UNITED STATES PATENT Ormea.
VILSON BOI-IANNAN, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN SEAL-LOCKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 112,011, dated February 21, 1871.
I, WILSON BOHANNAN, of Brooklyn, in the State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Padlocks, of which the following is a specification Nature and Objects 0f the Intention.
My invention relates to apivoted seal-holder, which is tirmly secured in position over the keyhole without the aid of a spring, by means of an arm within the lock-case, which is engaged and held by the nose ofthe shackle when locked.
Description of the Accompanying Dwnmng.
Figure l is a front View of the lock with the upper face-plate removed. The parts are here shown in unlocked condition. Fig. 2 is a front view of the face-plate with the sealholder and its protecting cover attached thereto, the said attachments being shown in their retracted position. Fig. 3 is an internal View of the face-plate, showing the lockingarm of the seal-holder in the position which it assumes when the said seal-holder is closed over the key-hole. Fig. 4 is a section of the faceplate and its attachments at :v m, Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is an edge view of the lock, looking from below.
General Description.
The casing A, cap or face plate A', and shackle G may be made in customary manner.
B is a bolt pressed forward by a spring, b, but held in its retracted position when the shackle is out by means of a dog, I), which is pivoted on the stud F and pressed upward by the spring G, so as to cause it to throw up the shackle and engage with the fence b of the bolt when the said bolt is retracted by the key.
H H II represent the tumblers7 which engage with the fence b', and need not differ materially in construction and operation from those in common use for a like purpose. The tumblersprings are shown at h.
I represents my seal-holder, which is pierced with a key-hole, t', corresponding in shape and size with that shown at .I in the face-plate of the lock.
S may represent a seal, of variegated glass 0r other suitable material, applied in a recess or cavity in the seal-holder I. The said recess is made with an open side, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, to admit of the ready removal and insertion of the seals when the sealholder is turned back from its position over the key-hole J.
When in position the open edge of the sealholder is covered by a stationary iiange, K, on the face-plate A', so that the seal will be enveloped on all sides and its escape prevented.
The seal-holder is secured to a pintle, L, which turns in the face-plate, and carries on the inside of the casing a rigid arm, M, upon the edge of which the shackle slips down when it is locked, thereby securing the seal-holder im movably in position.
N is a protecting-cover, to be closed over the seal-holder when in position. This may be pivoted at any point, and held by a springcatch, O, located at or near either end, as preferred.
A hole, n, is provided through which to i11- sert a pointed instrument to release the cover when desired.
P in Fig. 2 represents a lug which engages with a lip or ange, 1J, Fig. 5, (shown in dott-ed lines in Fig. 2,) to hold the cover down in close contact with the seal-holder.
Operation.
The casing A and face-plate A being prop erly secured together, and the parts being in other respects in the positions shown in Figs. l and 2, if it be desired to close the lock, a seal of suitable character is inserted in the sealholder, and the latter closed over the key-hole. The shackle then may be shut down, and, coming first in contact with the latter, is at the same instant driven into the recess formed for it in the shackle, and the tumblers H fall into position behind the fence b in customary manner. The shackle being thus held by the bolt and the latter by the tuniblers, while the shackle in its turn secures the sealholder I, and this, in conjunction with the projecting flange K, secures the seal over the key-hole, it becomes impossible to open the lock without breaking the seal. The seal being broken and the key inserted, it retracts the tuinblers in customary manner, and the dog D, rising in front of the fence b', secures the holt and throws up the shackle. The key is then removed, and the seal-holder, having` been released by Jche shackle, can be turned back for the removal of the broken seal and the insertion of the new one.
Claim. I
I claim as my invention-- The pivoted seal-holder I, carrying an arm,
