Specification of Letters Patent.
, Application filed February iii-1914. Serial No, 818,882.
To all whom it mag concern Be it known that I, Kn'ien'r Hi TnoMrsoN, a citizen of the United States of America,
residing at Shelby, in the countyi of Richlandand State of Ohio,have invented certain new and usefiul Improvements in Electric improvements in electric lamps for vehicles.
The object'ofthis invention is to provide new and improvcd'means for mounting the light bulb inth'e lamp so that the bulb may be readily removed from the lamp, without opening the front of the lamp or dlSCOIlllGClZ .ing any of the wires supplying the current to the lamp.
My invention, therefore, consists in the features of construction and combination of parts hereinafter described in the specifica tion','pointed out in theclaimsand illustrated in the accompanying'drawings;
Referring. to said drawings, Figure 1 is a central section through a lamp embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a section on line 22, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section on line 3+3, 1 80 F I Kgain referring to the drawings, .5 rcpresents the casing or shell of my improved lamp which, as shown in the drawing, is cincular in shape and is preferably made of metal as to be a conductor for electricity. At the tront of the casing is mounted a ring 7 whicli is secured in the casing by means of screws 8. The said ring 3' forms the mounting for the glass or lens 9 which may be hel therein in any suitable manner. In the back of the lamp casing is formed a circular opening '10 and on the hack of the casing around-said opening 10 is forinedanin;
teriorly-screw-thread ed boss 11. A plug 12 having an exterior screw thread corresponding to the thread on the boss 11 is screwed into thei'said boss. This plug 12 is preferably prdvided with a head 13 in order that it may lie readily manipulated. The plug is provic ed with a chamber 14'. In the said chamber 14 in the plug 12 is arranged a lamp refeiving socket 15 and the inner end thereof s spaced from the back wall of said chamber, -The said socket 15 is provided 5l= ,witl1 a flahge 15' which prevents it from be "in'g shoved too far back in thechaznher l4.
Patented n a,-1eia.
Insaid socket is formed a centrall arranged screw-threadedbore 16 whic ex tends from end to end thereofa'nd. the thread in the said bore 1s of the standardtype-for receiving. the screw-threaded end-of aj'lam'p bulb,shown 'at 17, Between the lamp socket l5 and the walls of the chamber His ar} ranged an insulating sleeve '18 :which conipletely ,insulates the lamp socket-from the said plug. A contactplate 19 is arranged at the back of the chamber 14 in the plug and is adapted to heengaged lbyhoneterminal of the lamp. bulb-when the bulb is v 1 any suitable. iusulatn -material secured screwed into the. lamp SQGket A .:post 2015f lthe back Well. i the lamp cann'g i-bymeans of a bolt 2-1 s and the $51 .5. bolt emnds h o gh. the said pos on the-en t e eq is mo nted te minal strip 22 w'hich; s pla e by means of; a nut-23which sulated from the stripfhy means ofa' 24 of any suitable insulating material; The
end of thesaid terminalim 9;
the outer end of the lamp socket lfiflAhind-f ing post 26 is niountedon the Casing and to this binding the wire whic supplies the current, andthe other end 28 of the wire is terminal strip 22;'
It will be readily post is secured one end. 27 of secured, to, the
. as understood that the cur rent will enter the lamp casing from the wire 27, then passLthr-ough thef plug- 12 to one'terminal of the lamp bulb, than from the lamp bulb to the lamp socket and through the terminal strip 221 0 the wire 28.
Now, it it is desired to change the lamp bulb it is only necessary to unscrew the plug 12 a from the casing and the old bulb can be readily removed and. a new one inserted-in the lamp socket after which the plug is.
screwed back into the lamp casing and allthe connections immediately rcstab- What I claims 1. In an electric lamp fof like, the combination of alamp casing formed of a conducting material, said lamp casing being provided with an opening in the wall thereof, a plug arranged to fit into said; opening, said plug being provided :owitha chamber, a lamp socket arranged "insaid "I101: vehicles andthe chamber in said plug, insulating nater-ia-L arranged between the walls of-saidchainberf and said lamp socket, a terminal strip fim mounted within said lamp casing and insulated therefrom and arranged to contact with said lamp socket,-a lamp mounted in the lamp socket and having one of its terminals in electrical COnt it with said plug and the other terminal in electrical contact with said lamp socket, and means for connecting one terminal of the electric circuit directly to the lamp casing and the other terminal of the circuit directly to said terminal strip. v
2. In an electric lamp for vehicles and the like, the combination of a lamp casing formed of a conducting material, said lamp being providedwith a screw-threaded opening in one wall thereofia plug arranged to screw into said opening, said plug having a Ichamber formed therein, a lamp socket havmg a screw-threaded bore'extending there through arranged within said chamber and insulated from the walls -of said chamber, a terminal strip mounted within the lamp casing and insul; ted therefrom and 'arranged to make contact with the lamp socket, a lamp bulb mounted in the lamp socket and havingto saidterminal strip.
3. In an electric lamp for vehicles and the like, the combination of a lamp' casing formed-of a conducting material, said lamp 35 casing being provided with :a screw-threaded opening in the wall thereof, a screw-threaded plng arranged to fit into said opening, said plug being provided with a chamber, a contact plate arranged at the baclcof said 40 chamber, a lamp socket having a screwthreaded bore extending therethrough arranged within said chamber in said plug and I p spaced from the rear wall thereof, insula ting material arranged between the walls of 45 said chamber and said lamp socket, a terminal strip mounted-within said lamp cas ing and insulated therefrom and'arranged to contact with lamp socket, a lamp bulb-v mounted in the lamp socket and having one Q '7 of its terminals in electrical contact with the plate at the back of said chamber and the other terminal in electrical contact with said 'lamp socket, and means for connecting one terminal of an electric C1I Cl11t dl1eCtly to said lamp casing and the other terminal of the circuit directly to said terminal strip.
In testimony whereof, I sign the foregoing specification, in thepresenceof two witnesses.
