Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 8, 1914.
Application filed June 10, 1914. Serial No. 844,283.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NANCY E. GRAVES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Knowles, in the county of Madera and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Knee-Rests for Crutches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accom panying drawings.
This invention relates to attachments for crutches, and particularly to a knee rest which is adapted for connection to the stem of a crutch:
An object of this invention is the provision of a knee rest for crutches, which includes an angular base plate, one end of the base plate being secured to the stem of the crutch, the other end of the base plate extending inwardly at an angle to the crutch to support the knee, the base plate having a cushion suitably connected thereto to provide a soft rest for the knee.
With this and other objects in view, my invention consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which,
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of my improved knee rest, showing the same attached to a crutch; Fig. 2 is an edge elevational view thereof; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the base plate and a portion of the crutch, showing the registering openings therein; Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the cushion; and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the cover. 1
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates a crutch, the stem 2 of which is provided with a pair of vertically spaced openings 3, and 4 designates the elongated base plate of my improved knee rest, the base plate being bent intermediate of its ends, so that the ends thereof are disposed at substantially right angles to each other. One end of the base plate is disposed vertically and is provided with a pair of openings 5 which register with the openings 3 in the stem of the crutch,
and bolts 6 are disposed through the registerlng openings 3 and 5, nuts 7 being threadably mounted upon the free ends of the bolts to fasten the plate to the crutch. The inwardly extending end of the plate 4 is curved as at 8, to conform to the curvature of the knee, and mounted upon the plate is a cushion 9 which is bent so that the same entirely covers the inner face of the base plate. The covering 10 of leather or other sultable material is arranged to entirely cover the cushion 9 and the base plate 4, the cover ng being provided with a slit 11 in one side, whereby the same may be quickly engaged over the base plate and cushion, the edges of the slit being stitched together after the covering has been applied to the device, so that accidental disengagement of the covering is prevented.
In assembling my improved rest, the bolts 6 are first disposed through the openings 5 in the base plate, whereupon the cushion 9 is placed against the inner face of the plate, the cushion covering the heads of the bolts and the covering is then disposed to entirely inclose the base plate and the cushion, and when the edges of the slit 11 are stitched together, the bolts 6 are disposed through the openings 3 in the stem 2 of the crutch, so that the same are in position to receive the nuts 7, which, when turned upon the bolts to engage the opposite face of the stem, securely fasten the knee rest to the crutch.
It will be seen that my improved knee rest is of such construction that the same may be quickly and easily applied to or removed from a crutch, the rest serving to support the weight of an injured leg of a person which must ordinarily be held by the person in a bent position so that the foot of the injured leg is spaced above the ground. By the provision of the rest, the strain of holding the leg in this unnatural position is obviated, and the cushion supported upon the inner face of the plate presents a soft surface to the knee.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent, is
A knee rest for crutches comprising an In testinnon whereof l hereunto aflix my angular base plate, one end of the base plate slgnature in t e presence of two witnesses. being disposed vertically for connection to the stem of the crutch, the other end of the a NANCY GRAVES 5 base plate extending inwardly from the Witnesses: X
crutch to support the knee, and a cushion C. F. Pnncmno,
carried by the base plate. WAL-T'ER A. SMITH.
