To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOSEPH BnNosoH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Amsterdam, in the county of Montgomery and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dyeing Apparatus, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to dyeing or washing machines or the like, and with respect to certain more specific features thereof, to machines of the so-called rotary stick type.
The invention has for one of its objects to provide a simple and durable machine of the character above referred'to.
Another of the objects of the invention is to provide an improved stick-turning means which will be inexpensive to manufacture and which will embody features of efiiciency and great strength.
Other objects will be in part obvious and in part pointed out hereinafter.
Th invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter set forth, and the scope of the application of which will be indicated in the following claims.
In the accompanying drawings, in which is shown one of various possible embodiments of this invention, Figure 1 is an elel' vational view of the outer side of a rotatable spider; Fig. 2 is a detailed view of the stick turning mechanism as observed from the outer side of the rotatable spider; and Fig. 3 is asectional view taken on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, in which similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views, there is indicated at 1 a frame member or spider rotatable on a shaft 2, which in turn is mounted in a well known manner in a housing (not shown). Sticksupporting members are indicated diagrammatically in Fig. 1 at 3, and more particularly shown in detail therein at 4 and 5.
Referring now to Figs. 2' and 3, there is provided a recess 6 in the frame member 1. This recess is preferably cylindrical and is adapted to provide a rotary bearing for a stick support 7. The stick support 7 preferably comprises a cylindrical body portion 8, ournaled in the frame 1, a lip portion 9 registering with the inner side of the frame 1, and an outwardly projecting stud portion 10. A non-circular recess or socket 11 is formed in the support 7, and is preferably rectangular, opening inwardly and extending into the body portion 8 toward the outer side of the frame 1. This recess is adapted to receive the end 12 of a yarn-stick 13, which is preferably reduced in size from the dimensions of the body of the yarn-stick and is of exterior shape to permit it to be received in the recess 11 and to correspond with the interior shape of said recess. It will be noted that by this construction the yarn-stick is compelled to move in accordance with the movement of the member 7. Fixed to the member 7 is a ratchet member 14. having connected thereto, and preferably integral therewith, a star-wheel 15. A pin 16 passes through the ratchet member and the stud portion of the member 7 to connect the ratchet member to the member 7 and this connection is preferably positive in its character. The ratchet member 14 is of a diameter greater than the outside diameter of the body portion 8 of the stick-support, and the projecting portion 17 of the ratchet member registers with a boss 18, formed on the outer side of the frame 1. It will be obvious therefore that the stick-support is held. against lateral movement in the frame 1 by means of the portion 17 registering with the boss 18 on one side of the frame and the lip 9 registering with the frame 1 on its inner side. Accordingly, the sticksupport is held against lateral movement, at the same time having a rotary movement in the frame 1.
In machines of this character skeins of yarn are supported on yarn-sticks similar to the one indicated at 13, and the frame is rotated to pass the yarn-sticks and the yarn supported thereon through a bath to wash or dye the yarn. Especially in dyeing yarn it has been found desirable to rotate the yarnsticks slightly relative to the frame to cause a movement of the yarn relative to said sticks. By so doing the yarn which was in contact with the yarn-stick before rotation thereof is moved into a position out of contact with the yarn-stick and is accord ingly presented to the dyeing bath for a better and more complete penetration by the the ratchet 17 is disposed upon an opposite sideof the frame 1 from the stick 13. In this manner. and by this construction substantially all the available spacebetween frame members may be utilized for supporting yarn, and, inasmuch as the ratchet 17 is disposed upon the opposite side of the frame from the yarn-stick, the possibility of the yarn becoming entangledwith theratchet mechanism is obviated.
Formed on the outer side of the frame 1 and upon opposite sides of each stick-support are bosses 19, upon either of which a pawl 20 .is adapted to be mounted. The pawl 20 is of a double-nosed gravity type, comprising a nose 21 and a nose 22, a pivot 23 and a weight 24. This pawl is preferably loosely pivoted to the frame, as indicated at 23 in Fig. 2, and either the nose 21 or the nose 22 is in engagement with the teeth 25 of the ratchet at substantially all points in the revolution of the frame 1. A detent is shown diagrammatically at 25, adapted to cause rotation of the star-wheel 15 as the frame 1 in its rotative movement causes said star-wheel to engage with the detent. It will be noted that as the aforesaid engagement takes place the nose 21 of the'pawl yields against the action of gravity on the weight 24 and the teeth 25 of the ratchet click bysaid nose. As soon, however, as the star-wheel is released from its engagement with the detent 25, gravity acting upon the weight 24. of the pawl causes reengagement of the nose 21 with one of the teeth 25 on the ratchet and the latter is held against retreat. Asthe frame 1 rotates, carrying a particular sticksupporting mechanism from a position adjacent the] detent 25 to a position, say, for instance, 180 beyond, it will be noted that gravity acts to move the pawl in the opposite direction about the pivot 23, causing an engagement of the nose 22 with the teeth 25 of the ratchet to continue to hold the ratchet against movement in a direction opposite to the movement caused by the engagement of the star-wheel with the detent.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that a device is provided which accomplishe's, among others, all of the objects and advantages hereinbefore set forth.
As many. changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently Widely different embodiments of this invention could'be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all ,matter contained in the above'description or shown in the accompanying drawlngs shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense. It is alsoto be. under-' stood that the language used in the following claims is intended to cover all of the generic and specific features of the invention herein described and all statements of the scope of the invention, which, as a matter of language, might be said to fall therebetween.
Having described my invention, what, I
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In dyeing apparatus or the like, in combination, a movable frame member, means carried thereby adapted to support a stick for relative movement with said frame, means associated with said last means adapted to cause a movement thereof relative to said frame member, and means on the outer side of said frame'member adapted to prevent movement of said supporting means in an opposite direction relative to said frame member. 7

In dyeing apparatus or the like, in combination, a movable frame member, means carried thereby comprising a non-circular stick socket opening inwardly and extending toward the outer side of said frame member adapted to support a stick for relative movement with said frame, means outside said frame member associated with said last means adapted to cause a movement thereof relative to said frame member, and means on the outer side of said frame member adapted to prevent movement of said supporting means in an opposite direction relative to said frame member.
10. In dyeing apparatus or the like, in combination, 'a movable frame member, means carried thereby comprising a noncircular stick socket opening inwardly and extending toward the outer side of said frame member adapted to support a stick for relative movement with said frame, means on the outer side of said frame member associated with said last means adapted to cause a movement thereof relative to said frame member, a ratchet disposed on the outer side of said frame member in fixed relation with said sticksupporting means, and a pawl pivoted on said frame member adapted to coact with said ratchet to prevent movement of said supporting means in an opposite direction relative to said frame member.
11. In dyeing apparatus or the like, in combination, a movable frame member, a
rotatable stick-supporting member mounted for rotation in said frame member, comprising an exterior bearing face and a non-circular stick socket opening inwardly and extending toward the outer side of said frame member, and pawl and ratchet mechanism associated with said stick-supporting member and disposed onthe outer side of said frame member.

In dyeing apparatus or the like, in combination, a movable frame member, a rotatable stick-supporting member mounted for rotation in said frame member, comprising an exterior bearing face and a noncircular stick socket opening inwardly and extending toward the outer side of said frame member, pawl and ratchet mechanism associated with said stick-supporting member and disposed on the outer side of said frame member, and a star wheel associated with said stick-supporting member to move therewith.

In dyeing apparatus or the like, in combination, a movable frame member, a rotatable stick-supporting member mounted for rotation in said frame member and adapted to support an inwardly projecting stick, and means on an opposite side of said frame member from the stick adapted to prevent rotation of said stick-supporting member in one direction while permitting movement in an opposite direction.

In dyeing apparatus or the like, in combination, a revoluble frame member, a rotatable stick-supporting member mounted for rotation in said frame member, a ratchet arranged to move with said sticksupporting member on the outer side of said frame, and a double-nosed gravity pawl pivotally mounted relative to said frame so that said ratchet will be substantially constantly engaged by said pawl through one or the other of said noses during the revolution of said frame member to prevent movement of said supporting member in one direction relative to said frame.

In dyeing apparatus or the like, in combination, a revoluble frame member, a stick-supporting member comprising a cylindrical bodyportion having a bearingv in said frame member, a lip portion adjacent said frame at its inner side, a non-circular stick-engaging recess opening inwardly and extending in-the direction of the outer side of said frame, and a stud portion, a ratchet member secured to said stick-supporting memberv comprising an inner face adapted to register with the outer side of said frame member and coact' with said lip portion to prevent lateral movement, a star wheel fixedly associated'with said ratchet, and a pawl pivotally mounted' relative to said frame member and cooperatively associated with saidratehet.

In dyeing apparatus or the like, in combination, a revoluble stick supporting member, a bearing for a stick journaled in said member, and a pawl and ratchet mechanism adapted to control the movement of said stick relatively to said stick supporting member, said pawl comprising two noses adapted to alternately engage the ratchet teeth whereby the stick may move in one direction and be held against movement in the opposite direction.
21,111 dyeing apparatus or the like, in combination, a revoluble stick supporting member, a bearing for a stick journaled in said member, a ratchet fixed relatively to said bearing, and a gravity pawl comprising two noses adapted to alternately engage the ratchet whereby the stick may be moved in one direction and be held against movement in the opposite direction.

In dyeing apparatus or the like, in combination, a revoluble stick supporting member, a bearing for a stickjournaledin said member, and a pawl and ratchet mechanism adapted to control the movement of said stick relatively to said sticksupporting member, said pawl being weighted and comprising two noses adapted to alternately engage the ratchet teeth whereby thestick may move in one direction and be held against movement in the opposite direction.

In dyeing apparatus or the like, in combination, a pair of revoluble stick supporting members, a yarn stick loosely mounted therein, a ratchet wheel arranged to move with said stick, a pivoted pawl having a nose disposed to engage said ratchet and prevent retrograde movement of the stick under the influence of the yarn tension on one side of the stick and another nose adapted to gravitate into engagement with said ratchet when the stick is revolved into a different position.
