To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SYDNEY I. Pnnsoo'r'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, county of New York, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Iterolling .hilechanism for Cigarette-Shells, fully described and represented in the following specification and the accompanying drawin s, for1ning a part of the same.
This invention relates to certain improvements in mechanism for making cigarette tubes containing mouthpieces, and more particularly to mechanism for ire-rolling the tubes after they have been formed and the mouthpieces inserted therein.
In the machines ordinarily employed in which mouthpieces are made and introduced into cigarette tubes, the tubes, after the insertion of the mouthpieces, are usually sub jected to the action of what is known as a rerolling mechanism by which the tubes having the inserted mouthpieces are subjected to a rolling action which tends to unroll the coiled mouthpieces slightly so as to make them snugly fit the interior of the tubes. In these machines, there were no devices employed for positioning the tubes prior to being acted upon by the rerolling mechanism, so that it frequently happened that a tube would be subjected to the action of the rerolling devices when its axis was not at right angles to its path of travel through the rerolling devices. The result of this was that there was a tendency to unroll the mouthpiece spirally which caused the end of the mouthpiece blank to protrude slightly beyond the end of the tube or easing into which it was inserted, thus presenting an unsightly appearance.
It is the object of this invention to pro vide an improved rerolling mechanism in which any tendency on the part of the mouthpiece to unroll. spirally, thus causing its end to protrude from the tube, is avoided.
lVith this and other objects not specifically referred to inview, the invention consists in certain constructions and in certain parts, improvements and combinations as will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically pointed out.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is an end elevation of a mouthpiece rerolling mechanism, the figure also illustrating in section certain parts of the machine for forming the mouthpiece and inserting it into the tube. Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken through the rerolling mechanism shown in Fig. 1.. Fig. is a detail end eleration oi. the .rerolling mechanism. The cigarette shells which are to be operated on in the re-rolling mechanism may be introduced into said mechanism in any suitable manner, but where, as will usually be the ease, this rerolling mechanism'is used in conncctimi with a machine for forming and inserting the mouthpieces into the cigarette tubes. the rerolling mechanism will receive the shells directly from the mouthpiece inserting mechanism. In the particular construction shown in the drawings, which drawings illustrate one embodiment of the inrention, 1 indicates a part of the 'lranm oi? the machine, this frame being proiided with rods 2, 3 on which is supported a bracket This bracket carries a cleft arm 5 which supports a slotted introducing tube (3, this tube cooperating with a cleft spindle 7 on which the mouthpiece blank is rolled, the blank being guided into the cleft in the spindle by a guide, as 8. The particular construction of introducing tube, spindle and the parts immediately connected therewith is fully shown in an application filed by S. I. Prescott, Serial No. 316,686, of which the present application is a division, and reference is made to said application No. 316,686 for a full disclosure thereof.
When, as has been indicated, the rerolling mechanism hereinafter described is to form a part of, or be used in connection with, an organized machine for forming and inserting moutlu icces, the shells, after having the niouthpieces inserted therein, will be delirercd to the rerolling mechanism in any suitable way. In the particular construction illustrated, the rcrolling mechanism includes an inclined table, as 9, on which the shells are dropped after the mouthpieces have been inserted therein.
The particular (oi'lstruction of the rerolling derives may be varied widely. As shown. they include a rerolling roll 10, this roll being provided with circumferential ribs ll and cooperating with a curved bed,
as 12, of which the table 9 may form a part.

In the best constructions embodying the invention, means will be employed for straightening the shells, so that when they are acted upon by the rerolling means their axes will lie at right angles to the path of the shells through the rcrolling means, or, in other words, when the rerolling means includes a rerolling roll, the straightening devices will operate in such a way as to bring the axis oil? the cigarette shell into parallelism with the axis of the rerolling roll.

mg means may be varied within wide limits, in the construction shown, the roll is provided with a segment-shaped block, as 13, this block having ribs which correspond with the ribs 11 but which extend far enough from the surface of the roll so as to completelv fill the opening between the roll and being curved to correspond with the curve of the bed. The operation of these straightening means will be well understood from Figs. l, 5 and 6. Tig. 4- represents a shell resting against the straightening clock, the shell having been dropped upon the inclined table 9 and having rolled down it. As the roll rotates, the block moves "from the position shown in Fig. -ft to the position shown in Fig. during which time the action of gravity and the block causes the cigarette shell to assume a position parallel to the axis of the rerolling roll. in Fig. 6, the block is shown as having moved far enough to per mit the shell to enter the rerolling channel, that is, the space between the rerolling roll and the bed 19. It may be remarked that the ribs are flattened slightly, as indicated at 14:, thus insuring that the shell enters the rerolling channel.
lVhile the action of gravity might be depended upon to cause the shells to enter the rerolling channel, in the best constructions embodying the invention means will be employed for positively forcing or inserting them thereinto. in the construction illustrated, these means include a curved arm 15, secured by clamps 16 to a rock shaft 17. This introducing arm, when employed, may be operated in any suitable manner. As illustrated, shaft 18 of the rerolling roll is provided with a cam disk 19 and the shaft is provi "ed with an arm 20 which is orced against the circumference of the cam disk by a spring 21. As the roll rotates and at the nropcr time, the arm 20 is forced by its spring 21 into the depression 22 of the cam disk, this operation throwing the introducing arm forward and positively forcing the shell. into the rerolling channel.
in order to operate the rerolling mecha uism, the rerollii'rg roll may be provided with a gear, as 23, which gear will be driven from ny suitable moving part of the machine with which this rerolling mechanism is con- V nected.
The rerolled shells may be discharged into any suitable receptacle, as, for instance, a magazine, indicated at 24:, stripper fingers, as being employed, if desired, to insure the delivery of the shells.
Changes and variations may be made in the construction by which the invention is carried into effect. The invention is not, therefore, to be confined to'the particular construction hereinbefore described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
