EXPANSION-BOLT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. s, 1914..
To oZ'Z whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, GABRIEL E. Ronunn, a citizen of the United States of America, and residing in Woodside, in the county of Queens and State of New York, and JOHN Fnarqcrs Boonann, a citizen of the United States of America, and residing in New York city, borough of Manhattan, county and State of B ew York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Expansion-Bolts, ,of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to expansion bolts, and more particularly to that class in hich the members composing the anchorage will are caused to be held in position by the action of a soft and moldable material between two pressing and confining members.
The object of our invention is to provide means which will enable the application of our improved expansion bolt to holes which vary slightly from the normal diameter. It has been found in the art that a drill giving a. theoretical diameter, will, when applied to certain materials, give holes of varying diameter. So in certain of these materials the hole produced will be larger than that produced from the drill. To adapt our improved expansion units to these varying diameters projections are provided on the circumference of the moldable member, which projections are adapted to give a hold during the insertion ot the members composing the unit.
For this purpose our invention consists of an improved expansion unit comprising expanding members and expansible members of movable material, and circumferential projections on the expansible members for engaging the walls of the hole.
Our invention consists further in providing one of the expanding members with a slot by reason of which the member when compression takes place acts as a lock-nut.
In the accompanying drawings,Figure 1 represents an end view of one of the expandiugmembers which is provided with a slot, Fig. 2 is a vertical section partly in elevation, as indicated by the lines 2-2, Fig. 3 is a vertical, central section of the other expanding member, Fig. 4 is a vertical section taken on line 44 of Fig. 5, Fig. 5 is a bottom view of the member shown in Fig. 4, Fig. 6 shows the application of the members to a hole, showing how the projections of the cxpansiblc members hold the cxpausible members in position. and showing the parts be tore the expansiblc member is compressed or molded, Fig. 7 is a view of the expansion unit showing the cxpansible member compressed and the projections on the same molded out of their configuration, and Fig. 8 is a perspective view of the expanding member having projections thereon.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several ligures of the drawings.
Referring to the drawings and more particularly to Fig. (5, the stone or other material to which the expansion unit is to be applied is shown by 10 and is provided with a hole 11, the diameter of which is slightly larger than the largest diameter of any of the members compo ingihc expansion unit.
The expansion unit is applied by assembling the same in the position shown in Fig. (5 with the expanding member 12 having its interior screw-thread 18 engaging the screwthreads of the bolt Li and the expansible member 15 having its rear end or bottom abutting against the rear end or bottom of the cxpansible member 16, the free end of which cxpansible member being enga ed by the expanding member 12 ant the ot er expanding member 17 that fits loosely on the bolt. 1%. Intermediate the expanding member 17 and the nut 18 a sleeve l9 or nipple, is provided so as to assist in the compression and to form a basis for the work that is to be. applied. When the parts are assembled as just described they are inserted into the hole 11 and the projections .20 contact with the walls of the hole and are so arranged as to be slightly extended beyond the circumference of the hole at its opening just prior to the time when the expansion unit is inserted therein, so that it will require a little pressure to force the expansion unit into the hole. The consequent friction will cause the expansion unit to be held in position and enable the screwing up of the same to be readily accom lished. By turning the nut 18 the slot 21 is compressed whereby the ex pending member 12 acts as a lock-nut and the continued turning-of the nut 18 will cause the expansible members 15 and 16 to be compressed so as to fit closel all that part of the hole and the exterior ace of the members oigthe expansion unit between the collar 22 and the expanding members.
These collars or inclosing members 22 are substantially of the same diameter] as the hole and prevent any leakage of the material of the expansible members 15 and 16, when they are compressed. The expansible member is thereby confined between these collars 22 and the continued pressure will cause the same to be tightly forced'against the Walls of the hole and assure the permanent fitting of the expansion unit therein.
In case it should happen that the diameter of the hole is of the same diameter as the main part of the expansible member, as shown by 23 in Fig. 6, that is as if the projection Were fastened, it is a very simple matter to strike off the projection and thereby adapt the expansible member to that particular diameter. The three projections or lugs 20 may thus be fitted to holes irregularly drilled and may be readily filed or cut away to adapt the expansible member to the particular diameter of the hole.
In the drawings We have shown three lugs arranged in the position shown in Fig. 5, but it is clear that more or less of these lugs may be used, and that the shape of the same may be changed to accomplish the result intended.
We claim:
1. In an expansion unit, the combination of a bolt having screw-threads thereon, an expanding member tapered in thedirection of the opening of the hole to Which the unit is applied, said expanding member having screw-threads engaging the screwthreads of the bolt and having a slot therein dividing the expanding member longitudinaily, and an expansible member of a mateing member for permitting the tightenmgof the expanding member on the bolt.
3. A11 expansion bolt, comprising a bolt having screw-threads thereon, an expanding member having screw-threads engaging the screw-threads of the bolt and having a slot,
and expansible means of a material capable of being molded, engaged by the expanding member With the slot, and another expanding member engaging the other side of the expansible means, said expansible means having their entering end diameters of substantially the same size as the entering end diameters of the expanding members and having circumferentlal lugs extending beyond the circumference of the expansible members and adapted to contact with the Walls of the hole, for holding the expansible means in true position preliminary to the compression of the expanslble means and during the engagement of the entering portions.
In testimony, that we claim the foregoing as our invention, we have signed our names in presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
