in the county ot Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useitul improvements in Fall-Rope Carriers, oi which the following is a specification.
r1`his invention relates to Yfall rope carriers for cableways.
The object of my improvements is to provide positive means for causing said carrier to traverse the supporting cable and at a predetermined ratio of speed relatively to the speed ot' the driving line.
Another object of my improvements is to provide means for readily changing any given ratio of speed to some other ratio.
Other objects ot' my improvements will appear in the specification and be particularly pointed out in the claims.
lV ith these objects in view the preferred form of my improvements is illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my fall rope carrier and Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation on line Q, 2 of Fig. 1.
Before describing the invention in detail I desire to have it understood that the invention is not limited to the particular construction and arrangeurentJ of parte which I have illustrated and shall hereinaiter describe, and that various changes may be made in the mechanism without departing from the spirit or scope ot the invention, and that the phraseolog'v which 'I employ is for the purpose of description and not of limitation.
My improvements are herein illustrated as applied to that type of tall rope carrier set forth in Letters Patent of the United States Number 10039.61, granted September 12, 1911, on the joint invention of myself and Edward H. Deline. It will be obvious however to those skilled in the art that my present improvements are equally applicable to a wide variety of types of fall rope carriers and are not restricted to the particular type illustrated.
In the iigures of the drawing 3 is the usual supporting cable, 4 is the driving or traction line, l the return run thereof and 5 is the hoisting or fall rope. Two supporting cable traverse wheels 7, 8 are rotatably mounted on lixed axes supported between horizontal side frames 9, 10. These gripper wheels are also urged upwardly to lgrip cable 3 between them and traverse wheels 7, 8 respectively. Said gripper wheels 19, Q0 are rotatably mounted in the `.tree ends oi arms 21, 22 respectively. Said arms are pivotally mounted at their upper ends in convenient positions in side iframes 9, l0 on pivots Q3, 24, said pivots preferably being' concentric with wheels 7, S all respectively. Said arms 21, 22 are preirably double arms as 21, 21a on each side oit wheel 19.

As my improved device, in that embodiment thereof chosen for illustration, is symmetrical relatively to a vertical plane through the axes of wheels 13, 14 Fig. 1, a further description of those parts on one side of that plane will suflice for both.
For causing gripping wheel 1.) to rotate and thus advance the carrier along cable 3 and I provide driving wheel 15 with gear 17 fixed thereto and concentric therewith and I provide driving wheel 15 with gear 18 similarly tired thereto, said gears being in mesh. Vheel 15 is fixed to sleeve 83 by pin 34 and gear 1S is remov ably iiXed to that sleeve by ley Said gears 17, 18 may therefore be readily removed from their respective positions and interohanged or gears of other sizes substi-V tuted, thereby varying at will the ratio of rotation of wheels 15 and 19. iVheel 15 is preferably of larger diameter than wheel 19 so that the traction of driving lineV L1 may be depended upon to rotate lthat wheel against the resistance of the train including gears 18, 17 and wheel 19 and Cause said wheel 19 to rotate against cable 3 and drive the fall rope Carrier along that cable. To provide added eilicieney for such drive, l, in some eases, provide wheel 19 with gear 3G iXed thereto for driving gear 37 of wheel 7. Said wheels are illustrated as of equal diameter and said gears will therefore be of equal diameter as shown.
I claim:
1. A fall rope carrier including in oom'- bination two supporting cable traverse wheels for engaging the upper side of the supporting cable, a driving wheel for engaging the under side of the driving line, a gripping wheel for engaging the under side of the supporting Cable, a tension wheel for engaging the upper side of the driving line, means for driving said gripping wheel from said driving wheel, and means for driving one of said traverse wheels from said gripping wheel.
