To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEMUEL S. Bocos, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New Rochelle, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Electric Trolley-Line Construction, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the overhead line construction of high speed trolley systems and railroad electrifications in which the electrically propelled vehicles are provided with sliding bows or trolleys for engagement with the overhead line structure, and it has particular reference to so-called trolley deflectors that are employed at the junctions, cross-overs or turnouts of such systems for the purpose of preventing the sliding bows or trolleys from becoming entangled with the overhead line structure.
The object of my invention is to simplify and improve the construction and operation of trolley deflectors of the above indicated class, and to provide a device which shall be light, durable and inexpensive in construction and well adapted to perform its intended functions and also susceptible of installation at comparatively small cost.
Devices of this general character have been employed in the past, but have usually comprised a plurality of closely spaced and divergently disposed guard wires which have extended a considerable distance from the junction of the trolley lines to be protected, said wires being located in substantially the plane of the trolley wires and having their ends inclined upwardly. These structures have been used successfully but have involved a considerable initial expense by reason of structural complications and, furthermore, have been expensive to install and maintain.
According to my present invention, I provide a trolley deflector comprising a single guard member of rigid construction which is centrally disposed between the trolley wires to be protected and in substantially the same plane therewith. Additional guard members are also provided at the end of the main guard member that is remote from the junction of trolley wires and said members are divergently disposed in such manner as to associate the several trolley wires with the centrally disposed guard member hereinbefore mentioned.
Broadly considered, my invention is applicable to any form of overhead line construction, but I have illustrated the same in connection with a particular type of construction that is found to be desirable upon railroad electrifications where the trafiic is heavy, the speeds high and the headway short.
The construction just referred to embodies a conducting cable or wire that is suspended from a messenger wire in the usual manner of catenary line construction, and beneath the conducting wire, a steel wire is suspended for contact with the sliding bows or trolleys of the locomotives or other vehicles. Thus, the sliding contact is effected upon a wire of hard material and the wear due to high speeds and frequent intervals is slight and comparatively negligible. At cross-overs, or turnouts it is not always necessary to employ a conducting wire in addition to the steel contact wire, although both wires may be used to advantage at branch lines.
Hereinafter in this specification, I shall refer to the wires with which the bow trolleys make sliding engagement as trolley wires, whether they be the usual conducting cables or the contact wires hereinbeforc mentioned.
My invention may best be understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of portions of an overhead structure embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a side view of the structure shown in Fig. 1, and Figs. 3 and 4: are end views of the same structure taken respectively along the lines IIIIII and IV-IV of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 3 but showing a portion of a modified supporting structure, and Fig. 6 is an outline view similar to Fig. 1, showing a modified structure embodying my invention.
Referring particularly to Figs. 1 to 4:, inclusive, a main line conducting cable or wire 1 is suspended beneath a messenger wire 2 by suitable trolley hangers 3 which are disposed at intervals in the usual manner of catenary line construction Beneath the conducting cable 1 is suspended a com 2 preferably angle lrons, although my mventact wire 4c of steel, or other suitable material, by means of clips or hangers 5 which are preferably disposed intermediate the usual trolley hangers 3 so that a particularly flexible line structure is provided.
A branch line contact or trolley wire 6 is disposed at an acute angle to the main line wires, already referred to, and forms a V- shapedv junction therewith at the point 7, the trolley wire 6 being suitably suspended from a messenger wire f2 by hangers 3 in the usual manner.

,and 11 in a manner to be hereinafter set forth. The guard member 8 preferably comprises a steel member of T-shape section, and the cross pieces 9, 10 and 11 are tion is not restricted in theserespects, and any suitable constructionmay be employed.
The cross pieces 9., 10and 11 are disposed substantially at right angles to the trolley wires 4: and 6 and are severally supported at one end above the conducting cable 1 and trolley wire a by means of a hanger 12 which is clamped to both of said wires and :is secured to the cross piece in a suitable manner. The other end of each of the cross pieces is held in position by means of nuts 13 which are provided upon the trolley hangers 3 for this purpose. The guard member 8 is suspended beneath the several cross pieces by means of supporting'members or hangers 14: which are fastened to the cross pieces at substantially the mid points thereof and are also attached to the guard member 8. 1
Associated with the cross piece 11 and suspended therefrom in a manner similar to that just described, are guard members 15 and 16 which are preferably angle irons and are disposed divergently, the outer ends thereof being suitably attached to the trolley wires 4 and 6 respectively.
All of the guard members are located in substantially the plane of the trolley wires 4 and 6 and are provided with upturned ends in order to obviate the possibility ofa sliding. bow or trolley 17 becoming caught or entangled therein.
In case the branch line is provided with 7 both a conducting cable 1 and a contact or I trolley wire 6, the ends of the cross pieces 9,
10. and 11 which are adjacent thereto, are supported as shown in Fig. 5 in the same manner as illustrated in Fig. 3 at the righthand end of the cross piece 10.
Referring now to Fig. 6, the centrally disposed guarding means is shown as comprlsing two guard members 8 and 8? which are placed in proximity one to the other and may be supported in the same general mandiverging from one end of ner, as already described. The members 8 and 8 are provided with integral projecting end portions 18 and 19 respectively, which are bent outwardlyand upwardly and serve the same purpose as the guardmembers 15 and 16.
Although I have shown and described my invention in connection with a particular type of overhead structure and although my invention, in its more specific aspect, pertains thereto, still I do not wish to be limited in this respect as my invention is broadly applicable to. various types of line construction and numerous 'modifications and changes maybe effected in the arrangement of parts, and the specific structural de tails thereof, without departing, from the spirit and scopeof my invention;
I claim as my inv'entioni 1. An overhead line structure comprising trolley conductors forming a V-shaped junction, supporting means therefor, .a main guarding means longitudinally disposed approximately midway between saidfconductors, and a supplemental guarding means the main guardlng means toward the trolley conductors.
2. An overhead line structure comprising trolley conductors forming a V-shaped junction, supporting means therefor, guarding means longitudinally disposed between said conductors, and divergent guarding means cooperating therewith at one end.
3. An overhead line structure comprising trolley conductors forming a \l-shaped junction, supporting means therefor, guarding means longitudinally disposed between said conductors, and divergent gu-arding means interposed between said conductors and one end of said centrally disposed guarding means. r
4. An electric line structure comprising trolley conductors forming a V-shaped junction, supporting means therefor, and a, single guarding means centrally disposed between said conductors.
5. An overhead line. structure comprising said, conductors and having the, respective ends-thereof remote from, said junction disposed outwardly.
7. An overhead line structure comprising trolley conductors forming a V-shaped 111410- tion, supporting means therefor, guarding means centrally disposed between. said conductors, secondary means attached to said supporting meansfor severallysuspending the respective ends of said guarding means, and divergent guarding means interposed between one of said secondary supporting means and said conductors.
8. In an electric line structure, the combination with trolley conductors forming a V-shaped junction and supporting means therefor, of cross pieces severally fastened to said supporting means, a guard member centrally disposed between said conductors and secured to said cross pieces, and divergently disposed guard members severally secured to one of said cross pieces and to one of said conductors.
9. In an electric line structure, the combination with trolley conductors forming a V-shaped junction, and supporting means therefor, of cross pieces severally fastened to said supporting means, a rigid guard member centrally disposed between said conductors and secured to said cross pieces, and divergently disposed rigid guard mem bers severally secured to one of said cross pieces and one of said conductors, said guard members being disposed in substantially the plane of said conductors and having upturned end portions.
10. In an electric line structure, the combination with a messenger wire, a conducting wire suspended therefrom, a contact wire suspended from said conducting wire, a second messenger wire disposed at a slight angle to the first messenger wire, and a contact wire suspended therefrom and forming a V-shaped junction with said first contact wire, of cross pieces disposed at substantially right angles to said wires, means cooperating with one of said contact Wires and the corresponding conducting wire for supporting one end of each cross piece, means cooperating with one of said messenger wires for suspending the other ends of the cross pieces, and guarding means suspended from said cross pieces.
11. In an overhead line structure, the combination with messenger wires forming a V-shaped junction, conducting cables suspended beneath said messenger wires, and contact wires suspended from said cables, of cross pieces disposed at substantially right angles to said wires and cables, means cooperating with said contact wires and conducting cables for supporting said cross pieces, and centrally disposed guarding means fastened to said cross pieces and disposed substantially in a plane with said contact wires.
