LAST AND STAND FOR HOLDING LASTS.
Application fi1ed April 14, 1914.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES SI-IAur,a subject of the Kingdom of Great Britain, residing at Dubuque, in the county of Dubuque and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lasts and Stands for Holding Lasts, of which the following is a specification.
The main object of my invention is to provide a simple and convenient device for use in repairing boots and shoes that can be used by those skilled or unskilled in the art, and readily adapted for use in repair men, women and children.
It consists in a base-board provided with numerous recesses and in a frame to which several lasts, preferably four, are secured in such a manner that some part of two or more of the lasts shall engage in some of the recesses and hold the lasts and frame from horizontal movement.
It further consists in means for securing the frame to the base-board and the boot or shoe to be repaired rigidly upon the last, and further in relieving the jar of the blow in repairing the shoe.
It will be fully described and shown in the following specification and illustrated in the drawings accompanying the same and forming a part hereof, how I accomplish the end sought.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the baseboard showing the recesses therein. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the frame secured to the base-board showing two lasts in position for use. Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the frame secured to the base-board showing one last in position for use. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the base-board with frame attached and showing the lasts and cushion.
Like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in each of the figures.
Having reference to the drawings 2 designates the base-board, which is provided with numerous recesses 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 12 and 14: and a hook 15. To one side is attached a ratchet bar 16 and to the opposite side a ring 18 in which is loosely secured a strap 20. Upon this base-board 2 is removably secured a frame 22, which is preferably of T shape in cross-section and consists of two parts 24 and 25 united together at rightangles to each other, or cast integral. To the end of the part of the frame 25 is secured a last 26 for the left foot of a man Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dee. 8,1914. Serial No. 831,727.
and at the end of the heel is a projection or lug 28. When the last is not in use the lug 28 rests in the recess 1.2 and holds that part of the frame from horizontal movement. At the end of the part 24 of the frame is secured a last 30 adapted for the repair of shoes worn upon the right foot of a man. This last is also provided with a lug 32, adapted to engage the recess 5 in the baseboard when the lug 28 engages the recess 12 and further prevents horizontal displacement. At the union of the parts 2-11 and 25 of the frame, is secured a standard 3 1 carrying on its outer end a last 35 adapted for ladies shoes. This last is provided with a rib 36 on one side adapting it to rest at certain times in the recess 8 as shown in Fig. 8. Also on the part 24: about midway be tween the standard 31 and the last 30 is another standard 38 carrying on its outer end a last 40 Which is provided with a lug 42 on the heel, which lug is so set as to con veniently engage the recess 10 when the frame is in certain positions and prevents horizontal movement of the frame.
For the purpose of cushioning the stroke of the tool on the work in repairing, there is provided a pad or cushion 45 that is placed under the frame and rests on the base-board and if the operator holds the base-board, with the frame and lasts on his lap, there will be but little jar when pegging or nailing takes place.
On the side of the frame is a loop or ring 18 in which is secured a strap 20, which is:
adapted to be brought over the front end of the work and hold it fast upon the last. In, Fig. 4 there is a loop on the opposite side of the base-board (not shown) in which a strap 50 also engages a last and is adapted to be brought over the work and hold it at the rear end of the last. Further-means of bolding the frame with the last thereon. is by the ratchet 16 and the hook 15 with a ratchet bar 17 engaging the hook and also the ratchet 16 which holds the frame rigidly on the base-board.
The manner of operating this device whereby I accom lish the end sought is substantially as follows: If it is desired to repair ladies or childrens shoes, they may be placed upon the last 35 or 40, in the manner shown in Fig. 2, then the lug 32 on the heel of the last 30 will engage the recess 5 and the heel 28 on the last 26 will be brought in engagement with the recess 12.
Then the ratchet bar 17 is brought into engagement with the hook 15, and across the frame into engagement with one of the notches in the ratchet 16, which will rigidly anchor the frame on the base board 2. Ihe lugs on the lasts 26 and 80 in the recesses 5 and 12 will prevent any horizontal move ment of the frame or lasts. If the work is upon, say last 35, the strap 20 is brought over the toe end of the work and buckled.
into the ring 18. If it is desired to operate on a mans shoe on last 30 the frame is turned as shown in Fig. 3 with the rib on the last 85 in engagement with the recess 8 and the heel in engagement with the recess 10 and the rib on the last 26 is in engagement with the recess 4- and the heel with the recess 5 and the ratchet holds the frame rigidly.
In Fig. 4 is shown the last 9.6 in position to operate upon a shoe for the right foot and in this the heel of the last 35 engages the recess 6 and the heel of the last 40 in recess 10 and the rib on the side of the last 30 is in the recess 14. In this the strap 50 passes over the instep of the last and holds the work thereon.
It will. be seen by this mode of construction and manner of manipulation that it can be adapted to be used with different kinds of work, different sizes and it may be safely operated while upon the lap of the operator without any danger from injury by the jar of the blow of the operator.
Having now described my invention what I claim is:
1. In a device of the character described, a base-board provided with a plurality of recesses, a frame carrying a plurality of lasts, means for cushioning the frame on the baseboard, and means for holding the frame on the base board.
2. In a device of the character described, a base-board having a plurality of recesses, a cushion on the base-board, a frame, a plurality of lasts attached to the frame, means attached to the lasts and engaging the base for preventing horizontal movement of the frame and lasts, and means engaging the 1igrame for holding the frame and lasts on the ase;
3. In a device of the character described,
a base-board having a plurality of recesses in its face, a frame, a plurality of lasts attached to the frame, means attached to the lasts and adapted to engage the recesses in the base-board and prevent horizontal move 1 ment of the frame, a cushion between the frame and the base, and means connected with the base and engaging the frame to hold the frame with the lasts on the base.
4;. In a device of the character described, a base-board having a plurality of recesses, a frame having two parts integral with and setatright-angles to each other, a plurality of lasts of different sizes secured to the frame, means on the lasts adapted to engage in the recesses in the base. and hold the frame from horizontal movement, and means attached to the base and engaging the frame to hold the frame on the base and the lasts in engagement with the recesses.
5. In a device of the character described,
a base-board having a plurality of recesses therein, a cushion upon the base-board, a frame of substantially T shapeincross-section andformed of two parts setat substantially right-angles to each other and each part having a last secured to the outer end of'each' part, a plurality of lasts secured to.
the frame, means attached to the lasts adapted to engage the recesses in the base board and prevent horizontal displacement,
and means connected with the baseand engaging the frame to hold the frame on the cushion on the base. r
6. In a device of the character described. a base-board provided with recesses in its upper surface, a frame, a plurality of lasts attached to the frameand provided with ribs and lugs adapted to engagethe recesses in the base-board and prevent horizontal movement of the frame on the base-board, a cushion between the frame and base-board, means for anchoring the frame on the baseboard, and a strap secured to the base and adapted to hold the work on the lasts.
In testimony whereof I affix m Y signature in presence of two witnesses.
