Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 8, 191-11.
Application filed May 26, 1914. Serial No. 841,095.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK PROKOP, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bit- Stocks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to screw drivers and has for its primary object to provide a tool of this nature which is adapted to be used in the ordinary well known manner in driving certain kinds of screws, and particularly large ones, but which is provided with a crank device which permits use of the device in driving small screws with great rapidity. I
A further object of the invention is to provide a screw driver of this character which is composed of few parts and is extremely simple in construction, whereby it will be eilicient and reliable in operation, and maybe manufactured at a small cost.
The invention consists in the features of construction, combination,'and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully descri -cd and claimed, retercnceheing had to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a sid elevation of the tool, showing the operating crank handle in its folded position; Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same; Fig. 3 is a. longitudinal sectional View on line 3-3 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a similar view showing the crank device operative; Fi 5 is a transverse sectionalview on line 5-'.) of Fig. -l-; and. Fig. 6 is a similar view on line 66 of Fig. 4. Fig. 7 is a sectional view taken on line 7--7 of Fig. 4.
Inthe drawing, the nun'ieral l designatorthe elongated handle of the tool, which is constructed preferably of wood or like material and is provided with a longitudinal bore 2. in which a metallic bushing 3 is mounted. This bushing is provided with a longitudinal hearing o 'ioning, whose major portion is cylii'idriral but which has one end thereof constructed non-circular in transverse section as at i. The handle is pro vided extcriorly in its sides with enlarged transverse grooves which all'ord fingerholds. A driving shaftf has its cylindrical end portion 7 rotatahly and slidahly mounted within the bushing, a, non-circula r portion 8 being provided upon the shaft for engagement Within the non-circuhuportion 4 of the bushing openingwhen the handle is forced inwardly upon the shaft, as shown particularly in Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive. A. head 9 is detachably mounted upon the end oithe shaft which projects outwardly from the end of the handle bushing opposite to that in which the non-circular portion 8 is adapted to fit. This end of the shaft is also non-circular in cross-section so that it fits within the correspondingly shaped opening 10 in the head 9 to prevent relative rotation of the head and shaft. A securing screw 11 is detachably mounted within this end of the shaft and a washer 12 is mounted between its head to secure the latter in position upon e shaft, wherein its inner face is adapted for frictional engagement with the hearing plate 13 mounted upon the adjacent end of the handle. when the shaft is in its operative position with its non-circular portion 8 out of engagement with the portion -1 of the bushing opening.
An operating crank H. having a handle 15 is pivotally connected at its inner end with the head 9 by means of the tangentially disposedpivot pin 16. By means of this crank, the shaft may be rotated when in its operative position with respect to the handle. The crank, however, is adapted to be folded inwardly into inoperative position within a transverse "recess 17 in the outer end ol the head 9, when the shaft is inoperative. The opposite end of the shaft (i is provided with a screw-engaging portion '18. This screw driver is peculiarlyadapted for use by jewelers, watch makers, and piano makers, for it may he used to drive small screws, such as are found in watches, clocks,
and the like. with great rapidity by operation of the crank. \Vhen it heroines necessary to use the device for driving large screws, in which operation greater power is required, the shaft is moved into its inoperative position. after the handle has been turned to bring the non-circular portion .1- of its hie-hing opening into proper registration with the portion 8 ol' the shaft. The crank is then i'oldcd, inwardly to its inoperative position and the handle is grasped with the lingers engaging the recesses 5, whereupon the sci-cw driver may he turned in the mannor in which the ordinary form of screw driver is operated.
What i. vlaimed is:
l. A bit stock comprising a handle proand the head 9 so as lvmll vided with on opening therein having a non-circular portion an operating shaft rototahly and longitudinally adjustahly mounted Within the said opening With its ends projecting outwardly therefrom, one
end of the shaft hein g provided with an engaging portion, the shaft being provided further with a noncii'cnlar portion adapted to engage \vifihin the non-circular portion of the handle opening in inoperative position a head fixedly mounted upon the opposite end of the shaft and being adapted to be disposed in spaced relation to the ndjaoent tion, the shaft being provided further with a non-circnlur portion adapted to engage Within the non-circular portion of the handle opening in inoperative position, a head fixedly mounted upon the opposite end of the shaft and being adapted to be disposed in, spaced relation to the adjacent end of the handle when the shaft is in inoperative position with res ee he the handle and an operating crank provided upon the said head.
A bit stoclz eomprisin a handle provided With-an opening therem'having a noneiroula'r portion, an operating shaft rotatahly and longitudinally adjustably mounted Within the said openingwith its ends pro- 4o jecti'ng outwardly fiherefroni, one end of the shaft being provided with an engaging portion, the shsiift being provided. further with a non-o ircular portion adapted to engage within th'e non-cireular portion of the. handle opening in' inoperative position, a
. head fixedl yywiiounted upon the opposite end of theshal; and being adopted to be dis posed in s 'iced relatlon to aoi ecent end of the handle when the shaft is in moperw tive 'osilion with respect $0 the handle, the
said 'TlQljfl being provided inits outer end face wliiih a transverserecessi and a foldable .opemoi ilg crank having one end ,pivotelly connected with the head in one end. of its moose and being adopted. to be folded Within the recess in 'moperative position.
