack is held by the screen A, instead of lodging in the discharge valve passages and valve seats. In a manner similar to that of screen B, the reverse flow of the fluid also acts to cleanse the screen A, as will readily be understood.
Other advantages of my invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art; and it will be understood that many variations may be made in the form and arran ement of the screening mechanism, such as or example the screening device B instead of being secured on the plunger 14 may be secured to the pump cylinder, and such variation is considered within the spirit and scope of my invention as pointed out in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention and illustrated its use what I claim as new and desire to 'secure by Letters Patent is the following 1. In a hydraulic jack, the combination of a standard, a hollow ram having a base portion provided with a passage therethrough, a cylindrical member positioned centrally of the ram bore and Whose walls form a pump well into which the passage opens, a plunger working in the pump well provided with a passage at its lower end, and a screening device carried by the plunger and having a bearing on the said pump well and arranged with reference thereto that on actuation of the plunger the liquid in the jack body passes through the screen before entering either of the passages.
2. In a hydraulic jack, the combination with a jack cylinder, of a ram movable in said cylinder and provided with a pump cylinder, a plunger positioned to have its lower end work in said cylinder and formed with a passage in said lower end, and a screening device in operative relation with said plunger and pump-cylinder and disposed with reference thereto and to said passage to screen the passage, substantially as described.
3. In a hydraulic jack, the combination with a jack cylinder, of a ram therefor formed with a passage in its base and having a pump cylinder surrounding the upper terminal of said passage, a plunger positioned to work in said pump cylinder and adapted to force a flow of liquid through said passage, and a screening device in 0perative relation with said plunger and pump cylinder and disposed with reference thereto and to said passage to screen the passage, substantially as described.

In a hydraulic jack, the combination with a jack cylinder, of a ram movable in said cylinder and having a base portion, actuating means for raising said ram comprising a plunger, said base portion and plunger being formed with communicating passages through which liquid is adapted to flow, and a screening device positioned in said ram in operative relation With said plunger and base portion and disposed with reference thereto and to the said passages to screen the passages, substantially as described.
5. In a hydraulic jack, the combination with a jack cylinder, ofa movable ram therefor having a base portion, a liquid pressure chamber underlying the base portion, the latter being formed with a passage through which liquid is adapted to flow from the chamber to the upper face of the base portion on depression of the ram, and a screening device located in said chamber comprising a rin and a perforate screen peripherally carried by said ring, the ring engaging the basein such a manner that the screen surrounds the passage inlet to positively screen the passage during the downward movement of the ram.
