As a means for steeringthe" device I provided a. steering rod 34 one end of which is pivoted to the rear portion-of the frame of the binder as shown at 35 and the other end of which is provided with a, plurality of rnckteeth 36 adapted to mesh with the teeth of a, spur gear 37 keyed upon a vertical shaft 38 the upper end of which is provided with a hand wheel 39. The toothed end of this steering rod is passed through suitable guides iO-by means of which its teeth are held in engagement with the teeth of the gear and as will be readily seen any turning of the hand wheel will not through'the steering rod to swing the binder upon its bull wheel as a pivot.
Pivoted to the side member 11 of the frame is a hand lever 41 provided with r. locking pawl 42 coacting with n toothed segment as and a connecting rod ll is operiitively connected by one end to the lever 41 and by its other end to the upper rear p01 tion of frame of the binder. As will be readily seen the binder may be tilted by swinging the lever 41. y
In order to adapt my device for use in plowing or mowing I remove the standard 23 and position in the bearing 45 a shaft 45 provided with a, downwardly extending forked standard 46 between the lower ends of which is mounted a bearing wheel 47. The upper end of this shaft is mounted for rotation in the bearing 45 and secured to its upper end is a lever arm 48 adapted for attachment with the steering rodwzhich is dehave ,i

Extending downwardly from the side member 17 of the frame intermediate its I length, is a bracket 52 in the lower end of which is journaled a shaft 53' upon one end of which is keyed a beveled gear 54 and upon the other end of which is keyed a disk 55 having an eccentric pin 56. Connected by one end to this bracket and extending transversely across the machine is a rod 57 the opposite end of which is connected to the shoe 58 of a cutter bar 59. This shoe is further supported in place by a draw bar 60 one end of which is pivotably connected to the shoe while the opposite end is connected to the forward end of the frame member 11. Reciprocally' mounted. in this cutter bar is the customary cutting blade '61 to the inner end of which is connected one end of a pitman rod 62 the other end of which is operatively connected to the cocentric pin 56. As a means for rotating the shaft 53 to actuate the mowing element I have provided a transversely extending shaft 63 which is journaled in suitable bearings carried by the frame and which is provided at one end with a gear 64 meshing with the gear 32 and at its other end with a bevel ear65 meshing with the bevel gear 54: of t e shaft 53. When the machineis to be employed for purposes other than mowing, the bracket 52 and the draw bar 60 are disconnected from the frame thus entirely.

From the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawings, it will be apparent that I have provided a traction engme provided with plows-and a mowing element either of which may be rendered inoperative when desired, said engine being provided with a detachable guide wheel which may be replaced by a standard adapted to swivelly engage with'a binder whereby the engine may be'em loyed as-a propelling means for the bin er. It vzi ll ialso be apparent that I have provided a novel and efiicient steering mechanism for traction engines of the above described character.
It will of course be understood that minor changes in details of construction may be made if desired without in the slightest devention.
What I claim is I '1. The combination with a front and rear Wheeled frame, of a universal connection between the frames, means carried bythe rear frame for swinging the front frame horizontally and means carried by the rear frame for tilting the frame.
2. The combination with front andrear (frames, wheels supporting the frames," a
